The Oxford dictionary defines stress as “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances”. On March 19, Martin “The Stress” Desilets defeated Victor “The Matrix” Valimaki via TKO late in the first round to capture the TFC Light Heavyweight title. Since then, adverse or demanding circumstances have been abundant in the life of Desilets.

With his title reign a mere six months old and marred in controversy with talk of illegal and dirty tactics, Desilets has not even had a chance to enjoy the biggest win in his career. Martin admits “I hit one low blow accidentally…” but denies landing a second illegal flurry. Martin states that “the ref was right there and did not stop it.”

Surprisingly, Desilets also admits he was not in the greatest shape heading into the first fight. Desilets maintains that he “had not been training a lot when I was approached with this first fight.” However, he promises this will not be the case when he returns to Edmonton for the rematch. “I have been working really hard and put a lot of time in the gym preparing for this fight,” states Stress.

The tension of a rematch has not been the only mental strain weighing on Desilets. The fact that he cannot get licensed in his home province has really stressed out the TFC champion. It bothers Desilets that “I can’t even fight in front of my friends and family.” Martin has a criminal record from a few years back that excludes him from getting the OK from the Quebec police to allow the RACJ (Regie des Alcools des Courses et des Jeux) to licence him as a fighter. Not only has this been a mental strain, but it has also been a financial strain. “I have had offers from the United States… and Europe”, but due to his criminal record, Desilets cannot get the appropriate work visas, which have caused him to turn down significant pay days.

Looking back on Oxford’s definition of stress, one can see the parallels that have been Desilets’ life over the past year. Martin is fully prepared to put all this behind him. He has put a lot of training time in with Steve Claveau at Team Legion and Firas Zahabi at Tri-Star Gym to make sure he keeps his TFC Light Heavyweight crown and continues to increase his value on the open market. Desilets even hinted at an offer pending a win at TFC 11. “I’ve had offers and considerations from other promotions”, mentions Desilets. He is even still considering his international options and is “going to try and send another application.”

September 10th is the new beginning for “The Stress” as the Victoriaville native once again ventures into enemy territory to defend his newly minted title. This time he will be coming in a new man with all emotional strains behind him and he can start a new chapter in his MMA career. “The Stress” vs. “The Matrix” should be the most enjoyable of demanding circumstances for all Canadian fight fans.

The Stress of Martin Desilets

The Fight Club has two of them facing each other in their TFC 11 main event.  (#3) Martin Desilets will face (#4) Victor Valimaki in a rematch of their March 19th fight that saw Desilets stop Valimaki late in the first round.

Dwayne Lewis was the former #3 Light-Heavyweight until he lost a decision to Emanuel Newton at MFC 25.  Lewis was to looking to return to the win column against Wilson Gouveia at MFC 26.  Unfortunately, Gouveia pulled out but Lewis will face Mike Nickels this Friday.

Who Will Be the #3 LHW in Canada?

The other big move was Jordan Mein who lost his last fight to Jason High but has gone 4-1 in recent Welterweight action. Top MMA News felt this was worthy enough to take Cory MacDonald’s spot on the list. MacDonald has not fought in a year and moves to the inactive list even though his next fight has been booked. Unfortunately, his UGC fight against Chester Post is well above the Welterweight limit.

1. Georges St-Pierre (20-2) – Previous Rank (1) – Canada’s top fighter surprisingly had problems finishing Dan Hardy in his last title defense. Next, the TUF 12 coach will defend his title in a rematch with Josh Koscheck at UFC 124 in Montreal. Next fight: vs Josh Koscheck at UFC 124 on December 11.

2. Claude Patrick (12-1) – Previous Rank (6) – After beating Matt MacGrath, Patrick accepted a call up to the UFC where he submitted Ricardo Funch with his patented Guillotine.  Patrick is undefeated since 2002 winning eleven straight fights.  Everyone knew he was talented, now we are seeing that talent on the world’s biggest stage. Next fight: James Wilks at UFC 120 on October 16.

3. John Alessio (27-13) – Previous Rank (3) – Alessio has been campaigning to get back into the UFC and Top MMA News agrees that he belongs there or at least should be fighting for the MFC Welterweight title. Alessio choked out War Machine in July War Machine went to jail. Next Fight: vs TBD.

4. TJ Grant (15-4) – Previous Rank (2) - TJ Grant lost a close Majority Decision to Johny Hendricks at UFC 113 that feature a couple low blows by Grant and a late punch by Hendricks. Grant gave an impressive showing against a top wrestler. The loss drops Grant to .500 in the UFC and drops him two spots on this list. Grant will take on Julio Paulino at UFC 119. 5. Rory MacDonald (10-1) – Previous Rank (4) – Canada’s young wunderkind Rory MacDonald received his first loss against Carlos Condit at UFC Vancouver. The fight was stopped late in the third round after Rory took a lot of damage after he impressively won the first two rounds. This is a small setback in what will be a stellar career. Next Fight: vs Matt Brown at UFC 123 on November 20.

6. Jonathan Goulet (23-11) – Previous Rank (5) – Mixed results for longtime UFC fighter Jonathan Goulet since the last rankings. Goulet lost to Marcus Davis at UFC 113 and was subsequently released by the company. Now he is fighting for his local Quebec promotion Ringside where he impressively took out a tough Matt MacGrath in quick fashion at Ringside 8. Now Goulet gets to fight for the Ringside title against Chris Clements. Next fight: vs Chris Clements at Ringside 9 on November 13.

7. Ryan Ford (11-2) – Previous Rank (7) – Ryan Ford blew through former UFC figher Tom Speer since the last rankings. The Real Deal also made another one big change – he moved back to his former home – the MFC.  Ford will fight later this month at MFC 26 against Douglas Lima (14-4) who is 3-3 in his last six fights.. Top MMA News hopes the MFC gives Ford tougher fights in the future. If Ford wins, how about Ford vs Alessio for the MFC Welterweight belt? Next fight: vs Douglas Lima at MFC 26 on September 10.

8. Sean Pierson (9-4) – Previous Rank (8) – Pierson was to fight Dan Hornbuckle at Bellator but an injury forced Pierson to pull out of the tournament.  Now Pierson is scheduled to fight Ricky Goodall (6-2) at W1.  This should be a typical Pierson ground and pound beatdown.   Next fight: vs Ricky Goodall at W1 on October 23.

9. Jordan Mein (17-7) – Previous Rank (NR) – Young Gun Mein lost his last fight against Jason High at RITC 40.  However, Mein look very capable against the DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix finalist and Top MMA News had the rounds even before High rode out the third round on top of Mein.  Previous to that loss, Mein dispatched rival Alberta Welterweights Andrew Buckland, Victor Bachmann, and George Belanger.  Next fight: TBD

UFC 118 Fighter Pay – Toney Tops List

Representing the world renowned Trigym Gym in Montreal, Jonathan Goulet is coming off an impressive 1st round TKO victory over Canadian prospect Matt MacGrath in his first fight for Ringside. Goulet was coming off a loss at the hands of Marcus Davis in May at UFC 113 in Montreal, which was his first fight in over 2 years due to an injury. This loss signalled the end of his UFC contract, as he was let go by the American promotion. The Victoriaville native stayed positive, and has decided to refocus his career by making it his mission to accumulate championship titles. Preferring to seize the opportunity rather than be mired in self-pity, Goulet has bounced back with a vengeance to quickly become Ringside MMA’s top contender for the welterweight title.

Despite his limited experience in professional MMA fights, IFL veteran Chris Clements represents a major threat for Jonathan Goulet, due to his innate talent for striking. Known for his ability to end fights quickly through his explosive TKOs, this professional MMA fighter from Adrenaline MMA in London, Ontario (Team Tompkins), will have the continued benefit of training with the likes of Mark Homonick, Sam Stout and Chris Horodecki. Clements has already fought 6 times in Quebec, and his built a very strong fan base in the province.

