XFFC 13 – Live Results and Play-by-Play

XFFC returns tomorrow night with their 13th event at the Entrec Centre in Grande Prairie, Alberta titled “Future Stars”. In the main event Craig Shintani and Mike Mallot do battle for the vacant Lightweight Title. Also on the card is a phenomenal Bantamweight contest between undefeated fighters Brad Katona and Austin Ryan as well as Amateur standout turned pro Alex Martinez taking on undefeated foe Clay Dixon.

Fans can catch a live Internet PPV tonight on FITE TV HERE. If you weren’t able to make it to the Entrec Centre, Top MMA News will be cageside to bring you a live play-by-play of all the action so keep it locked right here.

Pro/155lbs- Mike Malott (4-1-1) vs. Craig Shintani (6-1)
***Pro Lightweight Title Fight
Round 1: They clash with leg kicks and Malott looks to het his hand on Shintani but he avoids the clinch and they trade some shots. Big left from Malott lands and drops Shintani who pops back up but Malott stays on top of him and connects with barrage of punches. Shintani looks to get away from trouble but Malott connects with a big right behind the ear that sees Shintani face plant, Malott holds back the follow up shot as he sees that Shintani is out and referee Andy Social steps between them.

Pro/135lbs- Brad Katona (4-0) vs. Austin Ryan (6-0)
Round 1: Front kick from Ryan and Katona catches it and lands. Ryan a low leg kick and Katona connects with a right. Ryan gets the takedown and a scramble sees Katona working against the cage. Ryan back to his feet and they jockey for position. Katona with double underhooks and Ryan looks for the old school foot stomps and Katona drops back down and gets the single briefly. Ryan pops back up and Katona takes the body lock again. They break away from the cage and Kartona missed a head kick, Ryan responds with a low leg kick and catches a head kick and takes him to the mat. Ryan lets him to his feet and Ryan with a body kick and Katona comes back with one. They tie up in the center and again Katona takes him to the cage. The get off the cage quickly and Ryan lands a straight left right before the end of the cage. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Katona

Round 2: Both men trade some solid shots and Ryan backs him up with a straight right. Ryan continues to press forward with a combo and a leg kick. Ryan ducks a right but Katona gets in and takes Ryan to the mat against the cage. Ryan trying to work to his feet but Katona staying heavy and controlling him in the corner. Katona spins him off the cage and eats a few little elbows from the bottom. Ryan locks up his guard and doing well to control the posture. Not much action on the ground and Katona with a couple short hammerfists and an elbow. Katona passes to half guard and looks to land but Ryan doing enough to avoid anything too damaging but some shots still getting through. Katona raises up and connects with a couple forearm shots and the round is over. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Katona

Round 3: Ryan raises his for the touch but Katona ignores it. Double left by Katona and a front kick by Ryan. Leg kick for Katona and another and he shoots for the single but Ryan stuffs it and defends against the cage. Ryan high kick but its blocked and Katona throws one but Ryan uses it to take him to the mat in side control. Katona scrambles but Ryan takes half guard and lands a few chipping shots. Katona stands against the cage and Ryan lands a knee to the body. Katona reverses position and presses him against the cage and works for the body lock takedown. Katona in half guard but can’t get his arms free to land. Katona works for a guillotine choke from the top but lets go and connects with a couple elbows which opens up the neck. Katona sinks a rear-naked choke and the exhausted Ryan is forced to tap with short time left in the fight.

