Fight Night 9 – Live Results and Play-by-Play

Fight Night 9 goes down tonight from the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta. Unfortunately Joe Riggs was forced out of his Middleweight Title defense against Matt Dwyer with an ankle injury and Michael Hill was forced out of his Welterweight Title co-main event against Chris Curtis with a nasty staph infection. Fortunately Chris Curtis has agreed to move up a weight class to challenge Matt Dwyer for the now vacated Middleweight Title in the new main event.

Fans in Canada can catch the entire card live on Fite TV HERE beginning at 9pm et and a portion of the card will air live on The Fight Network at 10pm et. Top MMA News will be cageside bringing you all your live results and play-by-play.

  • Fight of the Night: Lucas Neufeld vs. Gagan Gill

Pro/185lbs- Matt Dwyer (11-4) vs. Chris Curtis (19-5)
***Middleweight Title Fight (Vacant)
Round 1: They feel each other out and Dwyer with a teep to the midsection. Both men being cautious to start and Dwyer with a kick to the body. Curtis lands a nice 1-2 and a side kick to the body follows. Dwyer looks to land but falls short and he lands a leg kick. Dwyer lands a right but not chaining his attacks together. They clash and tie up before Dwyer gets the double leg against the cage. Curtis immediately works his way back up and Dwyer presses him against the cage and lands little shots. Curtis with a knee to the body but can’t get his back off the cage. Curtis is finally able to reverse piositions and referee Mark Aparicio separates them. Round 2: Dwyer with a teep to the body and Curtis answers with a leg kick. Dwyer looks for the Superman punch but Curtis stays out of range. Dwyer lands a nice inside leg kick and another. Curtis looking to land with a flurry but Dwyer avoids them all and lands another big leg kick. Dwyer continues to attack the legs and lands a right. Both men trade big punches but Dwyer appears to land with more force. Dwyer steps in and Curtis with a solid uppercut and Dwyer drives forward and ties him up against the cage. Round 3: Dwyer continuing to land the inside leg kick at will and they trade shots and tie up against the cage. Dwyer looking for the single and Curtis defends and stuffs the takedown attempt and lands a few solid shots before stepping away. They trade in the centre of the cage and Dwyer misses a head kick and lands a right. Dwyer lands a teep to the body and they exchange another combo. They trade again and then a pair of low leg kicks from Dwyer. Curtis sticks a couple solid jabs and Dwyer puts his back on the cage and knees the thigh. Curtis lands some knees in response and connects with some shots to the body. Curtis looking for some foots stomps now and Dwyer fights his way off the cage with a hard combo. Round 4: Curtis with a stiff right and Dwyer answers with a teep. Dwyer with a solid kick to the body and sticks a couple jabs. Curtis lands a few rights before connecting with a huge right that explodes the nose of Dwyer. Curtis presses forward to look for the finish but Dwyer ties him up. Curtis looking for the kimura and Dwyer looks for one of his own. Curtis steps back and lets Dwyer to his feet. Curtis lands another combo and a huge right. Dwyer looking like he’s losing steam and eats a shot on his way in. Dwyer looking for the single but Curtis landing and remarks “there’s so much blood” to his cornerman Sam Alvey. Round 5: Dwyers nose is an absolute mess and we start the 5th with a nice combo from Dwyer and and takedown attempt but Curtis defends and gets some space. They trade and Dwyer with another teep and a huge shot. Curtis lands a big knee that drops Swyer and he steps back to let him up. Curtis sticks a jab and Dwyer with leg kick. Dwyer drops his mouthguard and bends over to pick it up with Curtis inches away, lucky Curtis didn’t take the opportunity for a knee. Dwyer looking for the single but can’t pull the legs out and seems to content to control. Aparicio breaks them up and Curtis lands against the cage. Dwyer lands and Curtis answers right back. They trade again and Curtis looking to walk Dwyer down. Dwyer with a defensive teep and lands a right. Curtis lands a combo and another big one and the fight ends with Curtis landing shots. Pro/145lbs- Lucas Neufeld (3-1) vs. Gagan Gill (2-0)
Round 1: Lucas enters to a huge ovation. The fight gets underway with Neufeld looking for the body kick and blocking a head kick from Gill. Neufeld with a ferocious flurry and Gill ties him up against the cage to slow the pace. Neufeld is able to get the takedown to side control. Gill is able to wall walk back to his feet but gets dragged back to the mat. Gill stands once more and has the body lock. Neufeld is able to spin out and looks for a single as Gill holds onto a guillotine. Neufeld down to full guard and looks to pass. Gill to his feet and Neufeld looks for the guillotine lands a knee and a combo before looking for the headlock takedown. Gill able to stand and takes the back before dropping and getting the ankle pick takedown. Gill to half guard and works to pass but Neufeld controlling the posture. Round 2: They clash with kicks to the body and both men looking to land. Both men look stunned as they land stiff shots and Neufeld drops down and drags Gill to the mat. Neufeld works for a guillotine and locks up his guard but Gill is able to slip his head out. Gill looking to posture up and land but Neufeld scrambles to his feet. Gill has the back and Neufeld looking to spin out and does. They jockey against the cage and Gill lands a knee to the body. Gill with a couple huge rights and a left. Neufeld looking for the takedown and ties him up against the cage. Neufeld steps off and lands and connects with a beautiful combo and Gill gives him one right back and Neufeld looks for the takedown. Gill to his feet amd gets a takedown of his own and settles into the guard. Neufeld looking to land from the bottom and Gill passes to side control. Round 3: Time out on the start to check on the eye of Neufeld and we’re good to go. Both men clash with leg kicks and a takeodwn by Neufeld is stuffed. Neufeld lands a huge shot and Gill gives it back. Both men landing heavy shots and Neufeld drops for another takedown. Neufeld lands and connects with a spnning elbow before unleashing hell against the cage with a massive flurry. Neufeld drops and gets the takedown to full guard but gets caught in a guillotine. Neufeld easily pulls his head free and works around to take the back. Gill to his feet and they tie up against the cage. Neufeld knees the legs and lands another spinning back elbow. Neufeld unleashes another barrage against an exhausted Gill but can’t put him away. What heart by Gil, Neufeld keeps landing and Gill continues to walk forward. Gill with a knee to the body and drops for a takedown and finally gets Neufeld’s legs out from under him. Gill tries to take the back but Neufeld stands and the final bell sounds. Lucas Neufeld defeats Gagan Gill by Unanimous Decision