This matchup will no doubt cause some divisions amongst the Quebec fight fans who have grown to support this group of Team Tompkins based fighters who have fought in Quebec over the last 7 years. Their support should still be strong in number despite the implication of local favourite Jonathan Goulet.

In the co-main event of the night, rising star Alex Garcia (4-0-0), who has kept his record perfect intact through his first four professional fights, will be facing the toughest challenge of his young career when he takes on veteran Tyler « TNT » Jackson (9-6-1) from the Revolution Fight Time out of Langley, BC. Jackson has already faced the likes of Samuel Guillet, Martin Grandmont and Sam Stout, and he was the first to put a blemish the record of then undefeated Derek Gauthier in January 2010.

Derek Gauthier (6-2-0) is looking to get back into the win column, after most recently sending shockwaves of concern through the crowd as a result of a brutal KO loss during Ringside: No Escape, at the hands of veteran Dustin Poirier. His opponent for Payback has yet to be determined.

Making his fourth professional fight will be Christopher « The Tank » Boisvert (2-1)from Team Bergeron who will face the Albertan Lenny Wheeler (3-1-0). Boisvert, a native of Drummondville, delivered one of his best performances in a grudge match against rival Kevin Morin on June 18th – No Escape, which negated his disqualification loss from their first encounter. On November 13th, one of Quebec’s best prospects will look to represent his province when he takes on one of the best of Western Canada in Wheeler. For his part, Wheeler rattled off three consecutive wins to start his career, but is coming off an arm bar submission loss to Josh Machan. With all of their victories being earned through striking, the fans can expect a stand up war between these two fighters.

Preview – Nick Diaz vs KJ Noons II – October 9

Rogers, who has lost two straight to Alistair Overeem and Fedor, will face journeyman Ruben Villareal (18-18-3) at the event. Villareal should not post much of a threat for Rogers who looks to get back to his previous winning ways.

Drysdale finishes off Huveneers with an Arm Triangle

Top MMA News has learned that Robert Drysdale (1-0) will headline the November 6th Armageddon Fighting Championship 4 event in Victoria, British Columbia.

Drysdale, the 2007 Abu Dhabi Open Weight champion, made his successful Mixed Martial Arts debut at AFC 3 in Victoria. On that July 17th card, Drysdale, who trains and coaches out of Xtreme Coutre in Las Vegas, submitted Bastien Huveneers (8-3-1) by Side Choke in just over a minute.

Now Drysdale’s AFC 4 opponent has been set. Drysdale will face Canada’s 9th ranked Light-Heavyweight Clay Davidson (5-1). Davidson, who trains with David Lea at Toshido MMA, is unbeaten in the last two years going 5-0. In those past five fights, Davidson has never needed the second round as he has finished each opponent in the first. This should be a tough second fight for Drysdale.

The Drysdale vs Davidson main event joins a solid AFC 4 card that is looking better and better after each announcement. Nick Hinchliffe vs Mike Hackert, Brad Causey, and a Graham Spencer vs Shawn Albrecht rematch have already been announced to fight on November 6th.

Robert Drysdale Opponent Set for AFC 4 Main Event

Will Curtis Demarce wipe the smile from Tyson Steele's face at MFC 26?

Though they come from the same camp in the same town, they are two vastly different personalities.

Yet these two fighters have a common goal – a successful and lasting first impression in their MFC debuts.

Tyson Steele and Ford Robertson are both slated to step into the Maximum Fighting Championship ring for the first time at MFC 26: Retribution, and while both have clear intentions on coming out on top in their respective matchups, they certainly have different outward approaches.

The undefeated Steele (6-0), who will lock it up with Curtis Demarce in a lightweight bout, has a quiet demeanor and while excited about the opportunity before him, has a much more laid-back approach. Robertson (3-0), who will round out the undercard in a middleweight battle with Andrew Buckland, has an all-out bluster that is sure to endear him to an MFC crowd that likes its fighters will a healthy dose of bravado.

While their avenue towards pre-fight hype differs, both have a desire to show their worthy of the opportunity on the big stage.

“I’m not aggressive by nature, but I like to start quick, put the pressure on early and not give my opponent a chance to get comfortable. I want a quick start and finish things in the first round,” said a reserved-toned Steele, whose unbeaten streak comes complete with a run of stoppages inside the opening five minutes.

Robertson has a more in-your-face way attitude and a nature that leads one to believe he will be attack-minded to back up his talk.

“Basically I like to hurt the other guy. I want to finish the fight and I’ve done so every fight so far,” declared the 25-year-old, whose record includes a pair of first-round stoppages including one over Heat XC veteran Chad Sherman.

“That’s how I go about things. I want to get in there and if I can finish the fight early, all the better. I just bring it and if I see a finish, I go for it. I’m very aggressive and very offensive. I’m focused on what I want to do and that’s finish the fight.”

Steele will get the biggest test of his career against Demarce who has a decided edge in experience with 17 fights to his credit. Yet the six-foot, 23-year-old has a quiet confidence about him.

“I’m ready to take things to the next level and I know I have to take him very seriously,” said Steele. “I think I just have to stick with the game plan and put him in bad positions where he can’t be dangerous. I have to control him to win, put him in bad spots, keep the pressure on, and finish it.”

Steele has the added incentive of making his debut as the first bout of the HDNet Fights televised main card. It’s quite a jump for a young fighter who has fought in obscurity but Steele feels ready for that additional pressure.

“When I got the call I was very excited. To be the first fight on TV, to get that opportunity, I feel very fortunate because that kind of thing doesn’t come along very often,” he said. “Now I want to put on a good show and prove to everyone that I was there for the right reason.”

Robertson, meanwhile, will also be out to prove he belongs in the MFC ranks. Confidence is not an issue for the five-foot-nine Robertson who is counting on years of action in top-rated amateur wrestling circles to suplex any jitters. A former University of Saskatchewan Huskies wrestler, Robertson was ranked as high as fifth in the nation and took on eventual 2004 Olympic champion Cael Sanderson at a prestigious meet in Winnipeg – an event that also featured Josh Koscheck and Muhammad Lawal.

“It’s a big deal to be coming to the MFC but I’m not worried about the nerves or the pressure,” maintained Robertson. “I’m really excited and I’ve increased my training because of it. I’m putting in the extra effort because it’s going to be such a big night.”

Steele, Robertson Pumped for MFC Debuts

In their first bout, which took place at “TFC 10: High Octane” this past March, Martin Desilets and Victor Valimaki laid it all on the line, throwing punches with abandon. In the end, Desilets was able to outlast his foe en route to a TKO victory with only ten seconds left in the first round. He gained Valimaki’s light heavyweight strap in the process. Now, these two will look to exceed their performances from their first fight at “Full Force.” Valimaki will attempt to regain his lost crown, while Desilets will do everything he can to hold onto it. In a battle for the TFC Canadian Lightweight title, the undefeated Mitch Clarke (6-0), a native of Edmonton, will fight Josh Machan (7-3, seven straight victories), who hails from Red Deer, Alberta. This scrap features two top young Canadian lightweights, and is sure to electrify the crowd.

With the TFC World Welterweight Title declared vacant due to the departure of Ryan Ford from the organization, TFC’s top welterweight contender, Ryan “The Kid” McGillivray, is now in the spotlight. “The Kid” has only been competing in mixed martial arts for the past four years, but has quickly established himself as one of the top Canadian prospects in the welterweight division. All of Ryan’s fights have been in and around his hometown of Edmonton, so he is very well-known in the local MMA community, and he has built a loyal and enthusiastic fan base. And with eight of his ten victories coming via submission, fans know that they can always expect an exciting fight for McGillivray. He’ll be facing a strong Muay Thai fighter in Markhaile “Showtime” Wedderburn. This tough Canadian fighter has fought top 170ers such as Ford, Jason High, and Dan Grandmaison. It will truly be a test for “The Kid.”

