2017 Canadian National Amateur MMA Championships – Day 1 Results


The first round of the 2017 National Amateur MMA Championships kicked off from the Servus Soccer Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta today. The winners from the first round will advance to Day 2 tomorrow with the winners of those matchups advancing to the finals on Friday Night at Rumble in the Cage 54.

The winners of each respective weight class will claim their place on the Canadian National Team and will compete at the 2017 IMMAF World Championships to be held in Bahrain from November 12-19.

It should be noted that the Featherweight division had 11 competitors total and therefore 6 fighters fought for the chance to enter the Quarter-Final round with 3 advancing.

Featherweight Quarter-Finals:
Justin Knoepfli defeats Samuel Michel by TKO (Punches) in Round 3, 1:36
Ali Wasuk defeats Kirk Ackerman by Split Decision
Albaraa Atmeh defeats Sundar Gurdin by TKO (Punches) in Round 2, 1:08
Dylan Lielke defeats Randy Chung by TKO (Punches) in Round 3, 1:45

Light Heavyweight Semi-Finals:
Dane Waldal defeats Zack Benbouchta by KO (Punches) in Round 1, 0:47
Colton Croknite defeats Eric Stevens by Rear-Naked Choke in Round 1, 2:54

Middleweight Quarter-Finals:
Sheldon Best Green defeats Noah Goerz by Split Decision
James Nelson submits Daniel Yoner by Rear-Naked Choke in Round 2, 1:26
Blair De Sousa defeats Steven Siebrecht by Split Decision

Welterweight Quarter-Finals:

    It was a 5 person division so I think having the 3 byes to the semis in the first round and two fighters compete for that 4th spot in the Semis is the only way to do it. If you just have 1 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 4 fight initially then you have that one odd man out and two guys who just won their fights left… who does #5 fight?
