Hard Knocks 53 – Play-by-Play
Hard Knocks 53 goes down tonight from the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, Alberta. In the main event Noah Ali takes on Corey Gower at a Catchweight of 140lbs. Also on the main card will be a battle of undefeated Bantamweight prospects as Justin Basra meets Thomas Godin.

Pro/140lbs- Noah Ali (8-3) vs. Corey Gower (6-3)
Round 1: Gower aggressive and leg kick to start. Ali looks for takedown but it’s stuffed. Gower lands and follows up with a leg kick. Gower presses the action against the cage and Ali looking for a guillotine but Gower peels it off. Ali in north/south and Gower trying to work back to his feet. Ali scrambles to the back and working for the rear-naked choke. Gower defending well and Ali lands a few shots. Gower firing shots backwards and Ali can’t sink the choke so he opts to keep chipping away. Ali has the body triangle and still working for the choke. Ali keeps chipping away and Gower gets to his back briefly and Ali with punches for the final 15 seconds but nothing significant getting through. Top MMA News scores round 10-9 Ali
Round 2: Ali looks to land but can’t quite catch him and avoids a combo. Cower catches a leg kick and lands a solid right. Gower throws a body kick but Ali catches it and gets the takedown. Gower is able to pop back to his feet and lands a right. Gower connects and a solid inside leg kick. Gower with two more. High kick doesn’t quite get all over it for Gower. Nice left touches the chin of Ali and he responds by shooting for the takedown. Ali puts his back against the cage but Gower gets the reversal and takes the back. Ali is able to get back to his feet and they separate. Hard left lands from Gower and Ali shoots but gets stuffed. Gower lands again and Ali can’t answer back as Gower gets right back out of range. Round 3: Ali connects with a little shot and Gower responds with a leg kick and they exchange another. Gower lands and Ali with an overhand right. Gower with a leg kick and a body kick and Ali lands a pair. Ali with the double to guard and works to pass but Gower keeps him in half. Ali looks for a guillotine but Gower peels the arm off and gets to his knees. Gower gets to his feet and lands a front kick to the body. Gower with a knee to the body and a kick to the body but Ali shoots and gets the takedown. Both men landing little shots but not a whole lot of action. Round 1: Neufeld opens with a leg kick and Nguyen falls short with a combo. More leg kicks from Neufeld and looks to land a looping right but Nguyen stays out of range. Neufeld gets the Thai clinch but Nguyen breaks away. Neufeld with a nice combo and Nguyen answers back and another combo. Neufeld with a kick to the body and a big welt on the left side of Nguyen’s ribs. Nguyen presses him against the cage he backs off and lands. Round 2: Neufeld with leg kick and drives hard for the takedown but Nguyen pops back up and lands a combo against the cage. Neufeld gets the takedown to guard. Nguyen looking for an armbar from the bottom but lets go. Nguyen with another armbar attempt and Neufeld pulls his head free and yet another attempt and Neufeld defends again. Round 3: Nguyen lands against the cage and Neufeld with a leg kick and another. Nguyen with a nice combo and catches a leg kick and lands a right. Nguyen connecting and staying out of the range of Neufeld’s counters. Nguyen stuffs a takedown and stays on his feet. Nguyen lands a few and Nuefeld is swinging and missing. Round 4: Neufeld with a leg kick and a shot is stuffed by Nguyen. They tie up and Nguyen knees the body. They separate and Neufeld looks for another takedown and Nguyen again stuffs it, and again. Nguyen lands and tries another takedown and Nguyen continues to defend them easily. Nguyen with a combo and Neufeld too desperate for the takedown as Nguyen sees them coming from way too far out and easily defends. Neufeld finds a burst of energy with a flurry against the cage and finally gets the takedown against the cage. Neufeld gets mount and lands a few but it might have been too late in the round. Round 5: Neufeld with a leg kick and Nguyen fires back with a combo. Neufeld again goes to a takedown from too far and Nguyen avoids it. Nguyen continues to land, catches a kick and connects. Both men connect with a flurry and a leg kick from Nguyen. Neufeld works hard for the takedown and gets Nguyen to the mat. Neufeld takes the back and Nguyen stands. Neufeld drags him back down and works for the rear-naked choke. Nguyen is able to spin but is mounted. Neufeld to the back again and working for the choke. Lucas Neufeld defeats John Nguyen by Unanimous Decision
Pro/265lbs-Dustin Joynson (1-0) vs. Chris Catala (1-3)
Round 1: Joynson with a front kick to start and sails a spinning back kick over the head of Catala. Catala chases and lands and Joynson gets ahold of him and lands knees against the cage. Catala answers back but Joynson landing more consistently. Catala lands a couple shots to the body and Joynson comes back with one of his own and a couple more knees. Both men trading knees and body shots. Joynson gets the body lock and muscles Catala to the ground into half guard. Joynson chips away with punches to the body and head. Catala is cut on the hairline and Joynson continues to land punches and elbows. Catala is able to get back to his feet but Joynson controls him against the cage and they trade knees. Round 2: The doctor comes in to check on Catala’s cut and gives the go ahead for Catala to continue. Joynson with a leg kick and Catala answers with a right. A huge head kick rocks Catala and Joynson follows up with a big right. Before referee Luke Boutin is able to get between them Joynson lands another big right and Catala lands face first on the mat unconscious.