GSP Koscheck Title Fight Scheduled for Montreal this December

Among the Canadians were Chris Clements and Jesse Gross who both finished the night with victories. Clements finished Caleb Grummet in the second round while Gross quickly dispatched Eric Moon.

Also on the card was TJ Coletti, who improved his record to 0-5 only eight days after being beaten by Wes Ranger at WRECK MMA. Other Canadians on the card include Jo Petatagoose, Ryan Dickson, Josh Taveirne, Adrian Brown, and Jeff Thomas were among the other Canadians on the card.

The Raging Wolf promotion announced that Davis will now defend her title against Tonya Evinger on November 6th.

It was not a great night for Dayboll Jiu-Jitsu and Fitness Academy.  Sam Pascuzzi, a fighter who trains out of the same Niagara gym that Davis trains out of, also lost on the card.  Pascuzzi, who took the fight on short notice, lost to Six Nations fighter Taylor “King” Solomon by Arm Bar in the first round.

Alexis Davis Loses, but Retains Title

Submission of the Night – Joe Lauzon overwhelmed Gabe Ruediger with punches.  Lauzon took the fight to the ground and stopped Ruediger with an Arm Bar to win $60,000.

Fight of the Night - A tough fight between Nate Diaz and Marcus Davis brought each fighter a $60,000 bonus.  Diaz won the fight by putting Davis to sleep in the third with a Guillotine.

UFC 118 Results

In their first fight, Victor Valimaki and Martin Desilets had a one round war that saw low blows exchanged between the two fighters and a controversial stoppage by referee Yves Lavigne. The result was Martin Desilets taking home Victor Valimaki’s Light-Heavyweight title. Now they are back for a rematch.

TFC 11 Preview – The Valimaki Desilets Rematch

Top MMA News has looked further into the legality of the show.  In Alberta, the province does not sanction Mixed Martial Arts.  Instead, each municipality must decide whether to regulate MMA. The FMMMAA is not a commission that was formed by the regional municipality responsible for Fort McMurray.  Here is the response from the Office of Mayor Melissa Blake:

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has not created the Fort McMurray Mixed Martial Arts Association as a governing body, however, in the absence of such a municipal body or bylaw, the event scheduled for September 19, 2010 remains subject to provincial, not municipal jurisdiction.  As a result, our Municipality has no authority to either sanction or oppose the intended event.

What is Happening?

1. Top MMA News has been told off the record is that several Alberta commissions may be informing gyms that fighters could be suspended if they fight on this non-sanctioned show.   Fighters should be aware of this potential risk.  Fighters have previously been suspended by commission for fighting on unsanctioned shows in Ontario.
2. Several fighters have already pulled out of the Prestige event.

Top MMA News is trying to get a response from Sandy Bowman to find out the status of the show.  Prestige could continue in an unsanctioned state.  Other Alberta promotions have used commissions from other municipalities to oversee their events, but there are questions of the legality of commissions leaving their jurisdictions.  Tickets are still on sale for the event.  Stay tuned to Top MMA News for further updates on this story.

R1. Wilson looks to tap gloves but throws a dirty punch instead. BOO! The two trade at a fast pace to start. Amateurs generally have a problem pacing themselves. The two are standing with Hammo landing more than Wilson. Wilson is looking a bit tired with three minutes left. Hammo lands a nice leg kick and presses forward. Big right hand by Hammo wobbles Wilson. Wilson responds as his legs stabilize. Pace slows but the two still throw. Hammo using an effective right leg kick this round. R1. Chowace has huge size advantage and comes out swinging. Coleman absorbs a bit of punishment including some good kicks. Coleman takes his opponent down to the canvas but Chowace walks up the cage, get underhooks, and throws a pair of nice knees. Takedown by Coleman and he works to side control and throws some knees Chowace’s body. Chowace gets up and slams Coleman down to the cage impressively. Caged Rage 4 – Castlegar – October 2

Growing up with Lee Mein as a father, it is no wonder that Jordan Mein is one of the toughest twenty-year olds in Canada.  Not only is Lee Mein a Heavyweight MMA fighter, Jordan’s dad has also been teaching him martial arts before he was even enrolled in Kindergarten.  ”It was awesome growing up with a father who fights and been in the cage.  I have learned everything from him,” says the younger Mein.

Jordan Mein (17-6) is truly a fighter from the new generation that cross trains many martial arts disciplines from a very young age.  ”Jordan started coming to the gym for for Kempo Karate when he was three year’s old,” states Lee from his Canadian Martial Arts Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.  ”He has been at the gym his whole life.”  As he grew older, Jordan added Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling to his ever improving striking game.

Jordan attempted other sports like football, basketball, and lacrosse, but it was fighting that he excelled in.  ”Young Guns” Mein entered every competition available as he grew up.  Jordan slowly advanced through Kempo Karate and Jiu-Jitsu tournaments to grappling and Kickboxing events to having his first amateur MMA fight at 14 years old.

Ironically, it was another MMA wunderkind from Western Canada that Jordan debuted as a pro fighter when he was 16 years old.  Future UFCer Rory MacDonald was the first fight and also the first loss of young Jordan’s career.  The two grew up in MMA in similar fashions but many feel that MacDonald’s team was a little more selective on who Rory would fight, while Jordan would fight anyone at anytime and anywhere.

“Jordan has always wanted to fight the toughest guys,” says his father.  Incredibly, the 16 year old Jordan fought six times in his first six months of professional fighting.  He went 3-3 while taking on stiff competitors like MacDonald, Kevin Manderson and Tim Jenson.   Since those first six months of fighting, Mein has shown drastic improvement going 14-2 in the cage.  ”I have fought all around around Canada,” states Jordan, “and I have kept getting stronger and when I have had a few losses I have learned from them.”

His last loss was against Montreal’s Mike Ricci who ended up going to Bellator.  ”Ricci took me down and held me there.  By the third round he was tired and I was feeling good.  He got the win because he had good position but I was not hurt.”    Since that fight, Mein has focused on getting up off his back and he has incorporated more wrestling into his game.  Since that loss, Mein has been unstoppable – tearing through good opposition like Andrew Buckland, Victor Bachmann, and George Belanger.

The loss to Ricci was an important lesson for Jordan as he now prepares to fight Jason High (9-3) on Thursday, August 26 at Rumble in the Cage in Taber, Alberta. High is a strong wrestler who also made the Grand Prix finals in DREAM in 2009 before losing his last two fights and being released by the UFC.

“Jason High will come hard at me, but I will do the same to him.  With his wrestling background, he will try to take me down and sometimes he might get it.  I will put a lot of pressure on him and take him down as well,” explains Jordan.  ”He may be good at wrestling, but I am good at everything combined.  I have high confidence in my stand up and if I have to work off my back.”

A win against the recently released High is just what Mein needs to get noticed by the UFC. “I have fought for a long time and beaten everyone around here.  This fight is exactly what I want at this point in my career.”

No matter how great of a champion you are, somewhere down the road, you will underperform. Regardless of who you think won the April bout in Abu Dhabi, it’s what happened to B.J Penn that night. He was slow, sluggish and looked flat out strange. The very opportunist Frankie Edgar made the most of it and outworked the legendary Lightweight over five rounds. Will it happen again?

No.

The Prodigy will arrive with a baggage of experience that will allow him to seize up Edgar more quicky and put him in deep waters in the early rounds. The New Jersey native has the odds stacked against him again due to his smaller frame and his lack of power. Penn is one of the most instinctive strikers in MMA, displaying a timing close to unnatural in fights against Sean Sherk, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. He has an understanding of the stand-up game that Frankie Edgar has yet to display. He’s going to split one of Edgar’s dynamic combos with a thoughtful right hand early to send the wrestler on his back. From there, we all know how it’s going to turn out. No Lightweight yet has given a satisfying answer to the B.J Penn riddle.
Outcome: Penn by Rear Naked Choke in the third.

