TJ Grant is ‘Ready to Go At It Again!’
To say it was a crazy weekend for TJ Grant would be an understatement. With beating Gray Maynard by TKO Saturday night at UFC 160 in Las Vegas, he was able to secure his spot as the number one contender for the Lightweight title against current champ Benson Henderson. Also, with a little help from former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, he was able to get the $50.0000 bonus for Knockout of the Night. Since then his phone has been ringing nonstop for countless interviews, but he did have time to talk with Top MMA News about the victory over the weekend.
“I was just happy with the result and in the best case scenario I would get knockout of the night,” says Grant. “Did I expect it to be in the 1st round, not really. You just prepare for the worst and hope for the best and that is basically what happened. I expected to take a lot of damage. I expected it to be a brutal war. I got in there and got out relatively quickly with hard work.”
While Grant has been enjoying a five fight winning streak since making the move to Lightweight in 2011, 2013 has been a special year thus far. Besides the win against Maynard, he was able to finish Matt Wiman by knockout in Chicago back in January. His best moment though has been outside the octagon as he and his fiancé welcomed their daughter Casey into the world in April. After his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, he went straight into the camera and said the fight was for Casey. While being a parent for the first time can be a challenge for anyone, especially coming close to a marquee matchup, it has given Grant a little extra bounce in his step.
“It been great but it has been a fast month,” says Grant. “Everything has been going really fast. Now I am just chilling, enjoying it as much as I can. I got another motivation and it has been a good feeling. The fight was a crazy night man! A lot of stuff happened. Getting to meet Iron Mike, going out there and fight. Someday though my daughter will be able to look back at that video and it will be pretty cool.”
Coming off the win over the weekend injury free, rumours have already been flying around as to when Grant will get his shot at Henderson. So far the fight has been linked to shows in Boston on August 17th and Toronto on September 21st. While people may speculate when this fight when go down, one thing for sure is that Grant will be ready when he gets the call.
“There is no timetable yet,” says Grant. “It’s really up to the UFC, I know they’re planning a show in Boston. I know about as much as you know. It is sounding like the Boston show is a strong possibility. I have made myself available and I am ready to go. Like I said, I am totally healthy, in great shape. I could go right back into training. Going into this fight I felt fresh. This fight did not break me down mentally like other fights. I never felt better and I am ready to go at it again.”
