WSOF Announces Canadian Welterweight Title Fight

WSOF Ford vs PowellThe World Series of Fighting has announced a tremendous main event to their February 21st card in Edmonton, Alberta.

Ryan Ford, ranked fourth in Canada at Welterweight, will take on the number ten ranked 170er Joel Powell in a fight for the WSOF Canada Welterweight title.   Not only are Ford and Powell two of Canada’s best but the two fighters are also two of Canada’s most aggressive, so fans should be excited by this explosive matchup between fighters who always look for a finish.

WSOF Canada’s Chief Operating Officer Darren Owen said fans should expect fireworks in Edmonton,

“This is a fight we’ve been wanting to give the fans for a long time. Powell was injured for his #1 contender fight vs Mike Hill and then Ford broke his arm in his title win over Hill. Now, finally, we can put this highly anticipated fight together. I think this has fight of the year written all over it. Both of these guys are extremely aggressive and exciting to watch. I expect an all out war with the winner well deserving of becoming the first WSOF Canada Champion.”

Edmonton fans are well-acquainted with “The Real Deal” Ryan Ford  (21-4).  He is a hometown hero who submitted Mike Hill in the fifth round of their Aggression Fighting Championship fight in Edmonton on July 5.  In the fight, Ford dominated Hill to earn his fifth consecutive win despite suffering a broken arm early in the bout.

“The Real Deal” commented on the chance to win the title,

“February 21st I will be taking the WSOF Canadian belt home with me. My last fight with Hill I got the finish with a broken arm but this fight with Powell I will put on a better performance with a finish.”

Since winning the title, the AFC became WSOF Canada and the plans were to give AFC champions, like Ford, the WSOF titles.  However, Ford refuses to have a belt given to him saying “I earn my belts. I told them I’ll fight for it!! ”

Facing Ford for the WSOF title will be a fighter who has not lost in the Welterweight division since 2008.  Since that time, Joel Powell (7-3) has gone 6-1 with his sole loss being at Middleweight to Joe Doerksen.  In his last two bouts, Powell has knocked off two The Ultimate Fighter cast members – Mike Hill and George Lockhart.  With his win over Mike Hill, Powell was in line to face Ford earlier this year for the AFC title but had to pull out due to injury. On February 21st, he will finally get his shot at Ford and a belt.

The Ontario fighter commented on the fight and the shot at the title,

I’d like to thank WSOF Canada and Ryan Ford for giving me this opportunity. I’m really looking forward to this fight and was hoping it would finally happen. I’m really excited to show everyone what I can really do in the cage now that I’m 100 percent healthy and am able to go through a complete intense training camp with no injuries to hold me back.

With the Ford vs Powell five round title fight signed and promises of more big fights to be added to the card, fans should be excited for this World Series of Fighting Canada card!
