Dear Calgary Commission this is what is wrong with your stupid amatuer rules:

The fighters are really evenly matched in the clinch until Daniel again pulls guard

No disrespect to Daniel Elsdon as he is simply using the rules to their fullest but this is not MMA.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 9 Thumb down 10

The whole event was worth every cent as all the fighters came to scrap and some didnt look like they were fighters at all especialy the Hague girl shocked me because she was puking in the bucket before she got in the cage and the doctor was called to see if she was fight worthy and my entire table didnt give her more than 20 seconds before she gets wrecked but she went from lathargic and sick to wild beast on the ground the second the fight was on and won the fight. the last second KO by Elmer was spectacular 4:59 and it was a great call by the ref to not allow it to continue as there corner said he made it to the bell but the ref said NO hes done as he stumbled to the corner even the girls agreed he was out cold before the faceplant to the mat from the head kick. we totaly expected a quick night of subpar fights but we enjoyed the fights and the after party too was fantastic Great Job KOTC

Thanks Dan! Laurel may not look like a fighter, but I knew the guys from Way of the Dragon would not let her come out if she didn’t have the skills to compete.

As far as matchmaking, I would like to give the credit to the coaches and trainers who helped to make sure we had suitable opponents for their fighters. In this sport, anything can happen, but I like everyone to have a fight they are comfortable with.

I think if you ask any of the fighters, they will all tell you they could have won their match.

Thanks to everyone who fought and helped with the event, you are all what makes this worth it!

There are weigh in photos here and I think they will all be posted on Top MMA News soon. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.808217495957375.1073741874.626052790840514&type=3&pnref=story

  10. Jay says:

@cody – Amateur fighters in Calgary are not allowed to punch in the head when on the ground. This allows for stupid stuff like jumping to guard in an MMA fight.

This also limits the development of a fighter on two fronts – the first in being that the fighter develops a set of skills that benefit the amateur structure and that they will have to abandon when they go pro – the second is that they are not, in a safe way, learning to deal with aspects of the MMA game (ground and pound) while in amateur and have to immediately adjust to it when they turn pro.

You have only to look as far as Keegan Oliver for an example of an athlete that was completely let down by this model.

  11. Slim says:

I’ve heard the Ammy rules might be changing and possibly will have a progression to allow gnp, head kicks, etc…after a few fights.

That way newer fighters can get experience without too much damage, some who just want to try the sport can do it safely before truly and fully committing to it.