Randy Couture (18-10) -714 Vs James Toney (0-0) +400
I love James Toney. In a boxing ring, he has displayed predatory instincts that MMA fighters like Anderson Silva can only give a pale reflect and despite his age, his style kept him away from punishment overloads. James Toney is a young 42 years old. I was happy to see him cross-over to mixed martial arts. His counter-fighting style and his brash attitude are a welcome addition to any promotions. Even when he doesn’t want to, he can make things entertaining.

Although his sharp tongue might have befailed him this time. His boxing skills will get him so far, but the greatest champion of the sport’s history is a different kind of opponent than your random overweight 205′er doing his UFC debut. Randy Couture has been in there with pretty tough dudes and proved that his game worked on a championship level. What I think is going to happen is that the fate of James Toney will be decided within the scope of thirty seconds. Both guys will circle out for a long period of time (Toney won’t go forward…and he doesn’t care about being booed) and as soon as they will engage, we are going to be fixed on what is going to happen.

The interesting thing is that Couture will HAVE to eat punches to get inside. How he will react to them will dictate the outcome of the fight. I can’t see Toney causing enough damage to put a rugged veteran like Couture away immediately, but I can see him throw a tides turning counter right hand as The Natural will close in. Will it happen? It’s unlikely. But can it happen? Yes, logic says Couture, but I know better than to count a T-Rex like Toney out.
Outcome: Couture by Rear Naked Choke at the end of the first.

Demian Maia (12-2) Vs Mario Miranda (10-1)
This has the potential to be good. Not Sylvester-Stallone-Expendables kind of good, but rather Sharon-Stone-Michael-Douglas-Basic-Instinct kind of good. When the fight hits the ground, there’s no question who is the most skilled Jiu-Jitsu fighter. Maia should lock one of Miranda’s long limbs (if not his neck) and put him out of contention. But the twist in the plot is that Maia has struggled before in MMA against fighters of a bigger frame and Mario Miranda is as big and skilled as it gets in the Middleweight division.

Mario Miranda is a big, lanky and mobile Middleweight who can move pretty well. Not many UFC viewers know him because he did not have much exposure in the main cards, but he is for real. I can see him catching Maia with his terrifying, long kicks and unsettle the jiu-jitsu world champion. Will he throw Maia off his game and derail his methodic approach? Turning this fight into a brutal striking match could get Miranda a win and send him skyrocketing up the Middleweight stratosphere. Will Miranda stay to his Brazilian jiu-jitsu upbringing or will he turn this fight to his advantage?
Outcome: Upset of the night. Miranda by TKO in the third, after escaping the jaws of defeat.

Kenny Florian (13-4) -175 Vs Gray Maynard (9-0) +125
This can turn into a pretty solid fight. Maynard has proved to be dominant early in his career, but it seems that as time and fights pass by, opponents start to adapt to his dynamic boxing/wrestling game. His last two opponents Roger Huerta and Nate Diaz used their speed and reach respectively to give Maynard a hard time. MMA is a cruel mistress, if you do not move along with her, she is most likely to leave you behind. There is no such thing as settling down in MMA, you have to evolve on a fight to fight basis.

That, Kenny Florian understood pretty well after his loss to B.J Penn. Conscious about the shortcomings of his approach, he switched camps and during his last two fights, we have seen a completely revamped Kenny Florian. He displayed boxing skills that were both ferocious and intellectual, working behind his jab to mount dazzling attacks against Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi. Florian’s story has been one of a constant evolution. He was thrown in championship matches very early in his career, but if he keeps up, against Maynard, third time might be a charm for KenFlo.
Outcome: Florian by unanimous decision. Fight Of The Night.

Nate Diaz (12-5) -227 Vs Marcus Davis (17-6) +162
The Diaz brothers are unique characters. They are lanky, foul mouthed, fearless and they can kick your ass. I do not know one person (myself included) that did not doubt them at least once because of their scrawny look. More than just a smart boxer and a slick jiu-jitsu brown belt, Nate Diaz possesses a calm and an analytical spirit that few can claim in the octagon. Fighting seems natural to him, like he scrapped in the parking lot on his way to the venue, fights in the Octagon and will fight at least two times at the after party. I have never seen someone quite like him in the UFC.

Davis on the other hand also has an interesting story. After a prompt elimination from The Ultimate Fighter and a loss to Melvin Guillard, he re-engineered himself to enter the top 10 at 170. His new found grappling, combined with his high level boxing lead him to many successes. He’s in deep waters against Diaz though. Even if he has the upper hand in boxing, he’s way over his head on the ground. The younger Diaz brother is simply on another level. Davis is good and strong, but his more conventional grappling is not going to bother Diaz, who’s reached the ”conceptual game” game, not unlikes fellow Welterweight Dustin Hazelett.
Outcome: Diaz by Brabo Choke in the second. Submission Of The Night contender.

Joe Lauzon Vs Gabe Ruediger: Ruediger by Guillotine in the first. Other Submission Of The Night contender.

Nik Lentz Vs Andre Winner: Lentz by Unanimous Decision. He is used to stiffling more athletic foes. Winner’s game is not complete enough to overcome the American.

John Salter Vs Dan Miller: Miller by Arm Bar in the second. Salter will offer an energetic performence, but Miller will weather the storm.

Nick Osipczak Vs Greg Soto: Osipczak by TKO in the third. Expect Soto to win the first round. He is a decent up and comer, but Osipczak’s energizer bunny style is a bit of a rough stretch for his UFC debut.

Mike Pierce Vs Amilcar Alves: Pierce by Split Decision. I don’t know anything about Alves and I’m not sure Pierce does either. I’m expecting him to fall back on what he does best, wrestling people down.

Top MMA News Breaks Down UFC 118

Dr. Gordon Mackie originally brought forward this motion to the BC Medical Association due to the chance of brain injury to MMA fighters due to repetitive blows to the head.

As MMA becomes legalized in more and more provinces, doctors hope they become a strong voice against the dangerous sport. Doctors did not vote on banning other sports at the conference.

Canadian Doctors Vote to Ban MMA

Sean Zubor is a member of the Carlson Gracie Team Canada in Maple Ridge B.C. and holds a 3-1 record in MMA. Zubor is 1-1 in Battlefield with a submission loss to Dwyer and a split Decision Victory over Austin. Zubor is a strong grappler with some power in his hands, BUT, he is not as an effective a striker as brooks.

When this fight is on the feet, pay attention to which fighter is getting the better of the exchanges. Based on his impressive outing against a very experienced Dwyer, many expect Brooks to easily handle Zubor on the feet, but you never know. Zubor will likely look to close the distance and put Brooks on his back,

Video – Toney and Couture on their UFC 118 Bout

Rice and Bowman founded the fight promotion “primarily for the love of the sport and to showcase the talent and hardwork that goes into being a professional MMA fighter,” according to Bowman who also runs Bowman’s Martial Arts in the city.  Bowman and Rice are just the two to pull it off.  Sandy has been involved in Martial Arts for 32 years and runs two gyms in Fort McMurray.  His partner Chad is the planner.  Bowman states that Rice “has a passion for taking on big jobs (like the design of their state of the art martial arts facility), planning them, and being proud of the end result.”

The two reside in Fort Mac, which is famous for its oil sands.  The city has a growing population which currently numbers around 65,000 and is  expected to top 100,000 in a couple years. Its MMA scene is currently led by MFC fighter Dwayne Lewis and his coach, the afore-mentioned Sandy Bowman.  Lewis’ Fort McMurray fans are an army that travel 5.5 hours to Edmonton to cheer on their local fighter.