Round 1: They clash and tie up in the centre of the cage and Godin drags him to the mat. Basra pops back up and gets a takedown of his own. Godin looking for a triangle but Basra picks him up and gets the Rampage-esque power bomb slam. Godin survives and is able to lock on and inverted triangle. Basra escapes and is in north-south and gets back to his feet. Basra takes him back to the mat and again Godin looks for a triangle but Basra postures and escapes and lands shots. Basra gets full mount and lands shots forcing Godin to give up his back. Basra continues to rain down punches and Godin again turns to his stomach. Godin doing just enough to stave off the referee and is able to get free. Basra gets side control and continues the onslaught. Basra with some short elbows and back to north/south. Round 2: A lengthy delay at the start of the second as the corner pad is coming off. The fighters obviously excited to get back at it as they meet and exchange immediately. Basra gets him to the mat and gets full mount and rains down punches. Godin gets his half guard back and finally full guard but Basra still able to land. Basra postures and lands big punches and latches onto an arm triangle but abandons it while in guard. Basra drives him against the cage and lands several big punches and a trio of knees to the body. Godin is able to get to his feet but Basra unloads a solid flurry. Basra with another takedown and Godin on all fours and Basra with more knees to the body and lands a barrage of punches that forces the end of the fight.

Pro/205lbs-Kris Lee (3-1) vs. Bruno Cesar (2-4)
Round 1: Lee with a leg kick and a high kick falls short and more leg kicks. Cesar presses forward and lands before following up with a couple more leg kicks. They trade leg kicks and Cesar presses forward with punches. Cesar drives him into the cage and drags him to the mat to side control. Cesar to side control and lands punches and short elbows. Lee throws up a triangle attempt but switches to an armbar and Cesar pulls his arm free and stands before passing back to side control. Lee replaces his half guard and briefly looks for a kimura. Round 2: Lee lands and Cesar answers right back and ties him up against the cage where he works for a single. Cesar drags it out and Lee looks to hang onto a kimura. Cesar easily defends and locks in an arm triangle choke and forces the tap.

Round 1: Spohn opens with an inside leg kick and falls short with a high kick. Magon answers back with a leg kick of his own and both men are cautiously looking for their range. Both men connect and Spohn comes back with a combo that misses the mark. Magon rushes him with punches and gets him to the mat in half guard. Solid short elbow lands from Magon and he lands to the body. Magon continues to work the body and Spohn gives up his back. Spohn defending well not allowing Magon to sink the choke. Round 2: Spohn with an inside leg kick and Magon’s inner thighs showing the effect and a high kick from Spohn glances off. Spohn with a solid jab and a huge left, right combo connects. Another combo from Spohn but blocked this time and Spohn lands one and a front kick. Spohn side steps an attack from Magon and drops him with a pair of hard shots before pouncing and looking for a finish. Magon survives and is able to get his guard and slow the attack. Magon controlling the posture but Spohn able to chip away with little elbows and Magon is cut right on the hairline. Spohn is able to posture up and continues to chip away with punches. Round 3: As soon as the bell sounds referee Andy Social pauses the action to allow the doctor to check the cut and he says we’re good to go. Spohn with another hard inside leg kick and a combo. Magon with a thudding leg kick that gets oohs and ahhs from the crowd. Magon lands a hard right but nothing to follow. Spohn with a combo and Magon lands a kick to the body. Spohn lands another combo and definitely looks like the fresher fighter as he connects again. Spohn landing at will and another leg kick. A front kick from Magon just missed and Spohn comes right back with a shot. Spohn sends Magon into the cage with another and a body shot. Both men exchange a solid flurry and Spohn shoots for the takedown to half guard. Round 1: MacKenzie immediately shoots for a takedown but Laursen stuffs it and stays up. MacKenzie works for a choke and gets the big slam. Laursen escapes to his feet and they tie up against the cage. MacKenzie drags him hard to the mat in side control before passing to mount. MacKenzie gets ahold of an armbar and Laursen tries to scramble out but MacKenzie is a dog on a bone and straightens the arm to force the tap.

Round 1: Side kick by Chung to open and a combo followed by a leg kick. Hunt missing with a spinning back kick and eats a right. Nice leg kicks by Chung and Hunt lands a right. They tie up against the cage and Chung looks for a takedown. Hunt tries to work to the back but Chung ends up on top. Hunt gets the sweep and stands up. Hunt with a front kick to the midsection. Round 2: Hunt looks to land but Chung ties him up and lands some of his own. Hunt with a leg kick and Chung right back with a combo. Big spinning back fist misses from Hunt and Chung cracks him. Hunt with a leg kick and a right. Chung lands and Hunt answers right back and Chung gets the takedown and works for an arm triangle. Hunt is able to free himself but Chung postures up and lands a barrage of punches that force referee Luke Boutin to step in.

Round 1: Perdue with a leg kick and Perdue responds with a combo. Heim comes forward with a wild barrage and Perdue lands a big shot and gets the takedown before taking his back and sinking the rear-naked choke forcing the quick and emphatic tap.

Round 1: Burham with a jab and a leg kick before closing the distance and getting the single to guard. Poulin works his way to his feet but Poulin drags him right back to the mat. Poulin looks to escape out the back but eats a couple solid elbows and Burnham stays on top. Poulin regains his guard and looks to stand but Burnham keeps him on his back and Poulin is busted open. Burnham takes the back briefly before looking for a guillotine against the cage. Poulin gets to his feet but Burnham latched on to a single. Poulin frees his leg and lands some jabs. Round 2: Burnham lands some solid shots and is able to get the takedown against the cage to half guard. Burnham lands an elbow and Poulin regains his guard before standing back to his feet. Burnham presses him against the cage and Poulin lands a couple shots before getting some distance. Poulin working for takedown but Burnham ends up on top in full guard. Burnham passes to half guard but Poulin controlling his posture.
