Bad times for Canadian MMA.  As mentioned on the site this week, Toronto and Montreal have both lost their 2014 UFC dates.  Some say this has to do with Canada losing their appetite for MMA.  I wonder if this has to do with Sportsnet having the rights to NHL hockey this fall.  Who knows what the reason is but at least our friends in Halifax are still on the UFC’s radar for an October event!

  • Rumour has it Rolly Delorme will take on one of Asia’s top up and comers Yuta “Ulka” Sasaki (17-1) at UFC Fight Night 48 in Macau! So this is what Rolly is up against… Sasaki was the 2010 Shooto Rookie Tournament Champion, as well as Shooto’s Pacific Rim #1 Contender for the World Title, as well as defeated ZST’s champ! The good news… Sasaki’s only loss comes to a guy with a similar last name to Delorme’s, Guy Delumeau! Let’s go Rolly!
  • Scary incident for Jer Kornelsen cutting weight for his BFL fight. Here’s what he had to say… “So I passed out and stopped breathing in the sauna trying to make weight. I guess they did CPR on me for a while and I came too in the hospital.. Seriously pissed off and feel horrible. Sorry to my team, Battlefield and mostly my opponent!”
  • David Perron has inked a multi-fight deal with Battlefield Fight League. Perron will make his promotional debut on August 23rd, 2014 versus Ryan Ballingall at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC!

  • One of Jeff Joslin‘s top students, Paul Jalbert, will take his 2-0 record to Old Orchard Beach, Maine and take on John “Gentleman” Turner (4-1) at King of the Beach on August 23rd! I remember seeing Son of the Beach about 10 years ago on TV, hopefully King of the Beach will be better!
  • Charmaine Tweet‘s Invicta fight against Veronica Rothenhausler has forced her to postpone her boxing debut to a future card.
  • Mike Ricci will take on George Sotiroupolos at Titan FC 29
  • Matt Dwyer‘s UFC debut has been rescheduled to October 5th in Halifax!
  • Some serious diet action in Saskatoon. Kurt Southern is dropping to 145lbs and Adam Lorenz is going down to 135lbs!
  • Wanderlei Silva will be giving a seminar on August 20 at Victory MMA Center in Montreal.

Wow. We have amateur fighters who arnt even being paid a cent that are damn near killing themselves trying to make weight in the sauna.

This weight cutting nonsense needs to stop

  2. Jamie says:

IMO there should be a double weigh in for amateurs. Set a maximum weight cut limit, may 10 lbs or less.

  3. Riggs says:

Like many, I agree with jamie, but until amateur rules are unified throughout each province, it will be difficult. It seems every province has different requirement such as, some require headgear and shin pads, while others are identical to pros with the exception of time limits and fight purses. One province would have to take the initiative and put such rules in place

  4. The Spartan says:

When done right, a proper diet and weight cut can be a legitimate advantage and possibly a key factor in a fight. I’m a big boy, but know my body and have a great team behind me.

There is no reason for a set weigh class in am mma. The ufc essentially decided to make a limited group of weigh classes for branding purposes. Unlike watered down boxing. 5 pound differences (for example) would allow like competitors to have the experience they desire to see if they should go pro.

No Olympic gold for mma fighters yet, but a proper unified am mma would allow structure and a path of readiness for a pro career.
This job isn’t for everyone , why not let it be as fair as possible to find out.

    And especially for free…

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 5 Thumb down 5

  5. Hawkes says:

Choosing a weight class and making sure the cut is reasonable is as much a coaches responsibility as it is the athletes. If an ammy fighter is doing huge cuts shame on the coach for letting that happen. you have to ease guys into this.

  8. weird, can’t imagine lorenz at 135, he’s a big man who looked like he cut hard to 145!

  9. Hawkes says:

might be pushing the boundary a bit too much cutting that low. there is a point of diminishing returns.

  10. Lorenz will have a huge head at 135

It’s the Rumour Mill, maybe it’ll happen and maybe it won’t…I have been experimenting with a different diet and ways of training though.

You think that my head would look big…just imagine what else might…hmmm, it might be worth the extra cut…
