Band Council would need to grant the authority to the commission to oversee the events.

I'm not sure if that was done in this case.

It seems to be hit and miss, with most NOT having the proper authority.

As long as the fights are safe, I will continue posting FSC/Prestige or any other unsanctioned MMA event in Canada. I have heard that EMTs and ambulances are at these Fighting Spirit events and the matchups come out ahead of time with well known fighters sprinkled throughout their cards

Clements,Showtime in Muay Thai,Brown, and I think Gasson\Hale (MT) are just some of the bigger names associated with the FSC cards in the past. (I did not fact check those names, this is just a forum and my memory is poor)

I have never been to an FSC or Prestige event, but if someone I respect goes to an unsanctioned show and tells me it was a shit show and was unsafe, I will stop posting just as I have stopped posting XCW and XCC. (By the way, I don't trust competing promoters telling me their competition is unsafe. I get too many of those emails)

They're a bunch of $$ grabbing gypsy promotions, cops wont touch them (a) cause they're on native land, and (b) cops have better things to do than break-up illegal events in ontario.  FSC, at one event didnt have proper EMT's on site, Iroquois has used aliases in lue of fighters names in the past, as well as botched weight classes (fighter a and b being 10-15lbs difference) and lie to fighters regarding their opponents weights.  They're bad news, shouldn't be supported, I support the natives generating income, but not off our sport!!!  I say ours as in the fans, fighters, promoters, reporters, gyms working hard to show how safe and legit MMA is as a sport.   The native run shows remind me of flea market clothing, fake and cheap trying to be passed off as the real deal… pffft!!!!

I have the utmost respect for all the guys you mentioned Keith (Gasson, Clements, Show, etc) but just because these guys are crazy enough to fight on these shows (or do what the gotta do to make a living) is no reason to support this dangerous illegal nonsense.

Just my two (non) cents.

Here's what they do threaten.  MMA as a whole!!

These events are an absolute joke, and YES i'm hating.

I hate anything that puts what I do at risk.

The last show guys were fighting without medicals, matchmaking was happening AT the event.

WTF guys?  this helps NOTHING.

If things go bad on one of these shows, potentially nobody can fight anywhere in Canada.

The last Fighting Spirit show?  You are referring to the last XCC show, which we no longer cover.

I do not get into legalities of native commissions, self-governance, and all that.  What I care about is if it is safe.  Lets not dump all native commissions together.  Walpole Island is not Oneida is not Iroquois 6 Nations is not River Cree.  XCC is not FSC is not Iroquois MMA is definitely not MFC.

If someone I trust says they attended Fighting Spirit at Onieda and it was not safe, I will not support it.  So far, no one has said that.

This issue is safety – not sanctioning, in my mind.  There are rumors that River Cree Council never gave River Cree Commission any authority which would make River Cree Commission illegal.  I DO NOT CARE.  I care that MFC is safe as possible for fighters, that matches are fair, and people get paid.

Edmonton Commission allowed PRIDE rules and almost changed some fights at HeatXC the day of the fights this month and allowed fights with huge weight discrepancies and talent levels.  Cold Lake Commission allowed TJ Coletti to fight on a 30 day suspension last month and then he was going to box last week!  Moncton Commission banned MMA for a month last year for no reason.  I can go on and on (and I have with Marc Andre for hours and hours and hours).

Sanctioning is important, but safety is my concern.

agreed! Some of these small municipal commissions have no clue. It would be far more detrimental to MMA in Canada if something bad were to happen to someone in one of these "sanctioned" shows then if it happened at an illegal show.

This is why not only should sanctioning of mma should be pushed, but pushed at the provincial level at the very least and pushed so all commissions use the unified rules as set by the abc and the practices of commisioners regarding events are uniform across the board.

Having grown up- up the St. Clair river from Walpole Island in Sarnia, I really do find it hard to believe they would be prepared and have to funding necassary to run a legit, safe, fair mma event.

Keith said it. There is so much discrepancy between commissions anyway, they are all just the local authority's cut of the action.

Safety is the most important thing and it is something that all parties are aware of and do their best to comply. I can understand that fight drop off the card last mintue due to medical issues, weights being missed, etc. But it is up to the promoters, managers, fighters, coaches to ensure things are safe and fair.

Nobody wants to look bad is the thing, so if there is a change and a bit weight difference the day before the show, it is up the fighters to make their decision and stick to it. Backing out of a fight because it isn't fair or safe is perfectly fine in my books. If fighters did it more often it would seriously narrow down the low level productions and illegal shows that pop up….

Ya but fighters will do crazy things. They need guidelines to protect them from themselves.

There was a guy in Edmonton who failed his heart test, and the doc said he can't fight, and should never fight or he was in huge danger of heart failure.

HE TRIED TO FIGHT ON ANOTHER SHOW.

Meds have to happen. Many unsanctioned shows have no/barely any meds.

I agree meds have to happen for safety reasons, but, at this time, sanctioning does not guarantee that this happens either depending on the province/city. Maybe some time in the future it will.

This was EXACTLY my point about the fellows i was  accused of  'hating on' before, except I was made out to be an asshole for saying it. The circumstances were not exactly the same, but similar.

Corny catchphrases like 'the guy shows a lotta heart" and "let's see you get in there" is not gonna put food on the table when the guy winds up on disablilty.

Even legal shows need to be more selective about who they let get bashed in the head.

And yes, sorry for the derail.
