Aggression Confirms Stacked AFC Edmonton Card; Ford Takes on Hill for Title

Ryan Ford

Ryan Ford

In the night’s main event, the best Canadian fighter not in the UFC, Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (20-4), will look to once again put on for his city with 13 pounds of gold at stake. Ford’s original opponent Joel Powell (7-3) who just narrowing edged out Michael Hill (5-1) with a split decision in last Sunday’s #1 contender fight has been forced to withdrawal with an injury. The Ultimate Fighter reality star Michael Hill was one round or one judge away form earning this fight himself and had let the AFC know if Powell wasn’t able to fight he would love the opportunity. After AFC matchmaker assessed the situation for potential opponents, only Michael Hill wanted to step up and fight Ford for the vacant AFC welterweight title.

The Co-main event will showcase the two best Canadian strikers in the Lightweight division as Shane Campbell (8-1) looks to defend his AFC lightweight title against #1 ranked Jesse Ronson who is riding a 7 fight winning streak. In addition, the long awaited return of Dwayne “DBomb” Lewis (12-8) will lock horns with UFC veteran and very dangerous Victor Valimaki (17-8) in a Light heavyweight tilt that will have title implications.

One of Edmonton’s favorite fighters former AFC champion Stephen “Big Bad” Beaumont (7-1) will look to take one step closer to regaining his belt when he welcomes AFC newcomer Brandt Dewsbery who boasts a very impressive (10-2-1) record.
5x UFC veterans Tim “The Thrashing Machine” Hague (14-7) and Kalib Starnes (13-8) will battle in what has been one of the most intriguing matchups announced. Hague returns to the AFC cage looking to use his power when he meets Starnes. While Starnes comes to the cage with a reignited fighting spirit, after a fight of the year candidate against Joe Doerksen (49-16) at AFC 11, and picking a big TKO victory against David Perron (5-2) last Sunday night at AFC 18.

In what could be dubbed the battle of big cats, Aggression Fighting Championship’s (AFC) top prospect KB “Bengal” Bhullar (3-0) looks to stay undefeated in what will be his toughest test to date in Derek “The Lion” Parker (3-1-1). Parker’s infamous hockey brawlers team the Jonquiere Marquis just captured the Can Am Cup Championship and Parker will now look for victory off the ice and in the cage.

Another fighter with endless potential Sheldon Westcott (8-1-1) will be in action as well taking on Alaska’s Thomas Ide (15-7).

In a battle of 2 undefeated fighters, Denny Houle (4-0) will try to keep his “0” intact as he faces off against Fort McMurray’s Teddy Ash (1-0). Capoeira sensation Marcus Vinicios (5-7) will look to showcase his acrobatic attacks against a tough Steve Dubeck (4-5).

When asked about the event AFC executive Moin Mirza had this to say, “I’m thrilled to be able to deliver an event like this to our amazing loyal fans.” AFC matchmaker Darren Owen added, “This is what the AFC is all about giving our fans the fights they actually want to see.”

The 19th installment for AFC will take place at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta on July 5, 2013. AFC will then head down to Calgary for AFC 20: Stampede Fight Night on July 12, 2013.

The fights the fans want to see?

Powell clearly dominated Hill not even close so don’t try to justify it now…

So Omic gets screwed out of a fight now classy!

Hill only fighter to accept fight ???? Who was offered this fight ? it is still a month and a half away and you looked for the duration of one whole day for a replacement?

How about let Omic fight Westcott and scratch the can from Alaska????

You lost Gunn to Xcessive so that now takes away the option of him vs Westcott or Omic

No offence AFC is still putting on some great fights I just hate when you try to justify junk when you had every opportunity to create some of the best match ups in Canada MMA

