John Alessio is calling it a career following 17 years in the sport.

On Facebook, the Duncan, British Columbia native announced his decision saying,

I write this post with a lot of mixed emotions. For the past 17 years, I lived out one of my dreams of being a pro MMA fighter. In fact, when I started, it wasn’t even called MMA yet. I have competed at the highest level and traveled the world. From the small town of Duncan, B.C, Canada to living in California and now Las Vegas, this sport has given me so much. I have met some amazing people and made some life long friends. I have had the honor of fighting and training with some of the world’s best fighters. I got to enjoy the moments of putting championship belts around my waist, having my hands raised in victory, hearing the crowd cheer and scream and also the bitter feeling of defeat. But like all good things, they come to an end. I believe that now is the time for me to put the gloves away and close this amazing chapter in my life. It is time for the next step of my life. THANK YOU!!!!!! I love you all!!!!

Alessio retires as one of Canada’s most prolific fighters after compiling a 35-17 record with two No Contests.  One of those No Contests came at the end of his career in his most recent fight with Dave Rickels.

“The Natural” started his career in British Columbia and won his first two contests in Victoria’s Ultimate Battle organization on the same day.  That was way back in 1998 and Alessio has fought in the UFC, WEC, Pride, Dream, Bellator and almost every other promotion.

A gifted athlete and fighter, Alessio debuted in the UFC in a Welterweight title match against Pat Miletich.  A UFC victory always eluded John, but he defeated some big names outside the Octagon including Pete Spratt, Luigi Fioravanti, Chris Clements, and War Machine.

John was always generous with his time to Top MMA News and we hope he continues to be a commenter on the site.  Top MMA News would like to thank John Alessio for a great career and for thrilling fans throughout the world with his battles in the cage!

    Grats Man

I can only remember you as little John, always working your assets off and one of the most polite, respectable kids i’ve ever met. I always knew you’d be a great person/father and all round decent individual. Please take care and all the best in the future.
