ECC Announces June 21 Main Event

When I talked to Lyndon Whitlock and Michael Spoenlein about the possibility of facing each other after their wins at Extreme Cage Combat 20 in April, both guys seemed to welcome the idea. After some calls were made, the challenge has been accepted by both men as they will square off in the main event at ECC 21 which will take place June 21st at the Multi-Purpose Room of the Halifax Forum.

Michael Spoenlein has been one of the highest rated prospects in the country. After winning his debut against Chance Whalen at Elite 1 in September,  he submitted decorated wrestler James Mancini with an armbar at ECC 19 in January. To prove that it was no fluke, he submitted Morgan Rhynes at ECC 20 with a triangle despite Rhynes breaking his nose in the fight.

After hovering around the top 10 list at 145 for a couple of years, Lyndon Whitlock decided to make the jump down to 135 this year. Whitlock looked sharp in his Bantamweight debut against Ryan Connor at ECC 20 where he shown major improvements in both his takedowns and takedown defense. Whitlock was able to control the pace on the feet and kept Connor at bay. While his ground game looked good in his last fight, he will probably be looking to keep this one on the feet with Spoenlein and his Jiu Jitsu skills.

The winner of this fight will likely be looking at a title shot against champion Syd Barnier who has yet to defend his title after defeating Stephane Pelletier at ECC 15. While an ECC title shot would be nice, to get the possibility of a UFC shot could be a possibility including a show scheduled in Halifax on October 4th. Either way fans in Halifax will be in for a treat on June 21st.

Yea boy! Going back out to Halifax! love that city! Knowing Lyndon, I wouldn’t assume he wants to stand-up with Sponlein. Since he knows Sponlein has good Jiu-Jitsu, I would assume Lyndon will take him down.

Great main event fight, both tough guys!

Anyone know what happened to Chester Post or Patrick Vallee in regards to ECC? We saw them on the last card and wondered if we’d see them on this one?

We asked immediately after the last show for either fight for Barnier, who is eager to show his ever improving skillset in Halifax. Bottom line is it is very tough to find Syd fights.. ECC wanted to do it this way. Either opponent will be fun in October.
