Bellator Lightweight Tourney Announced; Alessio Opponent Named
Today, Bellator MMA announced the official lineup and first round matchups for its Lightweight tournament. The tournament will start on September 27th in Portland’s Rose Garden Arena with all four quarterfinal fights held on the night’s main card.
One of the quarterfinal matchups features British Columbia’s John Alessio. One of the few Canadians with 50 MMA fights on his record, Alessio (34-16) will face Will Brooks (10-1) in his Bellator MMA debut. After leaving the UFC, Victoria fans will remember Alessio’s return to his hometown to fight Dave Mazany. Unfortunately, that fight quickly ended in a No Contest. Will Brooks fought in the last Bellator tournament where he advanced to the semi-finals before losing his first pro fight.
Also on the Portland card are former UFCers Marcus Davis (22-9) and Rich Clementi (45-22-1). The “Irish Hand Grenade” will face submission specialist Tiger Sarnavskiy (23-1), who is 2-1 in the Bellator cage.
Following a retirement and a diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea, Clementi is ready to resume his MMA career. Clementi will face Rob Sinclair (12-2) on September 27th.
The final opening round tournament bout will be former tournament finalist Saad Awad (14-5), who beat Canada’s Guillaume de Lorenzi last year, taking on Martin Stapleton (12-1), an English fighter whose sole loss was to Paul Sass five years ago.
