Canadian Light-Heavyweight Rankings – April 2014

By:

Just when Canadians were about to see a bout to determine the #1 Canadian Light-Heavyweight at TUF Nations between Ryan Jimmo and Steve Bossé, The Boss decided to retire. That’s too bad. His retirement and Nick Penner’s left a couple of holes to fill in the Top 10. Take a look to see who made the cut.

Top 10 Canadian Light-Heavyweights

1. Ryan Jimmo (19-3) – Previous Rank (1) – Since our last rankings, Ryan Jimmo lost a bout to Jimi Manuwa due to a leg injury.  More recently, Jimmo showed off his quick and powerful right hand to KO Sean O’Connell on the TUF Nations Finale.  Win or lose, the gap between Jimmo and the rest of the Canadian Light-Heavyweights is HUGE.  Next fight: TBD

2. Kalib Starnes (16-8) – Previous Rank (NR) – In his last fight, Kalib Starnes finished Dwayne Lewis in one of the top knockouts of 2013 by a Canadian (#3 in fact).  That win coupled with a quick TKO over Clay Davidson at 205 enabled Starnes to debut on this list at #2!  That’s not all, Starnes also recorded wins in 2013 at Middleweight (David Perron) and Heavyweight (Tim Hague).  In his next bout, the BC fighter heads back up to Heavyweight to fight a former UFC fighter.   Next fight: vs Dave Herman at Titan 28 on May 16

3. Roger Hollett (13-5) – Previous Rank (3)Roger Hollett made it to the UFC but went 0-2 with losses against Fabio Maldonado and Matt Hamill.  Unfortunately, Hollett was released and it does not look like he has a chance to fight on the Halifax UFC card this fall. There were rumours that “The Hulk” was going to fight Rodney Wallace on an upcoming Hard Knocks card, but that fight never came to fruition.  Next fight: TBD.

Misha Cirkunov (photo: Jeremy Penn)

4. Misha Cirkunov (7-2) – Previous Rank (8) – With an impressive finish of Martin Desilets at Provincial Fighting Championship 2, Misha Cirkunov vaults up the rankings.  Well known as a world class grappler, Cirkunov came out as a southpaw and displayed sharp striking skills in his last outing and those new found tools will serve him well as he sets his sights on bigger promotions. Next fight: TBD

5. Dwayne Lewis (13-9) – Previous Rank (5) – A first glance at Dwayne Lewis‘ recent record seems to show that Lewis is on the biggest slide of his MMA career since 2008.  However, the three losses that Lewis has had in his last four fights have all come against former or current UFC fighters.  Lewis would like to forget his last bout where he was knocked out by Kalib Starnes.  A dominant win against Clay Davidson at Prestige FC in his hometown of Fort McMurray would certainly help him forget it.  Next fight: vs Clay Davidson at Prestige FC 5 on May 16

6. David Loiseau (23-10) – Previous Rank (NR)David Loiseau is the second former UFC Middleweight to debut on the Top 10 Canadian Light-Heavyweight rankings.  “The Crow” has fought twice at 205 over the past year.  First, he won a decision against Caleb Grummet at Challenge MMA 2 and then he quickly KO’d Mike Kent at ECC 18 to win the promotion’s Light-Heavyweight title.  With the wins, Loiseau is now on a streak of four consecutive victories.  Next fight: TBD

7. Martin Desilets (11-4) – Previous Rank (NR)Martin Desilets was ranked as high as #3 on this list and was #5 when he was removed due to inactivity. ‘Stress’ recently came back to MMA following almost a three year hiatus.  Unfortunately, he came back to a loss against Misha Cirkunov, but his past record, with two wins over Victor Valimaki, is strong enough to place him at #7.  Next fight: TBD

8. Tim Chemelli (10-4) – Previous Rank (7) Tim Chemelli stepped up to fight two higher ranked fighter in 2013 and came out on the losing end of both bouts.  First, he took on Razak Al-Hassan and was quickly submitted in the first round.  Then, he took on Dwayne Lewis and dropped a three round decision.  In early June, Chemelli will step up to fight another tough fighter at KOTC in Cold Lake.  Will he be able to stop his losing streak against Tony Lopez?  Next fight: vs Tony Lopez at KOTC: Mach 1 on June 6

9. Todd Stoute (5-1) – Previous Rank (10)Todd Stoute rebounded from his first career loss with a quick stoppage of Sebastien Gauthier at LAMMQ 1.  Now back to his winning ways, “The Black Hulk” has agreed to face stiff competition at Substance Caged Combat 2 on May 30. His opponent, Ray Lopez, has faced Andrei Arlovski and Chris Price during his career and went 1-1 in the process.   A win will see Stoute continuing his rise up the rankings.  Next fight: vs Ray Lopez at SCC 2 on May 30

10. Tanner Boser (5-0) – Previous Rank (NR) – Former Heavyweight Tanner Boser made his debut at 205 this year.  At Unified MMA 18, Boser choked out the tough Nick Campbell in the second round.  The win gave him a future shot at Unified’s vacant LHW title and a place in the Canadian Top 10. Next fight: TBD

Fighters who dropped out of Top 10 – Steve Bosse (was #2, retired), Nick Penner (was #4, retired), Peter Nolan (was #6, inactive), Adam McDonald (was #9),

Just out of Top 10:

  • Nick Campbell (5-5)
  • Adam MacDonald (3-1)
  • Jon Ganshorn (5-4)

Damn the LHW div has fallen on hard times. I’m pretty sure most of the guys on the list don’t really scare opponents.

Wouldnt mind seeing Cirkunov vs Hollet, Loiseau, Chemelli or Lewis. He seems to not want to take any fights to really see where he is at besides the Desilets fight.

    1. I am not a homosexual male. Not that there is anything wrong with being a homosexual male, I just am heterosexual. Some of the nicest people I have met are homosexual

    2. I do not partake in the usuage of cannabis. I do not do any drugs. Not that there is anything wrong with smoking cannabis, lots of smart people smoke weed.

    3. I dont think I’m an idiot. I have a average IQ and a university degree. However a university degree does not make you smart, some of the smartest guys I have met (millionaires with their own companies) do not have a high school diploma.

Sheldon walks around at like 190 lbs. He proved he can crush Middleweights on TUF Nations. I looked at this list and I honestly do not see one Canadian fighter on this list that can hang with Sheldon Westcott.

When Sheldon is crowned the UFC WW Champ, you will…………

    EAT YOUR WORDS!!!!!!

Anton Tokarchuk is 3-0 and fighting this Friday… I think he’d be a great candidate to take on Tanner Boser for the Unified Title with a win in that bout!
