World championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotions STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL, in association with premium television network SHOWTIME have signed a new, multi-year agreement to co-promote events headlined by the MMA legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-2, 1 NC).

In addition, STRIKEFORCE has assembled eight of the world’s top ranked heavyweights to compete in the STRIKEFORCE World Grand Prix – Heavyweight Tournament, a three-stage, single-elimination tournament that will take place over several events in 2011. I do not see this going all the way through, I doubt Fedor will fight more then 2 this year.  They are also saying they want Kharitonov in the tournament what I see very very unlikely as he said he wants to try concentrate on K-1.  Then there is the problem with Barnett being re licensed after the steroid crap.  Too go along with that they said no challenger fighters like Cormier or Del Rosario will be in it, what leaves 2 open slots to what they want, unless they go sign guys like Sylvia or something they will have to fill spots with rookies.

i agree with Mike here i highly doubt this will go all the way aswell! Watch this happen, Fedor knocks out Silva but in the process he breaks his thumb in a war with Silva! Forcing him to withdraw from the rest of the tourny! ( same thing happend when he fought Sylvia) Frankly i could care less bout what Fedor deos! in my opionion he is completely irrelevant in todays MMA!

Where is the open slot? You just saying that Barnett and Kharitonov may become open if they win?

Bigfoot/Fedor

Overeem/Werdum

Kharitonov/Arlovski

Rogers/Barnett

I love that the HW title gets defended throughout the tourney as well.  Much better than leaving your champs on sidelines and only defending title once a year like Bellator.

They should've put King Mo in this instead of Arlovski…

Also they have 2 reserve bouts booked incase of injuries or steroids… Lavar Johnson vs Del Rosario and Valentjin Overeem VS Ray Sefo

There are still Barnetts re licensing and hearing he has to do to be aloud to fight and rumors of Kharitonov not being set to fight for the tournament yet cause his dedication to K-1.

Hopefully Coker was intelligent enough to make sure these issues were cleared up prior to making an announcement like this… I'd like to see this tournament go through to the end!

The tournament bracket is a little lopsided though… My picks are Kharitonov, Barnett, Fedor and Overeem! IMO Arlovski and Rogers should have been alternates and Del Rosario and Lavar Johnson should have been slotted in their spots!

I agree Cormier, Johnson, and Del Rosario should all be mixed in there but oh well, maybe they should have a Challengers tournament to face the winner of the big tournament lol

The rules have finally been set…

-Overeem's title will not be defended throughout the tournament, the winner of the HW Grand Prix will fight Overeem for the title at a later date.

-All tournament fights will be 3 x 5:00 rounds except the finals which will be 5 x 5:00 rounds for the Strikeforce HW Grand Prix title.

-Overeem will not be permitted to fight for Dream or K1 until the conclusion of the tournament.

-In case of a draw, a fourth independent judge will determine who moves on in the tournament based on the fighter's overall performance in the fight.

-If a fighter qualifies to advance in the tournament but for any reason can not advance a five-person tournament-review committee who will select a fighter to advance from a pool of fighters that will include the previous opponent and the winners of reserve matches.

I think this is a terrific idea for strikeforce, it will help them sort out their HW situation as well as promote the biggest names the company has to offer

It is going to be highly entertaining watching Alistair fight himself!

I wonder how he will train for that…

They should do a 24/7 for his training camp for that fight.
