The Ultimate Fighter 18 Recap: Episode 12 – Gutierrez Misses Weight

By:

ultimate-fighter THUMBShow starts with Ronda Rousey coming over with her dog and former TUF fighter Manny Gamburyan to cook Armenian for the TUF house.

Anthony Gutierrez comes on camera and talks about Cody Bollinger missing weight and people thinking he had a free ride to the semi-finals as he did not have to fight. He understands their opinion, but says it is not his fault. Back at the house, Sarah Moras talks with Gamburyan about Gabe Ruediger missing weight on his season of The Ultimate Fighter 5. Gamburyan says if people can’t make weight, you should not have come on the show and instead should give some other fighter a chance.

Gutierrez talks to the camera about being one punch away from the Finale.

Rousey and Edmond Traverdyan agree to not corner either fighter Gutierrez and Davey Grant are both on their teams. Rousey is upset about this, but realizes it is the right decision.

Gutierrez asks Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Josh Hill to corner him. Grant will have Chris Beal and Jessica Rakoczy in his corner.

Coach’s Challenge
This year it is rock climbing. First coach to ring a bell at the top wins $10K and everyone on team gets $1500. Rousey wins and says “F&ck you, bitch!” at the top. She flips her off all the way down the wall. It was a tight race. Rousey says she “likes Miesha’s habit of always getting beaten by me.”

Josh Hill talks about Cody Bollinger, who missed weight earlier in the season, eating his Raisin Bran Crunch. Gutierrez, who is eating, says he can’t believe that happened. Hill, on camera, says he likes junk food too, but you got to make the weight or you won’t go anywhere in this sport.

Gutierrez says he eats whatever he wants. He says people are jealous that he is able to eat those things. He says he makes the weight, trains like a pro and fights like a pro.

Gutierrez started training MMA at age 15. He says he is going to stay active and keep moving in his fight with Grant. The fight will take place everywhere.

Traverdyan comes on screen saying they are giving neither fighter any strategy.

Gutierrez is weighing in at 150.5 lbs the day before fights. Rousey talks to Gutierrez and says he has to watch what he puts into his body. Gutierrez says he is “getting way too much heat” because his cardio is better than the other guys on the team. He wants people “to shut up and mind their own business.”

David Grant says he deejayed some of the top nightclubs in England as DJ Davey G. He was more of a party animal back then. Having kids gave him something to fight for and keep his focus. Grant is excited to get home to see his two boys and looking forward to the fight. He says it is very awkward to fight a teammate.

Gutierrez says he just has to avoid Grant’s big punches. Grant says he is stronger on the floor but he will probably stand. Jessamyn Duke says it is going to be a very good fight.

It is 9:15 and Gutierrez says he has eight pounds left to go. He goes on the scale and is 145.5. He has nine pounds to go in four hours. Grant is at 139.5. He goes on the scale and its 140.0.

Rousey comes to the gym and Gutierrez says he is 142. He asks Rousey not to hover over him. Rousey tells the camera that he cut the same way for his first fight to get into the house. She says he will be fine. He goes on the scale two hours before weigh-in and he is at 143.5. Baszler says he was drinking water in the hot tub the night before and drank a NOS on the way to the gym to cut weight.

Gutierrez tells Rousey that he needs to take a break. She tells him to suck it up for a couple hours. Gutierrez is running and saunaing. Edmond is pushing Gutierrez a lot.

Weigh-Ins: Davey Grant (135.5) vs Anthony Gutierrez (140). Gutierrez has an hour to lose the weight.

The team is talking about his weight while Gutierrez is crying in the sauna. He leaves the sauna and tells Ronda that he is done and is sorry.

Gamburyan tells him that he is an idiot and he does not deserve to be here. He tells Gutierrez that the UFC is too high a level for him. “You’re just going to go home and do nothing.”

Dana White comes to the gym. Gutierrez says he was undisciplined and did not act right over the past five days. He apologizes for his actions and says he will not live it down for a long time. White calls his miss “the craziest one ever” because he got a free pass to the semi-finals and was one fight away from the Finale. “Leave.” Davey Grant gets the bye to the Finale.

Grant is upset. He wanted to earn his way to the finals.

Rousey meets with White. She says she is going to make weight on Tuesday. She says she did not do the right job. White says he did not have any heart and she does not have to. He says Gutierrez had the easiest road to the Finale than anyone. The competition weeds out the weak. Gutierrez is the weak. White says he needs to fly home and get a real job. Make MMA his hobby.

Next fight: Raquel Pennington vs Jessica Rakoczy

I think she was trying to prove that just cuz he didn’t eat right and cut right he shod have still been able to make 135. But he cuts from 160 while she was cutting from 150 so it doesn’t make that much sense… I guess she thought it would prove a point?

And yea there’s no reason to miss weight. Training twice a day with no distractions, and any possible good you’d want.

Not to mention no six hours drive / flight to the fight. Pathetic is the only word to describe a guy who would rather have a mayo drenched sandwich instead of a opportunity of a life time.

I dunno how much is editing (probably a lot) but jesus man. Your body is your fucking paycheck. Keep an eye on the shit you put in it.

  11. Marv says:

@ Louis- yea I know the point she would be proving… But why?!? She’s the best in the world and she really has nothing to prove. You guys are professionals and are expected to act and train that way. A person can be well coached and trained 24/7 but if the individual doesn’t want it and doesn’t care then that should never be on the coaches.. Rhonda seems a little socially awkward though.

Okay, look, Ronda wanted to cut weight to show she cared. If she didn’t, you haters would STILL b*tch. Stfu.
