Unified MMA 17 – Recap – Shady Defends Lightweight Title

unified MMAUnified MMA returned to the Mirage Banquet Hall in Edmonton, Alberta with another sold out show tonight. In the main event Tim “Shady” Smith made his third successful defense of his Unified Lightweight Title, taking out Ryan Rother with a first round TKO and the co-main event saw Merrick Duggan use smothering top control to carry him to a dominant unanimous decision victory over Behrang Yousefi. Spencer Jebb and was awarded a trip to Las Vegas courtesy of Travel Guru’s for his Knockout of the fight performance and Unified MMA awarded a trip to Las Vegas for Submission of the Night winner Mark Drummond.

Tim Smith vs. Ryan Rother
Round 1: Smith lands a leg kick and Rother catches one to the body but eats a solid right in the process. They trade shots and Rother drops him with a hard shot. Rother drops into his guard and looks to land but gets caught in an armbar. Rother defends and Smith switches to a triangle. Smith lands elbows and tries to soften him up and finish the choke. Rother defends and escapes back to his feet. Smith drives in and gets a big double slam to guard. Smith goes body, body, head and continues the cycle until Rother gives his back. Smith slips the arm under the chin but lets go and unleashes a barrage of relentless punches that force referee John Braak to step in and call a halt to the bout giving Smith yet another successful title defense.

***Smith Defends Unified MMA Lightweight Title

Behrang Yousefi vs. Merrick Duggan
Round 1: Yousefi lands a leg kick and Duggan ties him up against the cage and looks for the guillotine. Yousefi escapes and Duggan gets a big slam to side control where he lands a shot. Yousefi replaces his half guard and Duggan lands a short elbow followed by some little shots. Duggan postures and connects with a right and more elbows. Duggan is landing just frequently enough to keep top position and connects with a couple solid punches. Duggan stands and drops one more big right before the round ends. Round 2: Duggan lands a big right and another hard slam to side control and a short elbow and Yousefi is able to replace his guard. Duggan lands and Yousefi looks for a triangle attempt before getting back to his feet. Duggan muscles him back to the mat and looks for a rear naked choke but lets go and moves to full mount. Duggan lands more elbows and gets back to his feet looking for a guillotine. Duggan with another big slam and Yousefi briefly works for a guillotine but Duggan pulls his head free. Referee John Braak pauses to replace the mouthguard of Yousefi and they restart. Duggan gets the single to guard and gets caught in a guillotine. Duggan elbows his way out and stands up to drop a right. They trade little shots and Yousefi tries to lock up a triangle but Duggan slams his way out and lands a few shots as time runs out. Round 3: Both men trade a flurry of heavy shots before Duggan again drags him to the mat and gets to guard. Yousefi looks for an armbar but Duggan frees himself and gets to half guard where he lands couple elbows. Yousefi is bloodied as Duggan continues to smother him and accumulate the damage. More elbows from Duggan and a pair of hard rights. The ten second clapper sounds and Duggan makes a push for the finish with a barrage of punches but the bells sounds. Merrick Duggan defeats Behrang Yousefi by Unanimous Decison (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Mike Scarcello vs. Spencer Jebb
Round 1: Scarcello lands a leg kick and a head kick that was partially blocked and tries to find his range with the jabs. They exchange shots in close and Scarcello lands a leg kick and a big left followed by another leg kick. Jebb connects with a body kick and Scarcello responds with a right and a few jabs. Jebb connects with a huge flurry that drops Scarcello to the mat. Jebb pounces and lands some big bombs that force referee Kyle Cardinal to step in and rescue Scarcello from any further damage.

