Winnipeg's newest MMA promotion, Cage Fighting Manitoba, is bringing the Snowman to town.  Former UFC Heavyweight title contender Jeff "The Snowman" Monson will be taking on Marcus Hicks in the main event of CFM's inaugural show on January 7.  Monson, 39-11 overall,  has fought nine times in 2010 – going 7-2 in the process.

Monson, who has won his last five consecutive fights, will face Marcus Hicks in the match.  Hicks is 10-20 with his most recent fight being a loss to Kalib Starnes.  Hicks is claiming to have renewed focus on his MMA career.  He says,

Are you kidding me?

A) That is a terrible freakshow match. Was this approved by the Manitoba commission?

B) Will Monson even be allowed across the border?

I'd like to know what kind of official approves a hirrble match-up like this as well. Hicks said he was done fighting after an injury dropped him from his last AFC fight, I think it was supposed to be Misha Cirkunov at AFC 3. Before that he missed a 185 bout with Starnes by like 20lbs, then came in overweight when they agreed to a catch weight of like 200 or something…

Monson is a great HW to bring into Canada, but there are many better opponents than Hicks for him up here.

Why wouldn't Monson be allowed to cross the border?

Monson has had a lot of legal problems over the last 2 years involving defacing a government building in the U.S. I just wasnt sure if this would cause a problem for him or not. At the time, it was a big deal.

A) The promotion tells me that it has been approved by the commission.  The fact that they are on the record about the fight tells me that the commission must have approved it as you cannot announce fights in Manitoba with commission approval first.

B) They don't allow anarchists into Canada?  Didn't our population double from Vietnam War draft evaders?

There are very few good HWs in Canada who can give Monson a fight and even fewer who are available and willing.

Considering the powers that be were too chickenshit to even let George Galloway in the first go-round, I can see how they might shake down Monson. If  i get odds, I will bet on him not getting into the country…

I think there are few top end HW's in Canada, but many HW's that although are not top tier they would both put on a better show and be more competitive against Monson.

Where are guys like NIck Penner, Rodrigo Munduruca that are top end guys, or even less experienced up and comers like Justin Shaw or Ryan Fortin…

Geez they didn't HAVE to use someone Canadian either. They could have brought in someone credible for a main event. I have no idea what they are paying Hicks, but that money could have been better spent on a more entertaining match-up.

I will beleive a "renewed focus" when I see it. I think someone on this site once before called him Marcus "The Paycheck" Hicks, I bet if he's taking this dive, he's getting a nice check for it.

Munduruca is exclusive to CFC and Fortin signed with MFC.

Nick Penner has gone to LHW and is out for a year due to injury.

Justin Shaw would be good, but would not want to take a loss this early in his career.  Way to big a step up.

I do not think there is a Canadian HW that is a good matchup or who is available and willing to fight Monson.

I used to work at the border, the problem wouldn't be with whatever he was doing at the time he was arrested.  That is irrelevant.  It is also irrelevant if it has been three years.  The only thing that is relevant is what Monson was charged/convicted with.  He would be eligible for a variety of permit/visa options, but nothing would be guaranteed.  This sort of situation occurs when the CFL opens training camp every year and the American boys try to come up with all kinds of different criminal records.  Most end up getting in after filing a truckload of time intensive paperwork.

Monson would be a big name and big personality to add to the mix anyway.  Its incredible to think that not long ago Monson and Tim Sylvia were the top of the HW mountain in the UFC.

OK Keith, last post knocking this match-up and I'll move on.

Since those names are locked up, do you think Hicks is the best match-up for snowman?

Funny how I havn't heard anything from M.A.D on this show. Taking the high road? Has there been shows other than CFC in Winnipeg in the past?

M.A.D is on holiday outta the country. He's back Sunday. Curious what he'll think.

He don't so much like mismatches, I think, on accounta the fact that they hurt the sport.

It is a bad matchup between an 'A level' fighter and a 'C level' fighter.

I would not bring any top HW into Canada to fight a Canadian HW as the best Canadian HWs are locked up with other promotions and the rest are no where near competitive.
