Lawler Takes On Dos Anjos in UFC Winnipeg Main Event

By:

(UFC Press Release)
Winnipeg, Canada – A pair of former UFC® world champions will throw down in a welterweight thriller at Bell MTS Centre on December 16. UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: LAWLER vs. DOS ANJOS will see former welterweight champion and No.1-ranked contender Robbie Lawler (28-11 1NC, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Florida, USA) look to take another step back towards a title shot when he meets one-time lightweight titleholder and No. 5 ranked welterweight Rafael dos Anjos (27-9, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

A dangerous knockout artist, Lawler has engaged in some of the most memorable bouts in UFC history. During his 170-pound title reign, he earned legendary wins over Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit. Following a loss to current champ Tyron Woodley, he rebounded with a sensational victory over Donald Cerrone in July. Undefeated since moving up to 170 pounds earlier this year, dos Anjos immediately cemented his contender status with an impressive victory over Tarec Saffiedine. He then followed up his welterweight debut with a dominant submission win against Neil Magny.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: LAWLER vs. DOS ANJOS will also feature a battle of light heavyweight contenders, as No.3 ranked Glover Teixeira (26-6, fighting out of Danbury, Connecticut, USA by way of Sobralia, Minas Gerais, Brazil) faces No.8 Misha Cirkunov (13-3, fighting out of Toronto, Canada by way of Riga, Latvia).

A one-time title challenger, Teixeira has fought the who’s who of the light heavyweight division. He holds victories over Rashad Evans, Ovince Saint Preux, Ryan Bader and Quinton Jackson. In his last outing, he came up short in a Fight of the Night effort against Alexander Gustafsson. Cirkunov burst into the UFC’s 205-pound scene with four consecutive stoppage wins against Nikita Krylov, Ion Cuțelaba, Alex Nicholson and Daniel Jolly. The Latvian-born fighter aims to use Teixeira as a stepping stone into title contention.

demarce, katona, marz should be and deserve as late replacements or on this card for a fight night as locals. would be nice to see a local from manitoba on this card.

This card looks better than the UFC 215 card in Edmonton, I’m a little jealous!

Here we go again with the local favorites talk…. Pretty sure the UFC can fill this card with what they have and people will still sell the venue out… a few canadians would be good yes (misha vs glover tho!!!!!) But just because the card is in Winnipeg doesnt mean we need to get riled up about not having hometown heroes on the card

    Jusr my two cents

  12. Stupid. says:

With all due respect Jay, if you think those are the two individuals the UFC should be looking at for the Winnipeg card you need to watch some more Canadian MMA. I’m just going to leave it at that.

  13. YEG UFC GUY says:

Main event should be Sheldon Westcott vs Tyron Woodley for the 170 lb title. Woodley has been ducking Westcott for years because he knows Westcott would take down down with ease in the 1st round, outmuscle him, and snag a quick submission win for the belt.

That fight needs to happen. Woodley to scared though

BJJ fan shouldn’t you be tuggin off the bjj forums? and if you noticed I mentioned as a replacement, Demarce, katona, marz. Demarce is one of the more seasoned vets in Canada and the only thing that you are implying about is his record, when most of his loses were from when he started prematurely and without management, aside from that he has rounded 5 wins out of his last 6 and has been in wars with big names even back in MFC. unlike other guys who pad records and have fought bums to have a 5-0 record, get to ufc and get smashed. Styles make fights and all i said is kid deserves his shot as I and im sure others would like to see katona, marz for local talent. I wont comment on Eperez cause all he does is run his mouth on here ever since his brother got beat up by rockstar robin black.

  21. Stone cold Steve mason says:

For real guys, who is even Eric Perez. Seems like a guy similar to a former washed up all American high school football player who was something but peaked in grade 11. What has he done in fighting that’s even remotely relevant to the Canadian scene in the last while. DEMARCE takes chances, throws himself in their with anyone and and win or loss record. He shows up 90% of the time. He is the most experienced relevant fighter in manitoba. It’s so sad the Manitoba Man scene shots on this guy. For trying to keep this sport relevant in a province with a bunch of wannabes. Who is another 145 lbs or 155 lbs fighter from the 204. That can be at him? Seriously??? He hasn’t lost to a Manitoban yet. I met him at his last fight. He is a humble guy. Hea veen through hell and back after his accident. And still holds a winning record. Give the guy a chance. Mr. Perez, if you wanna shit talk a guy. Why don’t you step up and challenge him? What the he’ll have you done for this sport in Manitoba? Who have you fought that’s even relevant to demarce’s record. UFC should have demarce vs adam Lorenz on that card to settle all the drama that went down a few years ago. At least it’s a good story in the prairie mma scene

  22. Lee says:

I like Demarce, exciting fights against tough competition. Still doesn’t belong on that UFC card.

As previously mentioned, Perez has wins over waardenberg and Nguyen. you might want to google Nguyen and see what he’s up to. I’m not saying Perez should be on the UFC card either.

    lastly, relax.

  23. Marc-Andre Drolet says:

None of these guys should be on this card. It’s a massive UFC on FOX card and isn’t dependent on local ticket sales.

Brad Katona is the guy from Manitoba who should be in the UFC, but they aren’t going to rush it just because they happen to be coming to Winnipeg.

Demarce doesn’t have a great record and would need to have relevant wins over people on the radar. I like Curtis, he’s a good kid, and has been around, but doesn’t make much sense to have him in the UFC. Let’s be serious.

    Well-loved! Thumb up 16 Thumb down 3

  24. CM says:

Lil Nog pissed hot so he’s off the card. They’re looking for a replacement for Cannonier.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

  25. Marc-Andre Drolet says:

That was the least appealing fight on the card, and he had lots of time to get injured and pull out anyways. Let’s hope this card stays intact otherwise.
