Teammates will go to battle in January when featherweights Mark
Hominick and George Roop meet in a potential No. 1 contender’s bout as a
part of the upcoming “UFC Fight for the Troops” show on Jan 22 rumored
for Fort Hood, Tex.
The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the negotiations on Monday. Heavy.com initially reported the bout.
The subject of teammate vs. teammate has become one of the hottest
debates in all of MMA over the last few months. It looks like Hominick
and Roop have decided that teammates can indeed square off as both 145lb
contenders train under Shawn Tompkins in Las Vegas.
As recently as October following his win over Chan Sung Jung, Roop
(11-6-1) told MMAWeekly Radio that he didn’t envision himself fighting
Hominick, but it looks like the stakes have changed with the winner of
their fight possibly getting a shot at either Jose Aldo or Josh Grispi.
Roop enters the fight after a stunning knockout of the “Korean
Zombie” in his last bout, and has looked very strong since dropping down
to 145lbs and moving to the WEC.
Previously rumored to be the opponent for Jose Aldo in January, Mark
Hominick (19-8) will instead face a training partner and friend in Roop.
A winner of four fights in a row overall, Hominick has turned up the
heat in his last several performance hitting the perfect stride to get
into title contention.
The bout between Roop and Hominick will take place on the Jan 22 “UFC
Fight for the Troops” card that has been all but confirmed for Fort
Hood, Tex. Sources have indicated that security measures and clearances
are the only things standing in the way of a final announcement that
the UFC will head to the military base for the 2011 show.
