Meunier Signs With UFC, Debuts In Ottawa

Canada’s best kept secret in MMA is a secret no more as Jonathan Meunier has officially signed with the UFC. The Tristar alum will not have much time to revel in the news as he makes his debut on short notice replacing team mate Alex Garcia against Colby Covington at UFC Ottawa just 9 days away. The news of the signing was revealed on Twitter by Meunier’s manager Stephane Patry while the match up was confirmed by Ariel Helwani and Marc Raimondi of MMAFighting.

Meunier who is undefeated in 7 professional bouts is actually riding a 18 fight unbeaten streak if you include his amateur outings. Known as the “District” he has finished all 7 of his pro opponents 6 of which were downed in the first round including veterans like Stephen Martinez and Yannis Jacquet. Most recently he captured the inaugural LAMMQ Welterweight title by defeating the then undefeated Franics Charbonneau by submission.

Covington, a member of American Top Team, arrived in the UFC with a 5-0 record and proceeded to pick up victories in his first 3 Octagon outings over the likes of Anying Wang, Wagner Silva and Mike Pyle. Most recently he suffered his first professional defeat to Warlley Alves by first round submission at UFC 194 last December.

UFC Ottawa goes down June 18th from the Arena at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario. The card is headlined by a Welterweight contenders match up between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson while Patrick Cote looks to break into the UFC’s top 15 rankings in a bout with Donald Cerrone.
