Canadian MMA Rumour Mill – March 6, 2018

Great news for fight fans in Edmonton as city council has voted to lift the moratorium on combat sports. Mayor Don Iveson is confident that progress has been made on the recommendations set forth but states “…more work remains to be done in improving combative sports regulation in Edmonton” and the city reiterated it’s call for a provincial commission.

And now for the rumours…

    • On the heels of the announcement that the moratorium has been lifted, Unified MMA has announced that their next event will take place May 11 from the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton’s west end in Enoch. The event will be sanctioned by the Central Combative Sports Commission out of Penhold, Alberta.
  • Alex Garcia will take on Ryan Laflare in a Welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 128 on April 21 in Atlantic City.

  • TKO’s 2018 schedule has been released and is as follows: TKO 43-May, TKO 44-June 15, TKO 45-September 25, TKO 46-December 7. TKO will also introduce their “Fight Night” series with events on July 19 and October 25.
  • Original TKO veteran Icho Larenas will return to action at TKO 43 on May 4 when he takes on Adam Dyczka. Also looking like we will see Jesse Arnett defend his Bantamweight Title against the winner of Caio Machado vs. Joseph Maness, Jesse Ronson and Jonathan Meunier are also expected to be on the card… possibly against one another.
  • …and finally TKO has signed undefeated Middleweight Mariusz Ksiazkiewicz to a multi-fight contract. He is expected to make his TKO debut in the near future.

  • Battlefield Fight Leage 54 goes down March 17 in Coquitlam, BC. In the main event Cole Smith defends the Bantamweight Title against Carlos Galvan. Also on the card Saied Mirzaei makes his long awaited pro debut after going 16-3 as an amateur. Mirzaei will take on Eric McConico in a 180lb Catchweight bout.

  1. 5 year layoff for Larenas, the former UFC vet.

Last I heard, people thought he was in a Mexican prison.
