Mark Holst vs Paul Sass set for UFC 120

Mark Holst is set to return to the Octagon to meet newcomer Paul Sass at UFC 120 on October 16th at the 02 Arena in London. Holst lost a decision to John Gunderson at the Ultimate Fighter Season Finale for TUF 11 this past June in his Octagon debut, while maintaining an 8-2 record with his only other loss to Martin Grandmont.

Sass will be making his Octagon debut at home while sporting a 10-0 record with 7 of his wins coming by way of Triangle choke.

Holst’s camp was unavailable for comment when Top MMA News called for verification.

This past weekend Sarah Kaufman KO’d Roxanne Modaferri with a beatuiful Rampage like slam after breaking down the challenger over the better part of 3 rounds. Modaferri went for an armbar from guard and was picked up and slammed on the back of her head for the KO.

TFC Restructuring and Returning in September

Top MMA News just spoke with Mark Sinclair, President of TFC, to get clarification on a few things. The July 17th show will not go ahead as scheduled, but the company will return stronger than ever in September.

They are not for sale, and due to problems with some shareholders they are forced to restructure, and have rectified the problem, and will continue with TFC promoting MMA. It’s just an unfortunate situation with terrible timing with three weeks to go before the next card.

TFC will be issuing a press release shortly.

It has been long rumored that TFC was having some difficulities and that the company may be up for sale.

Top MMA News has received word from many TFC fighters and other credible sources that the organization is finished. We are trying to get all the facts, but sounds like the company is up for sale for 250k which includes some of the contracts of their fighters.

*(TFC Fighters haven’t been known to have Exclusive deals which has recently been apparent with Tim Hague and Victor Valimaki fighting on the next Aggression MMA card in Edmonton)

Top MMA News has heard from a few sources that the UFC is looking to setup a Joe Doerksen vs CB Dollaway match for UFC 119 in Indianapolis for Sept. 25th. Neither fighter was available for comment.

Dollaway is on a 2 fight win streak since being submitted to Tom Lawlor at UFC 100 with wins over Jay Silva, and Goran Relijic where he won both fights via Unanimous Decision. Doerksen has been on a tear winning 7 straight fights, and has 3 wins in 2 months against Chad Herrick at KOTC, Tom Lawlor at UFC 113, and Shawn Marchand at CFC 5.

The Score has released the schedule for the Canadian Fighting Championship 5 airdates, and CFC has some of the premium timeslots on the highly visible television network.

CFC 5 has been produced into two, one hour segments with the following bouts on each show.

Chase Degenhart out 9 weeks with broken hand

Top MMA News broke earlier today that Chase Degenhardt would be taking on Jason Day on the EFC 5 card taking place July 24th in Lloydminister Alberta.

Unfortunately Chase has a broken left hand above the meta carpals and will be out of action for 9 weeks. This is devastating news for Chase and his team as they have worked really hard to get this opportunity.

Top MMA News will keep you posted on any potential replacements for Jason Day and also we have news of some other big names being added to this card as the matchups are finalized.

Evolution Fighting Championships has announced their next installement EFC 5 titled Summer Rumble set to take place July 24th at the Lloydminster Civic Center. Jason Day has been signed to take on the up coming Chase Degenhardt pitting two of Lethbridge and Canada’s top Middleweights.

13 other bouts will be on the stacked card, and special guests BJ Penn and Wanderlei Silva will be in attendance.

Don Wilson and Mike Fischl are live at Ringside 7 bringing Top MMA News readers live results. In the main event, Guillaume De Lorenzi dominated Dale Hartt. They went to the second round when De Lorenzi landed another takedown and was grounding and pounding away when the referee stopped the fight as Hartt was screaming with a dislocated shoulder. Although it will be listed as an injury stoppage, De Lorenzi controlled this one from start to finish.

Ed Ratcliff has unfortunately been forced to withdraw from his showdown this Sunday at WEC against the “Polish Hammer” Chris Horodecki. Top MMA News was unable to determine the reason behind Ratcliff’s withdrawal. Last night, word spread that the organization was looking for a 155er that was medically cleared and ready to step in against Canada’s 4th Ranked Canadian Lightweight. Ratcliff posted the following on his Facebook wall,

“I wanna say sorry to all the fans, family, and friends for having to pull out on such late notice. Even more importantly I wanna appologise to Chris Horodecki for going thru all of that hard work and not getting the final release u deserve. I wish u the best. Sorry everyone.!!!!!!”

One possiblity that Top MMA News would like to see is the 3rd ranked Guillaume De Lorenzi who is medically cleared and ready to step in without any notice. This would create a match between the third and fourth ranked Lightweights in Canada, however, De Lorenzi is scheduled to fight Dale Hartt at Ringside this weekend.

This would be the most significant matchup on the card that is hurting for Canadian talent.

Top MMA News has learned from sources close to the fight that Joe McCall has been signed to fight Tim Hague on the July 9th edition of Aggression MMA’s 4th installment. McCall sports a professional record of 8-2 and and comes from the H.I.T. Squad camp out of Ohio where he trains with Ruthless Robbie Lawlor and Matt Hughes daily.