Pro/155lbs- Clay Dixon (4-0) vs. Alex Martinez (1-0)
Round 1: Thunderous reception for hometown hero Martinez. Leg kick for Martinez and an errant low blow but no timeout. Dixon with a leg kick and Martinez right back with one of his own. Dixon catches a kick to the body and takes Martinez to the mat and a wild scramble finally sees Dixon in north/south but Martinez looking for an armbar from the bottom and switched to a triangle. Dixon is able to get to half guard and landing elbows and a hammerfist. Dixon grabs an arm and looks for a sweep but Martinez is able to get the back. Dixon rolls to his back and looks for a single and gets to his feet and they’re back to the center of the cage. Great action in the first and Martinez just falls short but lands a leg kick. Dixon lands an overhand right and Marinez with a combo and a high kick. Martinez drills him with an elbow and Dixon slows the pace and is able to drag Martinez to the mat as time runs out. Round 2: Martinez with a kick to the body and a front kick to the face and a combo. Martinez with a takedown to side control. Dixon scramble to his feet but Martinez drags him right back down and eats some huge vicious elbows. Dixon is busted open but showing tons of heart and scrambles up. Martinez drags him back down and continues to crack him on the ground. Martinez now in half guard and unleashes a barrage of rights. Dixon still working to get back up but Martinez continues to punish Dixon with massive elbows. The towel flies in from Dixon’s corner at the opposite end of the cage but referee Thomas Collins has his eyes on the fighters, as he should and doesn’t see the towel. Only a short time later Collins steps in and stops the fight and Dixon walks back to his corner a bloody mess. Rather than celebrate Martinez immediately pops up and follows him back to show his respect and embrace his foe.
Alex Martinez defeats Clay Dixon by TKO (Elbows) in Round 2, 2:54

Pro/125lbs- Sam Franchi (0-0) vs. Vaz Lep (0-2)
Round 1: Franchi lands a right and a leg kick and Lep swinging and missing. Franchi lands a leg kick and a massive left that drops Lep flat on his back. Franchi pounces on top and rains down a flurry of relentless punches and lands a half dozen lighting fast bombs before referee Andy Social can step in to rescue Lep from any further punishment.

Pro/170lbs- Danny Doig (2-3) vs. William Quintal (0-0)
Round 1: Quintal with a front kick to the body and Doig catches one but Quintal lands a barrage of punches and Doig lets it go. Quintal presses forward but Doig leans back and avoids the shots. Quintal methodically kicking the legs and connects with a solid combo. They tie up against the cage and Doig tries to get the body lock but Quintal  inches around towards the back, lands a knee to the body and sneaks around to the back quickly locking in a standing rear-naked choke. Quintal drags him down to the mat and sinks his hooks and Doig is tapping immediately.

Am/155lbs- Neal Gottzmann (2-0) vs. Cam MacDonald (2-2)
***Amateur Lightweight Title Fight
Round 1: Gottzmann with a leg kick to open the action and MacDonald presses forward with a combo but Gottzmann stays out of range. Both men feeling each other out and not rushing anything. Gottzmann lands a leg kick and MacDonald cracks him back with a kick to the body. Gottzmann touches the chin and MacDonald responds and calls him on. Gottzmann with another leg kick and a frenetic combo from MacDonald coming straight at him but can’t quite get all of it. MacDonald charges forward with another combo and cracks him with a good one. MacDonald is coming straight forward and Gottzmann mostly able to stay out of range and avoid taking too much damage. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Gottzmann

Round 2: MacDonald again with an attack straight ahead and a solid leg kick at the end. Gottzmann closes the distance and gets the takedown to full guard where he works the body. MacDonald controlling the posture and Gottzman walks his way around to side control and MacDonald gives up his back and Gottzman goes to work and has the right arm trapped and the rear-naked choke sunk in with only one arm under the neck and controlled the left arm with his other arm and with no arms free to defend MacDonald can’t hold on long and is forced to tap.

Am/130lbs- Austin Russell (1-0) vs. Jarrett Vornbrock (6-2)
Round 1: Vornbrock misses a leg kick and Russell lands to the body. Vornbrock eats a solid knee to the body to get in close and get the body lock. Vornbrock latches on and takes the back. Vornbrock sinks his hooks and begins to work for the choke. Russell is able to scramble his way out and ends up in guard but Vornbrock catches an arm and looks for the armbar. Russell is able to get himself out of trouble and moves to side control. Russell lands a quick barrage of punches. Vornbrock again looks for an armbar but Russell pulls his arm free and unleashes a vicious attack on the ground with a half dozen heavy shots that relieve Vornbrock of his consciousness.

