Fight League Atlantic 1 Play by Play

With the winds gusting up towards 70kms an hour last night it was a good chance to stay indoors and stay warm.  While a hockey rink is maybe not the place to do that, a near sellout crowd packed the Rath Eastlink Community Centre for Fight League Atlantic’s first card last night.  The card featured 11 bouts that did not disappointment as the card went off with a bang. When I talked with the promotion after the night was over, it was nothing but glowing positivity.

“I think the event went pretty well myself, first event and it was a near sellout, and it’s been needed in the Maritimes,” says Derek Clarke, Co-Owner of the promotion.

“We did it, six months of work, look at us now.  In my opinion, huge success. I think visually it looked beautiful, with a great crowd and everything was great.”

While of course the promoters are going to say that they loved the event, from my opinion the crowd was great and cheerful for the fighters and for the most part a great atmosphere the night’s action of fights were great.  When I even I got the chance to talk with the broadcast team from Fite TV about the show, a lot of the same thoughts were echoed about the show

“It was a ton of fun man,” says Jason Smith, veteran MMA broadcaster, who did play by play on Fite TV for the event

“It’s crazy, I have never called an Amateur event, so it was awesome to me because all these guys cut their teeth, the enthusiasm, I thought the level was super high and it was a lot fun too. I thought the main event was great, Jesse Arnett was fantastic.  I liked his adjustments because I thought MacDougall was beating him in the 1st round so he was able to adjust late. Whenever you see that kind of intelligence in the cage, that’s important, great night.”

If you weren’t in the crowd or got a chance to check out the broadcast here is how the nights action went down.  Here are the awards for the night

After the match, Potter did announce to the crows that this was going to be his last fight.  After the fight I wanted to go into more detail about the decision

“I am 99% sure that this is going to be my last MMA fight, boxing whatever,” says Potter

“I put a lot of effort into this fight, I am not getting any younger (37).  I put a lot of training, a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this camp. I was coming off an injury from a car accident in the spring which I didn’t really tell anyone about.  So, there were three or four months where I couldn’t train, and I was really motivated, and this opportunity came up. Solid card, main event was a great fight. Things ran smooth too. I enjoyed it.
MacPhee fight was a severe mismatch so I have a hard time calling that KO of the night. Give it to Little, he had a great showing.

Question: are heel Hooks legal in amateur MMA in NS? It really looked like MacDonald had a heel hook and I’m sure twisting leglocks were illegal.

  2. Cat Clarke says:

    Thanks for the kind words!
Heel Hooks are illegal, he had the entry and ashi garami but didn’t hook the heel and opponent tapped due to injury