Now Fort McMurray MMA fans will be able to cheer their favorite fighters on at local Prestige MMA events. Sandy Bowman sees a huge market for live MMA in Fort Mac.  He says,

The appetite for all sport is huge in fort McMurray from our minor hockey and ringette to our fort McMurray Oil Barons (junior hockey team).  In the last few years, I have brought mixed martial arts to the plate in Fort McMurray. The community response has been incredible!  Even when we have our guys competing out of the city, no matter where we go, Fort McMurray is there to support our fighters.

As for the fighters scheduled to appear, there will be a blend of local favorites and outside veterans in a card that will be topped by Canada’s #5 ranked Lightweight Brad Cardinal (9-5) taking on former The Ultimate Fighter cast member Ritchie Whitson (6-1).  Cardinal has not lost since 2008 and has beaten Kurt Southern and another former TUF fighter Allen Berube.  Whitson appeared on TUF: USA vs UK where he beat Paul Bird to get into the TUF house but then lost to eventual winner Ross Pearson in his subsequent fight.

Asked which fight is the one he is most looking forward to on the debut Prestige card, Bowman cannot make up his mind.  He states, “With the help of a lot of my friends that are managers and promoters that I have supported over the years, I’ve put together a card where I’m excited for every fight and I couldn’t pick a winner in any of them!!”

Fort McMurray has Prestige

This is the formal announcement of the final card for the event slated on Friday, Sept. 10 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta.

Before the live crowd and the millions watching throughout North America on HDNet Fights, MFC 26: Retribution will be one of the most action-filled events in the history of the Maximum Fighting Championship. The event begins at 6:15 p.m. MT with the televised main card starting at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for HDNet channel designation).

MFC 26: Retribution will feature two high-impact bouts that will share co-main event status. In the night’s finale, home-grown MFC standout Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (12-2), a two-time challenger for MFC welterweight championship, returns on his quest for championship gold as he takes on American Top Team star Douglas “The Phenom” Lima (14-4).

Ford, an Edmonton, Alberta product, has built up a massive fan following thanks to his aggressive style and he will be out to extend his current four-fight winning streak. Lima, a native of Brazil now fighting out of Atlanta, Georgia, is a submission specialist who is eyeing a shot at the MFC crown.

In the night’s other co-main event, legendary veteran Antonio “Mandingo” McKee (23-3-2) not only puts his MFC lightweight title on the line but also his very career when he takes on Brazilian talent Luciano Azevedo (16-8), the only man to hold a win over pound-for-pound top-10 fighter Jose Aldo.

McKee, who fights out of Lakewood, California, has not been defeated in seven years, but stated clearly that he will retire from competition should he not finish Azevedo inside the five-round distance. Azevedo, a native of Rio de Janeiro, has taken to the challenge and vowed to end McKee’s career and secure the title around his own waist.

The remainder of the televised card is stacked with the MFC’s finest including a pair of middleweight bouts that promise to be explosively entertaining.

First up, brash British striker Tom “Kong” Watson (12-3) takes on hard-charging American wrestler Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (15-6) in a true matchup of clashing styles. Watson, who hails from Southampton, England, made a dynamic organizational debut scoring a first-round, head-kick knockout of Travis Galbraith at MFC 24, and he wants to follow that up with a win that will assure him a title shot. Taylor, who fights out of Murietta, California, is looking to get back to winning ways following his submission loss to Thales Leites at MFC 25, and the former reality show standout is determined to leave his mark on Watson.

In the other middleweight clash, two rugged customers will meet head-to-head as “King” Solomon Hutcherson (11-6) takes on David Heath (15-6). Hutcherson, who fights out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has made a name for himself with MFC fans for his never-say-die attitude, and the former reality show contender is eager to prove his worth. Heath, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma who will be making his first venture into the 185-pound ranks, is always ready for battle and was a co-recipient of the MFC Fight of the Year for 2009.

A light heavyweight matchup is also featured on the main card as ultra-popular Fort McMurray, Alberta, native Dwayne Lewis (11-5) matches up against Mike Nickels (8-3) of Denver, Colorado. The heavy-handed Lewis is on the cusp of big things in the MFC’s 205-pound division but needs to return to the formula that earned him a seven-fight winning streak prior to a unanimous decision loss to former light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton at MFC 25. Nickels, a jiu-jitsu expert who has no problems standing toe-to-toe with his foes, was a co-recipient of the MFC Fight of the Year for 2009 and is eager to strut his stuff again.

Opening the HDNet Fights televised card is a showdown of lightweights pitting Curtis “The Demon” Demarce (10-7) against undefeated rising star Tyson “The Man Of” Steele (6-0). Both fighters are making their organizational debuts and hoping to leave a strong first impression on the big stage.

The MFC 26: Retribution undercard features a number of up-and-coming fighters in the following bouts:

Lineup for MFC 26 Now Official

Alexis Davis originally won the title by defeating Molly Helsel via unanimous decision October last year. Since then, she has defended the title once, with a third round rear naked choke victory over the veteran Tonya Evinger in May.

Davis is 8-3 with her biggest wins coming against the aforementioned Helsel and Evinger. Her three losses have come against world ranked competitors in the form of Sarah Kaufman, Tara Larosa and Shayna Baszler.

Meanwhile “Beef” Maxwell is 3-3 with her major win coming via TKO this past July over Lizebeth Carreiro. Maxwell’s three defeats have all come by way of Strikeforce veterans; Gina Carano, Meisha Tate and Michelle Maher.

Raging Wolf 9 takes place August 28th in Niagara Falls, New York at the Seneca Niagara Casino.

Alexis Davis Returns at Raging Wolf 9

Brigham started fighting in 1999 and had a 9-5 record spanning a five year fight career that had Curtis fighting all over the globe. However, in 2004, Brigham seemingly hung up the gloves as an undersized fighter in an unpopular sport. That all changed in the past six years. Everyone is aware of the UFC skyrocketing to popularity thanks to success of The Ultimate Fighter. The WEC also came around and made celebrities out of smaller fighters like Urijah Faber.

Now fans will be able to see WAMMA’s ‘Boss’ fight on October 8th. Brigham, who has fought in Japan and all over the USA and Canada, has faced tough opposition over his career. The submission specialist has beaten future Bellator fighter Brian Green in 2003. Brigham also took a much larger, future UFC Lightweight champion Sean Sherk into the third round of a fight.

Munduruca Out
At the same time as the exciting Brigham announcement, the CFC must also acknowledge that Rodrigo Munduruca has pulled out of his CFC 6 fight due to injury. Although Rodrigo will be missed, Brigham is a fantastic replacement of one submission specialist with another. Brigham has won all nine of his victories by submission. Brigham is not one to leave decisions in the judges’ hands.

Brigham’s opponent can not be announced at this time, but stay tuned to Top MMA News for further CFC 6 developments.

Battlefield Fight League 2 – Quick Results

It’s been quite a while since I last checked in with Top MMA News with an update on my training and fighting in Asia.  This isn’t because there has not been anything going on.  On the contrary, every time I sat down to write a blog post something happened that drastically changed what I had to write about.  The last two months have been a rollercoaster, in terms of fighting and in personal terms.  Preparing for a fight always has its physical and emotional ups and downs, but this month has been particularly unpredictable

The last time I checked in, I let everyone know that I would be fighting DJ Taiki at DEEP 49.  It was definitely a big fight against a world ranked opponent.  I was lucky enough to watch Taiki fight Mitsuhiro Ishida at DREAM 15 before our fight.  He lost a unanimous decision after getting thoroughly out-wrestled and out-grappled, which definitely was comforting to me.  Shortly after watching Dream 15, I found out that my opponent would be changed because Taiki was injured.  No big deal, it happens all the time.  My new opponent would be Katsunori Tsuda; not nearly as big a name as Taiki, but still an undefeated (3-0-1) fighter and a tough match up for me style wise.  In preparing for Taiki, the strategy was clear; weather the storm of strikes to put him on his back and pound away.  With Tsuda it’s a very different story as he seems to have much stronger wrestling and jiu jitsu than Taiki, but he is not in the same league as far as stand up skills.  The focus of my training shifted a great deal, but was going well.

