Someone sent in this suggestion to MMA Junkie today… rather than having WEC's lightweights moving to the UFC why not do it the other way around and move the UFC LW division to the WEC. The WEC would get established, household names on their cards which would bring more exposure and interest in the lighter guys. The UFC would continue to make their piles of cash with WW to HW divisions!

IMO this is a great idea… what do you guys think?

But isn't their overall strategy to push everything to UFC and not have a WEC eventually?

It would be a solid idea if they were looking to build the WEC name.

From what I've seen and what I really noticed when WEC came to Edmonton this year – ZUFFA DOES A PISS POOR JOB OF PROMOTING IT. The reason it bugged me so much was because a lot of people didn't even know it was coming and their "media blitz" was the week of and pretty much entailed some radio time from what I understand. I initially thought they may have been using it to test the waters regarding a UFC card here, I sure hope not because attendance certainly didn't reflect the fact that UFC would do very well here (imo). I must say though, was a great card and solid night of fights – too bad they didn't do a better job promoting it and getting more people in the seats.

Oh right, to stay on topic… I'm inclined to agree with MAD, I can see them phasing out WEC before they bolster it.

I really doubt UFC would wanna send some of their more established money makers to the perceived minor league WEC. A BJ Penn fight main eventing a WEC card would do less sales then a BJ Penn fight highlighting a UFC card

That really depends… thing is WEC is perceived as "minor league" when in fact it's not. Just a different weight class set – top end happens to be the low end of the UFC.

I don't perceive WEC as minor leagues… mainstream fans do though… back when WEC had light heavy, middle weight, and welter weight categories the WEC had alot of lower class fighters that couldn't and didnt cut it in the ufc.

I don't understand the WEC 155 division really. They don't use it as a minor league or developmental league. Most everyone that enters the UFC LW division comes from outside the WEC. I don't see the point of the division.

They must've kept the WEC lightweight division so they could build up a champion and do a champion vs champion fight. They prolly figured BJ would of cleared out the division by now and needed a new challenger.

I think they kept the 155 division because it would be very hard to run a promotion with only 2 divisions.  Especially when fans tune in for championship fights.

Ya I guess that makes sense… but couldnt they bring in the 125s and move the 155s out?

That's the plan… they want to establish the 125lbs division and move LW's to the UFC.