Amateur/145lbs- Usman Khattak (2-2) vs. Sam Bieri (2-0)
Round 1: Huge inside leg kick by Khattak to start. They feel each other out and Bieri falls just short with a front kick. Khattak with a spinning back kick to the body and Bieri answers with a thudding leg kick. Bieri with a leg kick into a jumping kick that misses the mark. Khattak shoots for the double and drags him to the mat. Bieri landing from the bottom and works his way up against the cage. They tie up and jockey and Bieri lands a shot on the exit. They trade punches and Bieri with a leg kick. Spinning hook kick misses from Khattak and he follows up right a right. Big front leg side kick from Bieri and they trade bombs in the dying seconds. Round 2: Bieri rushes forward with a combo and puts his back on the cage. Khattak reverses positions and they trade against the cage before separating. Bieri lands a combo and Khattake comes back with a combo and shoots for the takedown but it’s stuff. They lock up and Khattak gets the throw to full guard. Bieri keeping him close and Bieri looking for a kimura sweep but Khattak stays heavy. Khattak in half guard now and lands a hard right. Round 3: Khattak sticks a jab and Bieri with a leg kick and a right. Leg kick from Khattak and Bieri lands and pushes Khattak to the mat but Khattak stands and gets the big body lock takedown to side control. Bieri works back to his feet, eats a knee to the gut and gets some space. Khattak with a big three punch combo and eats a head kick to land another right. Khattak presses him into the cage and drops for the double. Bieri making him pay with a barrage of shots but Khattak is able to secure the takedown to half guard. Usman Khattak defeats Sam Bieri by Unanimous Decision

Amateur/145lbs- Jeremy Grieve (1-0) vs. Semir Ali (1-0)
Round 1: Grieve with a leg kick and Ali ducks a right to get the takedown to quarter guard. Ali working to pass but Grieve sneaks out the back and up to his feet. Ali looking for the double and Grieve threatening with a guillotine. Ali able to free his head and continues working from the clinch. Grieve looking for the d’arce but Ali’s head slips free as Grieve tries to lock it in. Grieve hammers the body as Ali looks for the takedown and finally gets it to full guard. Grieve throwing up a triangle attempt but Ali able to defend and briefly looks for the rear-naked choke as time expires. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Ali