Mark Drummond vs. Jemark Brady
Round 1: Brady rushes right in with a flying knee that knocks Drummond to his back but Drummond is able to weather the early onslaught and locks on a triangle choke. Drummond is in an awkward positions and can’t sink the choke and switches to an armbar but isn’t able to straighten it out. Brady escapes back to his feet but Drummond shoots in for a double against the cage but Brady is able to work back to his feet and looks for a guillotine. Brady lands a low blow and Drummond is given time to recover. On the restart Brady throws a wild combo and they tie up. Drummond gets separation and connects with a spinning kick to the midsection. They tie up again and Drummond attempts a guillotine prompting Brady to drive knees to the the thigh. Drummond responds with knees of his own and Brady continues and lands a few to the body. Round 2: Drummond lands a hard body kick and defends a takedown attempt from Brady. They tie up and trade knees the the legs. Referee John Braak separates them after a lull in the action. On the restart they trade shots before locking up against the cage again. Brady connects with a short elbow and defends a guillotine. Drummond lands a shot and drags him to the mat. Drummond looks to set up a d’arce choke and is able to sink it and force the tap.

Justin Nanaquawetung vs. Devon Neville
Nanaquawetung immediately lands a huge kick to the body and looks for a takedown but Neville lands on top. Nanaquawetung scrambles and ends up on top and lands shots before taking the back. Nanaquawetung drives a few hard knees into the body and Neville gets back to his feet. Nanaquawetung lands a few knees ti the midsection and Neville looks for a double but its defended. Nanaquawetung lands a big combo and drops Neville with a hard overhand right and follows up with shots on the ground. Neville recovers but Nanaquawetung continues to land big shots from half guard. Nanaquawetung postures up and connects with a pair of rights and some short elbows that prompt Neville to give up his back. Nanaquawetung sinks the rear naked choke without the hooks and forces the quick tap.

Dustin Greentree vs. Lee Darragh
Round 1: Greentree opens with a leg kick and the tie up as Darragh tries to drag him to the mat but can’t get him down. They trade shots and tie up again and Darragh looks for a guillotine. Greentree pulls his head free and lands shots against the cage before getting the throw to side control. Darragh works back to his feet but Greentree brings him right back down. Darragh again gets back to his feet but the same result as Greentree puts him right back down to side control. Darragh is finally able to get back to his feet and stay there and blocks a head kick. Darragh gets a takedown of his own to north/south and Greentree looks to shoot forward with a single. Darragh connects with some elbows to the body and looks for a guillotine. Greentree pulls his head out and lands a few shots as the round winds down. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 Greentree

Round 2: Greentree immediately connects with a combo and a leg kick before a brief tie up. Greentree secures the clinch and lands some uppercuts before connecting with a spinning back fist. Greentree again gets the clinch and lands a few more uppercuts. Darragh gets a single to half guard but Greentree is able to kick off the cage and flip over looking for a single of his own. Darragh throws up a triangle attempt and switches to an armbar. Greentree escapes and gets to side control before passing to mount. Greentree begins to rain down punches and hammerfists. Many of the shots are not getting through but Darragh is doing little else but covering up. Greentree screams at referee Kyle Cardinal to stop the fight and lands a few more shots and Cardinal steps in and calls a halt to the bout.

Bruno Marques vs. Nick Hrabec
Round 1: Hrabec lands a kick to the body and Marques responds with a jab and a thudding leg kick. They trade jabs and Marques lands another leg kick before they trade some shots. Marques with a leg kick and a solid right and Hrabec responds. Marques continues to land leg kicks and follows up with a nice combo. Hrabec sticks a couple jabs and Marques stuns him with a solid combo. Hrabec ties him up and gets the takedown but is caught in a guillotine. Hrabec pulls his head free and moves to north/south but Marques works back to his feet and eats a solid knee. Marques fights off the cage and they trade leg kicks. They paw at each other with some punches and exchange a few more leg kicks as the round comes.to an end. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 Marques

Round 2: They trade rights and a wild exchange ensues against the cage. They separate briefly before anther flurry of punches and Hrabec gets a double to side control. Hrabec stands and drops a right and takes full mount where he continues to drop heavy shots and forces the stoppage.

    Justin Nanaqeqetung is really good. No wonder Can Yallits backed out of the fight with him. Can realized the guy is legit and trains so he pulled out lol

    Jemark Brady needs to fight at 155. He weighed in a 162. I’m sure his buds from Arashi Do Red Deer can show him how to cut the weight o make 155 no problem.

    If he’s walking around 162 he should be fighting at 145 at least
