Unified MMA 16 – Weigh-In Results – Bill S-209 Forces Cancellation of Amateur Bouts

By:

Unified MMA ThumbMirage Banquet Hall will be rocking again tomorrow night with yet another sold out show. The main event features Mike Davis making the first defence of his Unified Flyweight Title against fast rising Michael Banin. In the co-main event will be a long awaited bout between Chase Maxwell and Jordan McKay. There will be no tickets available at the door so as always Top MMA News will have all your live coverage.

As of press time, the amateurs had not weighed in and ECSC Executive Director Pat Reid was not present for comment. Edmonton official Andy Social, who appeared to be running the weigh-ins, informed Top MMA News that due to the passing of bill S-209 which made amateur MMA illegal the ECSC would have no involvement in the amateur portion of the card but that the fights could go on as exhibition contests.

UPDATE: The amateur/exhibition fights have been cancelled.

CLARIFICATION: Andy Social was incorrectly listed as a member of the Edmonton Commission. Andy Social is not a member of the commission but is an Edmonton official. Andy Social does not speak for the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission.

    Great work mike Davis!

Did I miss something? Is all ammy mma illegal now? What changed with the rules? And yes I know ammy has never been legal in Edmonton.

  6. Cody Krahn says:

I feel for all the ammys who were supposed to throw down tomorrow. Nobody should have to sell tickets, put on gloves and fight in a cage for free anyways. Hopefully some of these guys can find other fights and now have their pro debuts while in shape and ready to fight.

  7. Cam Yallits says:

If Bill S-209 made amateur fighting illegal, then its done more to hurt than help already. All of Canada needs an amateur system with C-class, B-class, and A-class rules, with the next classes set of rules being closer to full professional rules, same as Muay Thai, and similiar to Bronze, Silver and Golden gloves boxing.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 5

  8. Cam Yallits says:

Id like to hear what Bill Mahood has to say about this, as well as being the consultant for the Edmonton Commission structuring a proper amateur system. Every other combat sport has an efficient amateur system, MMA here needs to get it together, quickly.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 7

  9. @Cam Yallits… Bill S-209 makes all combat amateur that are not part of the olympics illegal unless your province or municipality has a bylaw approving them.

Ammy and Pro Muay Thai are both illegal now if commissions uphold the letter of the law.

However, they may say Muay Thai is legal because it is “Stand Up MMA”.

  10. Marty Jannetty says:

How in the name of fuck did they not know this until AFTER the guys weighed in?

These guys trained hard sold tickets and some drove from out of town, only to have their fights canceled at the last minute?

Also, could they not have just fought pro? There’s plenty of “pro” fighters who have fought in Edmonton who look like they should not be fighting at all, these amateur guys who just got their fights canceled cant be any worse then them.

  11. please note that Top MMA News added a clarification to the article on Andy Social’s role with the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission.

    Thanks.

  12. Cody Rempel says:

@Marty… There may be one or two of the amateur fights that go pro if they’re able to get last minute CT Scans done to complete the meds they need to fight pro!

  13. Kellen Falt says:

Was Doty vs Haley not billed for 155? Did both miss weight? Also, heard Yellowbird missed weight by 6lbs, that true?

  14. Cody Rempel says:

I do believe Doty vs. Haley was initially a Lightweight fight but they agreed to change it to a Catchweight of 160lbs just prior to stepping on the scale.

  15. Chase Degenhardt says:

Completely agree with Marty. It would’ve been awful nice for these kids to have learned this BEFORE the freaking weigh ins. Sheer nonsense.

  16. Nobody can be blamed for that but the commission. They knew Amateur was illegal, but tolerated, yet still were going to go ahead with it.

S-209 has been in the works forever and was already voted in, yet they still were going to proceed.

I commend them for eventually pulling the bouts.

Now processes need to be put in place to properly regulate amateur with the correct bylaws.

Anyone else hear this (or something similar) whenever the ECSC is involved with anything?!?

“Um, the guy who was speaking on behalf of the people who couldn’t be here today doesn’t actually speak for us unless we 100% agree with what he said or what he said somehow reflects positively on us…”

Everyone knew Reid was running amateurs and it wasn’t legal or sanctioned. How convenient that snake was nowhere to be seen, and instead puts tire tracks on an official

  21. I usually like what you say, alandale, but didn’t you used to run an illegal commission?