Then I got fired.

A typical teaching contract in Korea includes a one month bonus and airfare home for the teacher when they complete their contract. Every once in a while you hear of teachers being fired in the 11^th month of their contract so that sketchy school directors can save the cost of airfare and bonus money.  Guess what happened to me?  Altogether our boss was trying to stiff me and my girlfriend out of a combined 12 thousand dollars.  Not exactly chump change.

In the meantime, my girlfriend and I had already booked and paid for a 9 day vacation to the Philippines.  Not the best time to have just dropped a big load of money but at least it was already paid for and provided some stress relief from our situation.  As every fighter knows, no vacation is complete without checking out the local gyms and training opportunities.  Before leaving for the Philippines, I was lucky enough to get in touch with some guys who train at one of the best jiu jitsu/mma clubs in the country. The club was run by Alvin Aguilar, the first Filipino BJJ black belt.  I was able to get two days of boxing /kickboxing in when we first arrived in Manila and another two days of Jiu Jitsu before we left.

Alvin Aguilar also runs URCC, the Philippines biggest MMA organization.  As it turns out the URCC was having their biggest show of the year on the day of my arrival in Manila.  The fights were very well produced and the event was extremely well run.  As for the fighters, there were some good jiu jitsu players, some decent wrestlers and lots of good kickboxers but there were not a lot of fighters who looked like they had done lots of cross training. All in all it was a very entertaining night of fights.

In between our days in Manilla, we made our way to the Island of Boracay.  I can not do the place enough justice, it was simply incredible.  A few days of laying on the beach, snorkelling and generally lazing around in a tropical paradise was just what the doctor ordered.

With my vacation over, I returned to Korea to finish preparing for my MMA fight and continue my legal battle against my boss.  I will not get into details but I will say that we were ruthless in our approach to the legal battle.  We wanted to make a clear statement that all foreigners are not pushovers and school directors can not simply break the law and expect them to roll over and go home without a fight. We exerted pressure on our boss through legal the legal system, through the labour and pension board, and through a lawyer.  We also exerted some less than legal pressure through numerous social avenues that made life difficult for our boss.  With the help of my Korean friends from Daegu MMA, we brought a lot more heat on my boss than I think she was ready for.  It took over a month and a half but our boss finally tapped.  She had enough and decided to settle out of our court instead of fighting a battle that she did not expect to be in. It was a huge relief after one of the most stressful things I have ever been through.

Being able to physically address a problem is much more my style than filling out papers for the labour board.  The day to day grind at Daegu MMA was just what the doctor ordered as far as stress relief from the other part of my life.  It was also a good time to be training as there were a few young fighters with amateur fights coming up as well as Un Sik Song who would fight a pro kickboxing fight two weeks before me and an MMA bout shortly after my fight.  Some hard training and a focused diet helped me drop some pounds and lean out to a weight that I have not seen in a long time.  I always said that given a big opportunity I would drop from 145 to 135.  Getting my natural weight down to 148 lbs made the remaining cut look easy.  After a hard workout, I was usually weighing 142 lbs.  My fight was scheduled to be at 63 kg (138 lbs), which would be no problem. And then that changed too.

Last Tuesday, I was informed that my fight was now going to be at 70 kg. There was no explanation as to why and there was no discussion of a possible catch weight.  I was simply told that my fight was being moved up two full weight classes.  While I am not happy about it, I can not say that I am shocked.  I have heard all of the rumours about how foreign fighters get treated in Japan and how the promotions are disorganized and leave details to the last minute. I was half expecting something like this to happen, but still… 16 pounds difference is a LOT.

This week and the few days after the fight are going to be chaotic.  I fly to Japan on the 26^th of August, fight on the 27^th and fly back to Korea on the 29^th where I will teach for two days before flying back to Canada on Sept. 1^st.  Arriving in Toronto on the evening of the 1^st, I have to quickly drive the 8 hours back to Sault Ste. Marie to start my Highschool teaching job on the 2^nd.  Yikes!

My Korean experience has been a great one.  It’s been full of lots of ups and downs in both my fighting life and my personal life.  I’m really looking forward to going out on a high note on Aug. 27^th in DEEP.

The 27-year-old Diaz (22-7), a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and native of Stockton, Calif., has won seven consecutive fights since his last loss in 2007. The undefeated Kaufman (12-0), a former ballet dancer who hails from British Columbia, Canada, is fresh off the first defense of her title, an explosive body slam KO of Roxanne Modafferi at STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Everett, Wash., on July 23. The 24-year-old Kaufman, who has won nine of her fights by KO, will face Coenen (17-4), a submission specialist and the No. 1 contender to the STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight belt.

The 29-year-old Coenen (17-4) will fight for the first time since a third-round TKO loss to Cris Cyborg for the STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Championship at STRIKEFORCE: Miami. Coenen, a member of Holland’s Team Golden Glory and mixed martial artist since the age of 14, will be moving down in weight to challenge at 135 pounds. Kaufman and Coenen have both defeated Modafferi, with Coenen avenging a 2007 loss via first round armbar in her STRIKEFORCE debut on Nov. 7, 2009.

Rockhold (7-1), who could prove to be one of STRIKEFORCE’s next great middleweight superstars, has won six of his seven fights via submission. The 25-year-old member of Team AKA is coming off a first-round TKO (knees to body) of Paul Bradley on Feb. 26 at a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in San Jose. The impressive win was the first KO victory of the Santa Cruz, Calif., native’s professional career. Prior to his latest conquest, Rockhold had won five straight fights by way of submission.

Lindland (22-7), who won the silver medal in Olympic Greco Roman Wrestling at the 2000 Olympic Games, scored a third-round TKO victory over “King” Kevin Casey on May 21 at STRIKEFORCE Challengers in his hometown of Portland, Ore. A former UFC star who has been competing professionally in MMA since 1997, Lindland, 40, is also a former All-American wrestler for University of Nebraska and the 1993 NCAA Big Eight conference champion. During his stellar career, Lindland has triumphed over a number of all-time greats including former UFC champions Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.

Vivian gives up his back and Harrison attempts a RNC but Vivian rolls out. Vivian is able to take top position and unleashes the GNP in return. Harrison is working from his back but Vivian keeps escaping his submissions. Back on their feet Harrison starts using the Thai plum to decimate his opponent with knees. Vivian finally gets Harrison down and tries to use some elbows, Harrison gets his hips up and catches Vivian with a triangle and coaxes the tap.

Ranger comes in for the finish with a few shots from the top and the ref waves off the fight.

What a great night of fights. Wreck MMA also helped fight a more formidable foe this evening in the form of hunger, as Wreck partnered with the Ottawa Food Bank to raise more then a metric ton of food for people in need. The main event between Showtime and The Hammer was not a battle for the ages but The Hammer did demonstrate a much improved ground game. UFC Vancouver fans will remember Rory’s battle with Carlos Condit that won both fighters $85,000 for their Fight of the Night performance at UFC 115. It was the first of Rory’s career.

Rory MacDonald Fight Set for UFC 123

According to Top MMA News sources, Jonathan Goulet will be challenging for the Ringside Welterweight title in the main event of Ringside 9.  The opponent will be Chris Clements, according to UltimeFanatic.com.  The card is scheduled to take place  on November 13 at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau in Montreal, Quebec.

Goulet, a veteran of nine UFC fights, recently defeated a tough Matt MacGrath in quick fashion in Quebec City. The Road Warrior landed a kick and finished MacGrath off with punches to end the fight in less than two minutes.

