More North Americans know Gretzky, but do you think more people world wide know St-Pierre?

For sure.

Outside of Canada, nobody cares about hockey.

For the most part, no one cares about non-UFC MMA anywhere in the world.

And only a few places really care about UFC, and that's cuz it's still a novelty in some places.

Hockey is FAR bigger. I don't understand some of these statements.

Bobby… how about if it was current stars?  I think Gretzky is known more.

How about Crosby vs GSP or Iginla vs GSP?

I can't believe you guys are being pulled into this or even trying to make a discussion/arguement.

The statement is a ridiculous over the top pro wrasslin style pr move, and… guess what it worked. Wow

If someone stopped and thought this out for a sec they'd see how ridiculous it is.

Seriously, Canada is the only place who cares about hockey. The states barely even knows what it is.

I think GSP said it best though when he said he hasn't come close to accomplishing in MMA what Gretzky did in Hockey.

It's not about who's the better athlete, we're talking purely popular on a world level.

More Americans watched the Olympic hockey than watch UFC PPVs.  Hockey is easily more popular than UFC in the States and in all northern climates.

However, South America, Africa, Australia, Middle East, Central America, Southeast Asia would know UFC better, in my opinion.

Dunno about that. Us Canadians love us our hockey, but given our relatively low population, we account for a big chunk of UFC PPV.

Can you tell me where in the middle east mma has a fan base, except UAE (where it is a niche sport if I ever seen one), or Africa?

Also in places like South America, isn't it really just Brazil.or Asia mostly Japan and Korea

All these other continents mma isn't a Top5 or so sport. Where there are many countries where hockey is a major sport with long established history and roots.

Remember for the most part (sure there are exceptions) hockey draws between 15-20k a night in north america, where as mma struggles to draw a couple thousand a month or two in places. Even UFC… it comes in as a special attraction to cities with the exception of Las Vegas and it doesnt sell out all the time.

World wide it's even worse.

Bobby, man you had some good points. Made me re-think the possibility of GSP being bigger than Gretzky. If you look at the logical points you made, maybe Sidney Crosby is a bigger name than GSP and even Gretz in this day and age? Look at what he did in the Olympics…

im inclined to agree with BKB on this here. I love mma more than hockey but when i was growing up all i wanted to be was a hockey player! Shit man do any of you guys remember that cartoon called "the all stars" it was Micheal Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Wayne Gretzky! as far as world wide Gretzky takes the cake by far! 4 stanely cup rings, olypic gold (as a coach), grace the covers of multiple sports magazines numerous times before and after he played hockey in the NHL, also been on countless cereal boxes, has his own line of clothing sold at department stores around the world, has his own brand of wine sold at numerous stores around the globe, i could go on forever im sure. Gretzky transends hockey! GSP is off to a great start but NO WAY he comes close to the level Gretzky has!!!  try and deny it.

I'm not sure there's a country where MMA is say a Top 3-5 sport, where there are numerous countries where Hockey is.

Pro wrestling style statement by White hooked some of you in, boo…

Speaking of wrestling, I bet Bret Hart, Edge, and Chris Jericho are athletes that are more recognized the world round.
