Las Vegas, NV – There was no shortage of interest and
speculation regarding what Dana White was going to announce Thursday
after The Ultimate Fighting Championship let the public know that a
major announcement would be made during a media conference call hosted
by the UFC President. Few though predicted what we actually found out
today.
UFC President Dana White has confirmed, with versus.com’s Ariel Helwani,
that the Ultimate Fighting Championship will be merging with its sister
organization, World Extreme Cagefighting. The merger of the two
organizations is to take place in January of 2011with the last WEC card
to be WEC 53: Henderson vs. Pettis; the event is set to take place take
place December 16thin Glendale, Arizona.

Starting
in 2011 the UFC will for the first time feature 135 lbs. and 145 lbs.
weight classes. After purchasing the WEC back in 2006 many pundits in
the sport speculated that it would only be a matter of time before the
organization’s fighters would be completely merged into the UFC although
none really expected that it would happen now.

Great news for the lighter fighter! Bigger paychecks and more variety in the PPV's. If ZUFFA is going to put on a show every two weeks, they need variety.

So the  flyweights are gonna get the boot? that actually sucks…

Is it 100% the bantamweights are in? I didn't see mention of it in one of the releases i read…

Exciting news. This was the plan all along, and it will be exciting to see the lower weight classes in the UFC.

Maybe some of the top Japanese stars will end up here now too?

And by here, I mean the UFC.

Harry… the article I read is that 100% of the WEC fighters as well as the behind the scenes people will be making the switch over to the UFC and Dana said that down the road he would still like to see a 125lb division instituted.

Awesome to see this.  Nice to see the smaller guys are going to get more $$ and get them the recognition they deserve.

I would like to see guys like Warren, Omigawa, Sandro, Hioki, Hoshino, Mann, Yamamoto, Fernandes, and Ishida make the move well more then that I like Ed West and Pitbull also but UFC will now have to start hunting after more big names with there money to spice up the divisons, 145 really needs to come up with solid contenders.

Who do you think will come out with the unified LW title after the Maynard/Edgar & Pettis/Henderson meet?

I say 2011 will be Maynard's year.