Goulet joins an already stacked Ringside 9 card that now features three UFC veterans – Shannon Gugerty, Junior Assuncao, and Goulet.  It also features the #3 ranked Canadian Lightweight Guillaume De Lorenzi, the powerhouse Alex Garcia, and a much improved Samuel Guillet who is knocking on the door of the Canadian top 10.

Goulet to Fight for Ringside Title

Dwayne Lewis announced today that Wilson Gouveia has pulled out of his MFC 26 fight due to back issues.  MFC veteran Mike Nickels will take his place.  Fans will remember Nickels sole visit to the MFC when David Heath and Nickels stood toe-to-toe for three rounds at MFC 22.   Lewis was looking forward to knocking off a highly regarded UFC veteran like Gouveia.  However, a win over Nickels, who fought twice in the UFC, would look good on his record as well.

Lewis had this to say about the replacement,

I am pretty disappointed that Gouveia has pulled out but very pleased with the replacement the MFC has given me ! I feel I will still get my stand up war as Nickels likes to bang it out as well !

Both Nickels and Lewis are coming into the fight with losses in their last fights.  Nickels recently lost BJJ phenom Vinny Magalhaes in quick fashion by Arm Bar, while Lewis lost to Emanuel Newton in a three round decision at MFC 25.

Lewis’ loss was his first after winning seven consecutive fights.  The Fort McMurray fighter is eager to get back to his winning ways and will be looking to knockout Nickels just as he did to Marvin Eastman.  Lewis predicts,

I’ll win by KO late in the first.  I will hit Nickels harder than he’s ever been hit before !

Interestingly enough, the #3, 4, and 5 Canadian Light-Heavyweights will all be fighting in Edmonton on September 10.  If the #5 Lewis can get past Nickels as he predicts, odds are that he will move up the LHW ladder  as someone  from the #3 Martin Desilet vs #4 Victor Valimaki TFC fight will lose.

I got a really good week of training this week and today is my birthday, I woke up and got a call from Jonny from Virgin radio, he told me the good news that MMA is coming in Ontario! Wow, what a great Birthday gift and what a great start to my day!

I have been very busy training and also helping out my teammates for their fight on WRECK MMA August 20th at the Casino in Hull.

As everyone knows now there is an addition to Kru Jeff, Stephane Bernadel and Remi Morvan fighting…there will also be Matt “Hammer” Hache taking part in the WRECK MMA card, making his pro MMA debut! Hammer has been one of my BJJ instructor for over 7 years now! He is a brown belt in Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu under Pat Cooligan. Hammer has always been in my corner during all my MMA fights. So he will be used to the crowd and he will know what goes on! He has been training very hard and I can’t wait to see him fight and make his debut. I have always wanted to see him fight MMA as I am sure everyone else at OAMA. Like Hammer says, it will be his first and last, so make sure you come and see it live!!!

Stephane Bernadel and I were training with the Champ, Jean-Yves Theriault. Steph is Jean-Yves’ protégé and has been training with him for around 8 years. Today the Iceman trained Steph and I with the focus mitts, getting our hands sharp! It was an awesome workout and really good to work with the Iceman, 23X world kickboxing Champion!

I also rolled jiu jitsu with Remi the other night. He felt really strong and was very fit. He is more than ready for his comeback to MMA and to get the W! In addition, Pat scheduled a no gi jiu jitsu training session for Remi and myself. I rolled with Paul Hudson, Joel Hadden, Dansky and Warren! All of them solid Renzo Gracie blue belts who really put it on me!

I have been training everyday with Kru Jeff during MMA Elite class 1-3pm. We did some MMA rounds today and he was whooping me! He is in really good shape and you guys can bet that it wont last 3 rounds!

Last Tuesday, I went up to Montreal to train wrestling. It was an awesome training session, in which I got to train with high level wrestlers! There was the usual crowd there, Georges St-Pierre, Kenny Florian and the wrestling team. It was also the first time I saw Miguel Torres who was there training and looking really good!

My opponent for UFC 120 is Paul Sass. He is a newcomer to the UFC. He has a purple belt in BJJ and is an undefeated MMA fighter. He has many submissions victories, mostly by triangle choke. I will not have the reach advantage as he is about 6′1. I will be working my wrestling and BJJ very hard for this fight, and like everyone is saying to me…I will be working triangle choke defence! I hope to redeem myself from the last fight. It was not very exciting…I want to show the UFC that I belong there. I will fight with all my heart and spirit and my goal is to put on the fight of the night!

All in all my training is coming along really well and my 4 teammates are feeling good and ready for their fight!

MFC is heading back to River Cree

Maximum Fighting Championships has announced that MFC 26, scheduled to take place at the Keystone Center in Brandon, Manitoba, will relocate back to The Venue at River Cree in Edmonton, Alberta! After a brief absence from the River Cree Hotel and Casino, the MFC will make their return on September 10! MFC will compete for the MMA spotlight in Edmonton with The Fight Club as they will be holding their event, TFC 11: Full Force on the same night at the Shaw Conference Center!

Fans will have a tough choice between the two as TFC will feature two title fights – a rematch between Victor Valimaki and Martin Desilets for the TFC World Light Heavyweight Title as well as a pair of streaking local fighters in Mitch Clarke and Josh Machan battling for the vacant Canadian Lightweight title.

On the other hand, the MFC will counter with Ryan Ford’s return to the promotion where it all began as he takes on American Top Team “Phenom” Douglas Lima as well as a Lightweight title fight between challenger Luciano Azevedo and champion Antonio “Mandingo” McKee who has not been defeated in almost 7 years!

Rd2: Leroux bull rushes Hennessey and slams him down to the mat head first. The ref calls a halt to the action to take a point away from Leroux for spiking his opponent. Rd1: Nallo starts off popping the jab, then landing a nice side kick. Nallo tries a superman punch but misses. Nallo lands a beautiful slam takedown and transitions straight to mount. Nallo works the GNP, Beavis gives up an arm and Nallo goes for it but Beavis fights it off. Nallo right back into mount and rains down punches until the ref has seen enough and calls the fight.

A great night of amateur MMA action as once again the Hybrid matchmakers came up with interesting and intriguing matches that entertained he fans. What started off as a tweet by Dana White this morning has quickly ballooned into a deluge of happy Ontario, and Canadian, MMA fans rejoicing that MMA is FINALLY coming to Ontario.

The Province of Ontario website reports:

Ontario is taking steps to allow professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events in the province.
The province would adopt the same rules for professional MMA that are widely used across North America. This announcement paves the way for the first regulated professional MMA event to be held in Ontario in 2011.

As MMA has grown in popularity throughout the world, many cities have reaped the economic rewards of hosting events. A major MMA event in Ontario could attract up to 30,000 fans and generate up to $6 million in local economic activity – everything from hotel rooms to restaurants and other stores and services.

While MMA events provide an economic benefit, Ontario’s priority is the safety of the competitors. By regulating professional MMA Ontario could enhance the safety of all participants by ensuring explicit safety and medical standards are met at licensed events.

Randy Turner is off to Afghanistan

Master Corporal Randy “Relentless” Turner cannot do battle in the mixed martial arts ring next Friday due to a posting to war.

A deployment to Afghanistan starting in late September – Turner’s fourth tour in 12 years of Canadian military service – has forced the
31-year-old bantamweight to withdraw from the August 20th WreckMMA Bad Intentions card at the Hilton Lac Leamy because he will be immersed in pre-deployment training.

“The time frame of the fight is not co-operating with my career,” said Turner, who won his first professional MMA match on April 16th of this year during WreckMMA’s second event, Unite for Brian’s Fight, by stopping Mikael Pellerin of Victoriaville, Que. with a first-round rear naked choke to even his record at 1-1.