Am/145lbs- Grey Patino (3-6) vs. Justin Knoepfli (0-0)
Round 1: Patino with a leg kick to open and a shot to the body. Patino with another leg kick and they clash with another. Knoepfli catches a kick and drives him into the cage where they exchange knees to the body. They battle for position and Patino with a solid knee to the body. Patino with a tight clich and a trio of knees to the body and Patino working for the takedown but Knoepfli defends who now lands a knee to the body. Knoepfli now looking for a guilotine but Patino pulls out only to eat an uppercut. The two men trade knees and little shots in close as the round comes to a close. Round 2: A loud chant for Knoepfli and they get back to action. Patino lands a leg kick but Knoepfli works for a guillotine choke. Patino gets the takedown against the cage but Knoepfli right back to his feet. They jocket for position against the cage and Patino lands a right and a knee to the body before they separate. Patino lands from the outside and a leg kick. Patino with another leg kick and Knoepfli pops him with a right. Uppercut from Knoepfli and takes him into the cage and lands. Patino tries to secure the clinch but Knoepfli gets free and works for a guillotine late but time runs out. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Knoepfli

Round 3: A hug to open the third and back to the violence as they exchange leg kicks and a right cross lands by Knoepfli. Patino looking for a takedown but Knoepfli looks for a guillotine and lands a couple knees to the body. Patino back up and shoots for a takedown but Knoepfli punishes the body with punches and a brutal knee to the body. Knoepfli locks in a vicious guillotine choke and Patino in visible pain admirably holds on for a good 10-15 seconds but ultimately is forced to tap. Knoepfli celebrates his first amateur win and a great fight with a backflip.

Am/175lbs- Pita Tuiloma (0-1) vs. Brock Holmes (0-2)
Round 1: Tuiloma with a kick to the body and Holmes lands a right. Both men trading some little shots to feel each other out. Tuiloma shoots for a takedown but doesn’t quite commit. Reaches in again and lands a big right. Holmes lands a knee to the head which is against the amateur rules and referee Thomas Collins takes a point and they restart. Tuiloma shoots and drags Holmes down but stays on his feet Holmes stands and they exchange big shots. Holmes begins to land shots at will connecting with punches as Tuiloma tries to retreat but can’t get away from the attack of Holmes. Holmes continues to land punches and knees to the body at will. The ten second warning sounds and Holmes keeps firing away with just seconds left Collins has seen enough and errs on the side of fighter safety as Tuiloma is offered no defense and steps in to call off the fight.

Am/145lbs- Jay Carson (0-0) vs. Isaiah Bedard (0-2)
Round 1: Bedard with a trio of leg kick and gets the ankle pick takedown. Bedard working for a guillotine choke and sinks it deep and locks up his guard. Carson presses him into the cage in an attempt to free himself. Bedard switches his grip but Carson is able to escape back to his feet. A bit of a scramble and Bedard settles into the guard. Carson tying him up and throwing up some defensive shots from the bottom and Bedard not able to get his posture and time runs out. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Bedard

Round 2: Bedard again with the low ankle pick to guillotine attempt this time with the arm in and an audible gurgling sound from Carson but he’s weatheroing the storm and gets back to his feet. Bedard takes him right back to the mat and postures up from the guard. Carson is able to pull him close and avoid an onslaught. Carson staying out of trouble but can’t be content on the bottom. Carson gives up his back and Bedard begins to work for the choke as he gets the body triangle. Carson is able to defend as time runs down. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Bedard

Round 3: Lets see if Bedard opens with the ankle pick again and he does but this time Carson avoids it and Bedard instead uses a double to take him back to guard. Carson throwing his legs up for an armbar or triangle but Bedard keeps control. Carson still able to control the posture and lands a hammerfist from the bottom. Bedard able to get a few little shots through and it looks as though Bedard is going to cruise to a shutout on the scorecards. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Bedard
Isaiah Bedard defeats Jay Carson by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Am/185lbs- Jared Tordoff (1-2) vs. Joe Westbrook (0-0)
Round 1: Tordoff lands immediately and gets the quick takedown passing right to mount. Westbrook gives up his back and Tordoff begins to work for a rear-naked choke. Westbrook fighting the hands and is able to survive but only briefly as Tordoff cinches it in and forces the tap.

    Shots to the back of the head are tough to call standing up. One move or head turn and the shot becomes legal / illegal. If some one stands and turns back while someone is punching that’s tough to call.

    What do I know though I’m normally the guy getting punched :/

    I haven’t seen the fight so I can’t comment directly on this instance but what Mike Kent says is correct.

    If a fighter moves/turns and gets hit in the back of the head, it is not an illegal blow. It’s only illegal if the attacking fighter intended to hit their opponent there.