Round 2 Ali immediatley connects and pushes Grieve to the corner looking for the takedown. They jockey for position and Grieve now looking for the single but Ali rolls through and ends up in full guard. Grieve legs high for a triangle but Ali throws them aside and takes side control. Grieve tries to stand and Ali snatches his neck and uses it to take him back to the mat and lands in full guard. Grieve looking for another triangle but again Ali defends. Round 3: Head kick from Grieve is blocked and they scramble for a takedown but end up against the cage where Grieve is able to get to full guard. Ali sweeps and takes the back but can’t get his hooks and moves to half guard. Grieve replaces full guard and looks to control the posture. Ali breaks the posture and Grieve scrambles to his feet. They tie up against the cage and Ali drops for a double and gets caught in a guillotine and drops to the mat giving Ali an opportunity to pull his head out. Semir Ali defeats Jeremy Grieve by Unanimous Decision

Amateur/170lbs- Quinton Tait (3-1) vs. Fred Bauer (1-0)
Round 1: Tait with a quick leg kick puts Bauer off balance. They trade shots and both men already a little marked up. Tait shoots for the double but switches to a single and Bauer defends. Tait is able to get him to tje mat and settles into the guard. Tait leaking from the nose and Bauer is able to work back to his feet. Tait looks to land a right and follows up with a left hook that wobbles Bauer and referee Mike Tubbs steps in to call a halt to the fight.

Amateur/125lbs- Phil Bernate (0-0) vs. Ryan Lebedoff (0-1)
Round 1: A trio of leg kicks quiclky from Lebedoff and Bernate lands a shot and looks for the clinch. They jockey for position against the cage and Bernate steps off and lands a right and a huge uppercut. Lebedoff closes the distance and works for the takedown against the cage. Lebedoff isn’t able to secure the takedown but locks in a guillotine and jumps guard. Bernate weathers the storm and pulls his head free and gets to his feet. Bernate winging huge punches and landing a few. Lebedoff looking for the takedown and takes the back looking for the rear naked choke but time runs out. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Lebedoff

Round 2: Lebedoff immediately ducks under a combo and gets the takedown to full guard. Bernate gets the sweep and Lebedoff attempts to get back up against the cage and Bernate slams him back down and settles into the guard and lands. Lebedoff doing well to keep him close and Bernate lands before standing and dropping another punch and right back to guard. Round 3: Lebedoff with a leg kick and Bernate answers back before slamming one to the body. Lebedoff looking for the takedown and looking for the guillotine in the scramble. Bernate working for the takedown but Lebedoff stays up and gets off the cage. Lebedoff drags him to the mat and looks to pass but Bernate easily kicks him off and looks to take top position. Lebedoff briefly fights him off but Bernate settles into the guard and chips away content to ride out the round as he’s likely up on the scorecards. Phil Bernate defeats Ryan Lebedoff by Unanimous Decision

Amateur/125lbs- Luc Bernard (1-0) vs. Danny Amberson (1-0)
Round 1: We’re underway and both men trade shots. Bernard connecting with some solid shots and working for the takedown but Amberson back to his feet. Amberson catches a head kick and drags Bernard to the mat and settles into the full guard. Bernard working for an armbar from the borrom before switching to the triangle and pulling the head down. Amberson staying calm and defending by looking for hammerfists. Bernard chips away with punches before switching to the armbar and working hard for it. Amberson doing a great job of spinning out and stepping over to get himself out of trouble and survives the round. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Bernard

Round 2:Amberson looking to land and eats a shot from Bernard followed by a leg kick. Bernard lands to the body and a teep to the midsection. Both men trade shots and Amberson connects with a right but Bernard answers right back. Bernard with a head kick but doesn’t get all of it. Both fighter are trading shots but nothing significant. Round 3: Bernard with a nice leg kick that takes the feet out from under Amberson but he pops right back up and they trade shots. Bernard eats a stiff right jab and lands a couple leg kicks. Amberson with some big swings but not connecting with much power. Amberson with a solid combo and both men trading jabs and another leg kick from Bernard. Amberson with a body shot and Bernard with another hard leg kick and avoids a shot.     Damn Dwyer is a tough sob, those shots to the nose were hurting me sitting on my couch haha. Dont know how he made it those last 2 rounds, pure heart I guess. Curtis belongs in the UFC if you ask me. Also glad Gill got to stay on the card, lost 30-27 but showed alot of heart. Great exposure fighting on TFN for a guy with 2 fights comming in.