The chiseled Turner, who is from Halifax and sports a chest-wide Lest We Forget tattoo, said immediately after the win he wished the fight would have lasted longer.

Facing war outside the ring is far less predictable.

“I knew what was expected of me when I became a soldier,” said Turner.

“I am patriotic, but in a place like Afghanistan the flag isn’t going to bring me home, the government isn’t going to bring me home. To be honest it’s going to be the guy to my left and the guy to my right. So that’s really what matters most to me.”

“The trust we have in each other is unparalleled to anything I could explain.”

Turner’s military placement is scheduled to end in April, 2011.

He said he will train in MMA enthusiastically throughout the posting, planning towards a third professional bout next summer.

“I was all over the country and all over North America playing hockey as a kid,” smiled Turner, 31, beads of sweat fresh off of a training session at the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts.

“Had this sport been around when I was 10 years old I may not have played hockey.”

The 10-bout Bad Intentions card is moving to the Gatineau casino for the first time. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

Fight fans and all local mixed martial arts academies are encouraged to bring non-perishable food in support of the Ottawa Food Bank.

W1 – Halifax – October 23

William Romero submits Mike Roberts to become IQMMA Champion

After fighting in the Bellator Featherweight tournament, William Romero will be fighting for W1 on October 23. The promotion recently announced Romero signed a multi-fight exclusive contract. Romero joins a deep Featherweight division that includes W1 champion John Fraser, Antonio Carvalho, Thierry Quenneville, and Ivan Menjivar.

Romero had this to say about his signing,

“I’m very excited about my recent signing with W-1. W-1 is a great organization that has a deeply talented featherweight roster and national television coverage with The Score fighting series. I wanna fight the best and to do so in front of my country is a great honour.”

Now Top MMA News has learned that Romero will fight Tristan Johnson in Halifax, Nova Scotia which is Johnson’s home province.  Johnson and Romero have been scheduled to fight numerous times over the past year.  Initially the two were contracted to fight for Iroquois MMA Championship but that card got cancelled.  According to William, Johnson really wanted the fight and Romero “was asked if I would fight him in his backyard, Halifax instead on Oct.23rd and I have no problem with that!”  Romero continued,

“This fight was supposed to happen over a year ago and now the time has come where we will finally meet in his backyard.  (Tristan)’s  a tough scrappy guy, therefore I’m expecting a battle filled with action that should be exciting for the die hard MMA fans that wanna see a KO.”

Romero and Johnson are both coming off losses which were the first blemishes on previously undefeated records.  Romero, the #5 ranked Canadian Featherweight, lost to Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Friere in the Bellator tourney. Johnson recently lost to Guillaume Lamarche, a fighter whom Romero KO’d in 18 second (watch video here).  With both fighters hungry for a win, W1 fans will be the ones who benefit. Romero has developed great standup with his training with Alin Halmagean’s Iron Tiger team known for its strong Muay Thai program.  Johnson comes from a great team as well. The former boxer trains with Scott MacLean’s FitPlus team, known as the home of the UFC’s TJ Grant.  This one could be a slugfest.

But the Brazilian-born, Atlanta-trained fighter is aiming to change all that with one eye-popping first impression in his organizational debut at MFC 26: Retribution. It certainly won’t be an easy task as Lima, who represents the American Top Team, takes on one of the most popular fighters reared on Canadian soil in Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford, a two-time challenger for the MFC’s welterweight championship.

But “The Phenom” believes that MFC 26 is the perfect occasion for a massive coming-out party.

“I like that the winner of this fight is line for a title shot. Ford has his chance. It’s my time now,” said Lima, who has only let two of his victories get to the judges’ scorecards. Eight of his wins have come via submission with four more coming by way of knockout.

“The MFC is a great organization and I would be honored to get the opportunity for a title fight.”

Lima, who trains and coaches alongside Roan Carnerio at ATT’s Atlanta headquarters, isn’t coming into the Ford fight as a household name or, for that matter, even as a narrow underdog. The native of Goainia, Brazil, is just fine with the fact that the Ford camp didn’t view him as a name enough rival and he doesn’t care that there are many insiders who are predicting that Ford’s recent path of destruction will continue on Sept. 10 in Brandon, Manitoba.

Instead, Lima is inviting the live audience in the Keystone Centre and those watching on HDNet Fights to give him the opportunity to make a name for himself.

“We’ll see what Ford and his people have to say after the fight,” said Lima. “This is a big opportunity for me and I’m going to make the most of it. I’m ready to show the world what I can do.

“I’m not (Pete) Spratt, (LaVerne) Clark or (Tommy) Speer. I am a different fighter than those guys. It doesn’t matter to me who he beat before. I like that people think Ford will have no problem with me. The pressure is all on him.”

Lima certainly does present different – and likely more difficult – challenges than anyone Ford has faced before. He’s more multi-dimensional than those in Ford’s past, and while opponents have never come right out and said it, it didn’t go unnoticed that at least a couple have been intimidated by the Edmonton, Alberta, product’s tough demeanour.

But Ford’s rough presence and rugged in-ring aggression hasn’t fazed Lima, a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a dangerous Muay Thai practitioner.

“I train with people tougher, stronger, and bigger than him,” said Lima. “Nothing he will do will intimidate me. I’m a fighter. I won’t back down to anybody. Man, if I get intimidated by looks or how tough somebody is I might as well not fight.”

And Lima is not concerned about what type of fight the encounter with Ford turns out to be. Styles make fights and Lima will take Ford head-on any way he wants.

“September 10 is on!” declared Lima.

“Game plans always change. I train everything. The ground is my favorite but I love to keep the fight standing too. Wherever it takes place, I’ll be comfortable. I have been training for a long time, my camp has been great, and I’ll be ready for a stand-up war and to do some good scrambling on the ground.”

Who is Douglas Lima?

Kaufman will be on hand to watch as STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight contenders Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala compete in the tournament. She likes the idea and is looking forward to the night of fights.

“I think it’s a real interesting concept,” said the undefeated Kaufman, who will also sign autographs for fans along with STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion Cris Cyborg at the official weigh-in, which will begin at 5 p.m. local time at Dodge Theatre, tomorrow/Thursday. “It has to be tough to have to train for potentially three different opponents. But at the same time when you train you should be training everything anyway. Hopefully you’re at a level where you can tweak what game plan you are going to go with.”

A draw to determine the semifinal matchups for the two-round tournament will take place at the weigh-in on Thursday. The tournament winner will become the official No. 2 contender in the STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight division.

The winners of each semifinal bout on Friday will face off in the tournament final later that night, just before the main event matchup between Joe “Diesel” Riggs (32-12) and Louis Taylor (6-1) that will be fought at a catch weight of 182 pounds.

Kaufman said she expects to see all four women use their ground fighting skills and that there isn’t a dominant striker amongst the four. She sized up each of the four women who will fight on Friday:

MIESHA TATE: “She’s definitely known as a wrestler. I think all the girls will use their wrestling but I think Miesha especially will use the entire cage and angle for the takedown and try to get a finish and control from the ground.”

CARINA DAMM: “She is known for her unorthodox striking. She is coming up in weight so it will be interesting to see how she does against the heavier girls. She does a lot of showboating and uses some Capoeira. I think she uses that to mentally throw her opponents off. So we’ll see if she uses that. I’m not really sure where her strong suit is but I would say it’s on the ground.”

HITOMI AKANO: “She has amazing judo and I know she works with Josh Barnett. All the Japanese girls are tough competitors and just don’t quit. So I expect Hitomi to be tough to beat.”

MAIJU KUJALA: “She’s probably the best striker of the group. I haven’t seen a lot of her and she remains the mystery girl of the four. She has described herself as a slow fighter so I’m interested to see what she’ll bring to the cage on Friday.”