Look for McCall and Hague to try and gain rank with a victory and work their way into the big show. Or in Tim’s case back to the UFC.

The UFC held a press conference today that Dana White called the “We Love Canada” press conference.

As expected it was announced that the UFC will be opening an office in Toronto, geared at growing mixed martial arts in Ontario and Canada. The man they are looking to lead this charge is Tom Wright, who was the ex CFL Commissioner, as well as 11 years working for Adidas. Tom has the right combination of skills the UFC was looking for. A combination of business and sports experience is exactly what they were looking for.

One of the first priorities will be the sanctioning of MMA in Ontario, and growing the sport in Canada.

It was interesting to hear that Canada accounts for 17% of the UFC’s business.

This can only mean good things for the growth of mixed martial arts in Canada.

Tonight, Top MMA News is live from Edmonton for the stacked MFC 25 card and were very pleased that the fights lived up to the high expectations everyone had. In the biggest fight of the night, Ryan Jimmo scored a huge win over Wilson Gouveia to secure his thirteenth win in a row with a dominant decision victory. It was a fight that started with a tentative first round followed by an extremely dominant second round where the fight could have been stopped. In the third round, Jimmo continued to take the fight to Gouveia to secure an impressive victory.

In other fights, Thales Leites was quickly taken down by Jesse Taylor, but the Nova Uniao fighter controlled Taylor from his back, bloodied Taylor, and then submitted JT Money. Emanuel Newton put Dwayne Lewis on his back and scored the decision win and Gavin Neil dominated Richie Hightower.

LGIO Scraps 155 Tourney and Gatineau Shows

Top MMA News has heard from several sources today stating that the Let’s Get it On promotion has scrapped their 155 pound tournament and has cancelled all Gatineau shows after what appeared to be a successful debut last month. It is rumored that issues with the Quebec Athletic Commission may be at the root of the problem. Several camps have told Top MMA News that problems with matchups and the size of the LGIO cage could be the culprit.

It is rumored that LGIO decided to eliminate the Lightweight division and only hold the Welterweight tournament with all fights located at the River Cree Casino.

Tickets are still available for the Gatineau show on Ticketmaster despite these new rumors. (ED NOTE: Tickets are no long available on Ticketmaster 5/6/10)

Top MMA News has contacted President Elaine McCarthy and matchmaker Matt Stansell but there is no comment at this time.

This story will be updated as further news becomes available and the situation becomes clearer.

Top MMA News has learned that Ringside MMA will return with their 7th installment, titled No Escape on June 18th at the Centre Pierre Charbonneau. Guillaume de Lorenzi is scheduled to face UFC vet Dale Hartt as he continues his quest to join the UFC ranks and move up the Canadian lightweight ranks where he currently sits 3rd. Hartt is most famous for being the guy who was fighting Corey Hill when Hill’s shin snapped when he threw a kick at Hartt. The two will meet for the Ringside Lightweight Championship Title.

Tim Wadsworth is back to take on Dave Scholten after dismantling Manitoba’s Dwight Sutherland at Ringside 6: Rage. Also on the card is Tri Star up and comer Alex Garcia as he looks to continue his rise in the 170 pound division.

With the UFC set to hold UFC 112 this Saturday in Abu Dhabi, Dana White has announced the UFC is looking to hold an event in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan event will be in the next few months free of charge for the members of the Military serving in the country according to the Gulf News.

“We are trying to setup a fight in Afghanistan in about two months” White told the media this morning, as well as “The UFC has always supported our men and women in the military, not just American we’ve also supported troops in Canada and other countries.”

The UFC has always had a great relationship with the military and has had events in the US with an all military audience with Fight Night 7 back in December of 2006 at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego California. One can only imagine what an event like this would do for the troops morale, and there is also talk of future UFC on an aircraft carrier.

Well it looks like the Edmonton commission maintains it’s stranglehold on being Canada’s rogue commission. The Commission is allowing Sam Osman who just competed February 26th at Canadian Fighting Championship where he took an illegal kick to the head and was unable to continue and was suspended for 60 days. This is documented in the ABC approved database, and if the Edmonton commission had looked, they would have noticed this.
Again, shame on you Edmonton Commission.

Good luck Canadian TUF 12 Hopefuls

Top MMA News has been in contact with Robin Black from the Fight Network, and would like to wish all the Canadians the best of luck in their tryouts today. There are 5 confirmed Canadians so far at the trials, and a great chance more are lurking.

So far confirmed Lightweight Canadians trying out are Lenny Wheeler (3-0) from Edmonton, Guillaume DeLorenzi (7-1) from Quebec, Warren Phillips (4-2) from Saskatoon, Jorge Britto (11-6-1) from Toronto. For Lightheavyweights Craig “Farmer” Brown (6-2) from Ottawa is representing Canada.

Rumors are that Kurt Southern is also there, but Black has been unable to confirm his participation yet.

