Canadian MMA Rumour Mill – July 23, 2018

Huge Congrats to Winnipeg’s own Brad Katona who became the first Canadian winner of a non-international version of The Ultimate Fighter earlier this month. Katona dominated Jay Cuccinello en route to a Unanimous Decision victory to win the UFC contract!

…and now for the rumours!

With the vacancy left by the apparent demise of Hard Knocks Fighting in Calgary it has been announced that Unified MMA will travel 3 hours south on the QEII and venture outside of Edmonton for the first time this fall at the Genesis Centre. You can expect to see Justin Basra, Noah Ali, Chad Anheliger and Patrick Ward on the card.

The Octagon will return to Toronto for the first time in almost two years on December 8 when the newly named Scotiabank Arena (Formerly Air Canada Centre) hosts UFC 231.

A huge fight has been announced for Bellator this fall as Welterweight Champion Rory MacDonald is set for a superfight against Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi on September 29.

MacDonald will also be a part of the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix which kicks off in October and features Douglas Lima, Andrey Koreshkov, Michael Page, Paul Daley, Lorenz Larkin, Ed Ruth, Jon Fitch, Neiman Gracie, Yaroslav Amosov.

Despite a strong 3-1 start to his UFC career Jeremy Kennedy is no longer on the UFC roster. After his four fight deal expired Kennedy began negotiations with UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby who informed him that it would be a few months before a new deal would be done. Kennedy instead opted to sign with Brave Combat Federation out of Bahrain rather than endure a long layoff and says he is still on good terms with the UFC.

Kennedy will make his promotional debut when he headlines Brave 14 in Morocco taking on Danyel Pilo in a Featherweight bout.

A few new additions to Rumble in the Cage 59 in September. In the main event Justin Tavernini returns from a decade away from the cage to take on Joaquin Calderon at Bantamweight. Also on the card Derek Boyle returns against Curtis Blackmore, Josh Heinz will take on Devon Neis, Justin Basra meets Mahatma Garcia Avalos and Colton Cronkite is set to fight George Davis.

Fight Night is making some big moves as of late with their next event scheduled for September 14 in Las Vegas. Fight Night is also set for January 25 in Lethbridge and will be making their first appearance in BC in February. The first matchup set for the Vegas card is Lucas Neufeld vs. Marco Simmons, Cody McKenzie will also be on the card.

Havoc FC 13 will go down November 16 in Red Deer and will feature Ryan Machan, Devon Neis and Chris Chapman. Also on the card will be a K1 Rules kickboxing bout between Advin Omic and Matt Krayco.

Katie Saull picked up her third straight victory at KOTC: Impending Attack in Iowa against fellow Atomweight Cassie Robb. Saull is the girlfriend of Brad Katona… July has been good to the couple!

BTC Fight Promotions 4 will go down November 24 in Peterborough, Ontario. Lindsay Garbatt is expected to appear on the card.

Yoni Sherbatov picked up a Unanimous Decision victory over Luis Solorzano on the undercard of the Steve Bosse vs. Jean Pascal card this past weekend.

Evidently the bout between UFC veteran Steve Bosse and veteran Canadian boxer Jean Pascal almost didn’t happen due to an investigation into possible organized crime ties to Bosse and his manager.  The fight did go ahead as planned with Bosse ultimately falling to Pascal via TKO in the 8th round.

Craig “Wardog” Hudson picked up his first pro boxing win with a Unanimous Decision victory over Rodrigo Pacheco this weekend.