Alex Ricci, Canadian Muay Thai ace went down to the trials but due to not having any Pro MMA fights under his belt, he was turned away. (Requirement was to have at least 3 pro MMA fights).

There are about 400 competitors there to try out, and there is a blend of TUF wannabees and real fighters, but Black described the event as being very similar to an American Idol tryout, only everybody is wearing tapout gear, and can’t sing.

Top MMA News would like to wish all Canadians trying out for TUF the best of luck, and we will be speaking to a few about their experience at the tryouts.

**Update Warren Phillips and Guillaume DeLorenzi have both advanced to Round 2 of the trials.

Desilets signs 3 fight Exclusive Ringside Deal

Top MMA News has been informed that Martin “Stress” Desilets has signed a 3 fight deal giving Ringside MMA his exclusive Canadian rights. Desilets was ranked 7th in Canada before he took out the 4th ranked Valimaki for the TFC Lightheavyweight title. No word on where he will end up after the rankings are revised or what TFC will do with their champ signing exclusively with Ringside.

After talking with Desilets management, they were never offered a deal by TFC following the title fight victory over Valimaki, they then decided to sign with Ringside.

Steve Bosse Not Signed with W1 yet

Top MMA News has heard from a few sources that Steve Bosse has not been signed by W1 yet. On Saturday night during the W1 Bad Blood event in Montreal, Steve Bosse was brought into the cage as a special guest. Little to his knowledge W1 made the announcement that Bosse had signed an exclusive deal with W1.

Top MMA News has jsut spoke with his manager, Gary Chartrand, and he has confirmed that there is NO deal in place at this time. He did say they were in negotiations and working with W1 but they are not happy with the opponents who have been offered so far. So far, W1 has looked to put together a Craig “Farmer” Brown rematch, or a Jesse Bongfledt match for Bosse. Niether make sense to Chartrand and they could have a deal in place by the end of the day.

Top MMA News has been informed that the scheduled Jeff Monson vs Scott Barrett Main event has been cancelled for tomorrow night’s XKL event at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti Michigan. No reason was given why the bout was pulled by the commission.

OAMA fighter and Top MMA News contributor Mark ‘Boots’ Holst will take on UFC vet Corey Hill for the XKL world lightweight title in the new Main event tomorrow evening as both fighters made weight.

Top MMA News has been informed by Brent Beauparlant’s manager Joey Benoit of Fight Sports Management that the Beauparlant has sustained an injury at work last night and has been forced to pull out of his upcoming W-1 match this weekend against Shawn Marchand.

With little to no time available to find a suitable replacement W-1 has been forced to cancel the fight.

Day vs Hinchliffe Set for Aggression MMA 3 Main Event

Aggression MMA’s Public Relations ace Robin Black has confirmed with Top MMA News that both fighters have agreed to face each other May 21st in Vernon, British Columbia, when the Aggression MMA Brand expands into a new market. Black had this to say when asked about the announcement, ”Everybody at Aggression MMA is ecstatic to announce the main event of Jason Day vs. Nick Hincliffe. Both guys are crowd pleasers and warriors and it should be a great fight!”

Jason Day last saw action at Aggression 2 in Edmonton in February where he was quickly submitted by Jesse Taylor. Day is now 1-1 since being released by the UFC after his UFC 96 loss to Kendall Grove. Day will be hungry and looking to redeem himself and prove he is still a top Canadian Middleweight contender by taking out the always dangerous Nick Hincliffe.

Nick Hincliffe is a King of the Cage fighter who will be competing outside his home organization for only the third time in his career. Hinchliffe last beat rising up and comer Dan MacIver in the semi-main event at AFC 2 a couple weeks ago.

Both fighters are wanting to erase the recent losses and get back in the winning column. This is a great matchup that should be sure not to dissapoint.

Joey Benoit, the new matchmaker for Ringside MMA has contacted Top MMA News to inform us that Ringside 6 will be taking place in Quebec City on April 10th and there will be two title fights on the card.

Benoit wasted no time in his new position and has secured a Ringside Lightweight title fight between Guillaume De Lorenzi and Ryan Machan. Both are two of Canada’s top Lightweights and this fight has serious Canadian ranking implications pushing the winner of this bout to the top of the Canadian 155 ranks after the likes of Mark Bocek and Sam Stout.

Also on tap for this card is a Ringside Featherweight title fight between Guillaume Lamarche and Mitch Gagnon. Both are serious Canadian 145 contenders, with a push into the upper rankings for the winner.

Top MMA News was informed by Ringside matchmaker Alex Caporicci that the Ringsde event scheduled to take place tomorrow night at the Centre Claude Robillard in Montreal suffered another hit today. The highly anticipated matchup between Team Bergeron’s Chris Boisvert and Team Legion’s Kevin Morin has been called off.

Boisvert had been sick for the past week and was braving through it hoping to be well enough to compete, but unfortunately wasn’t good enough this morning to pull it off.

When asked about what this means to the card Caporicci had this to say. “It is unfortunate to lose this bout, but in this sport these things happen. When they are both healthy, this match will happen”