Still looking forward to Ronson and Campbell and Beamont vs Dewsberry

  3. Darren Owen says:

Powell won rounds 1 and 2 by wrestling and position not inflicting damage. Hill won the third round. If it was a 5 round fight it may have been Hill getting the win. We are still looking for a fight for Omic. Once the call from Powell came in that he was injured and couldn’t fight my first call was to Omic to see if he wanted the fight. He respectfully declined. I did not want to break up the Omic vs Hill fight initially so I started making the appropriate phone calls for who I believed would make sensible opponents for Ford and once that was complete make the decision based on who was available. Omic declined, Medler wanted the fight but still rehabbing an injury, MacGrath declined (baby due and too short notice), Milko declined, Alessio fighting a week before, Knippleberg declined. Garcia and Westcott train with Ford and would not fight him. Gunn and Machan already scheduled to fight July 20. Steele under WSOF contract. Dickson has expressed that he wants more experience before fighting Ford. I don’t just want to bring in random American to fight Ford. Hill wanted this fight badly when no one else did. After his fight with Powell he said for whatever reason if Powell can’t go I want it. He answered the bell give him props. It’s going to be an exciting fight, is he the most deserving of the fight? honestly no, but he’s going to come and fight like hell to piss off everyone in that arena.

  5. Don't Call Me Leon says:

With Omic & Gunn out of the question, it’s really too bad barring an injury and inactivity Medler couldn’t take this fight. He really does have the tools to hang with the top Welterweights!

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 4

  6. Joe Doerksen says:

Hill took a fight no one else was either willing, or able to take. I think he should be getting some props for that. And we’ve all seen underdogs surprise people before. Anyone has a chance.

Powell in my opinion is still deserving of a shot, when he’s all healed up.

Anyway, rather than bashing AFC for an injury, let’s give them and Hill some respect for making a tough situation workable.

  14. RickRoll says:

AFC puts together the fights people want to see and pay the fighters as good if not better than MFC. How does that make sense since MFC is on tv and AFC isn’t? MFC is not the “big show” and never will be until they pay people what they are worth. AFC > MFC

MFC has flat lined as a promotion and ticket sales in 2013 are on the decline. Garret Nybauken on a TV aired MMA event shows lack of quality.

AFC is rising and MFC is falling just facts of life you can only state it how you see it.

  18. @BigDaddyKane…. social media numbers are fake and not worth bragging about. They can be bought. Just like page views can be bought.

Another Canadian web site was bragging about their followers to mutual sponsors. We ran it through this tool:

It shows that @topmmanews has 65% Good followers. (about 3500 real followers out of the 5300 total followers). This is a good score.

Meanwhile, the competitor, mma sucka, has 7600 followers, however the tool shows that only 12% are GOOD while 77% are Fake and 11% Inactive. They really only have about 900 followers. Almost 80% are just fake twitter accounts!

    Want to buy twitter followers:

12,000 followers for 70 bucks! Sure, your twitter account looks good, but Top MMA News prefers to spend money on Canadian MMA content.

If people want to follow @TopMMANews to get Canadian MMA news, we really appreciate it. We promise to spam you about 3-4 times a day with great Canadian MMA news.

Ryan Ford has always been a great athlete with amazing explosiveness and serious predatory aggression.

He has added all kinds of skills to his game over the last 2 years.

Excited to see him perform again and excited to see this fearless Hill get in there and look to upset.

    Great fight guys.

  21. Cork Soaker says:

I don’t undertsand how Mark can actually think MFC is the best show in Canada? Well, I suppose he was crazy enough to think he was remotly close to the UFC for a while there.

MFC has 3 shows/ year in Edmonton, they’ve proimised many times they are going elsewhere, but never do. And he has even said that the Ontario show wasn’t really his.

AFC is doing multiple shows /per in Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary.

MFC has a very thin roster that changes daily with the more talented fighters bailing to fight elsewhere. Their contracts limit athletes ability’s to grow and make money. They promise guys multiple fights then let them sit on the shelf, if and when they try and get out the MFC tries their best to screw the athlete out of success (even when it’s a UFC deal).

AFC allows fighters to stay active, they have an extremely deep Canadian roster and contracts that don’t restrict the athletes ability to grow and make money. They realize that every fighter wants to make the UFC and they do their best to help make that happen with solid match making.

The only area MFC bests AFC is with the TV deal, and probably sponsor money (because of the TV deal).

Also, the AFC team is pretty fan friendly and are really great to the fighter and managers that work with them… I can’t say the same for Mark.

I can’t even think of who is on the MFC roster.

Also, I remeber Mark saying he’d never have losing records on his show, not even the undercard. Also, they cut some fighters for missing wiehgt (good ones too) and don’t cut others who miss.

What am I missing that makes MFC better than AFC?

  22. Who would want fake twitter followers? haha that’s pretty lame.

When i get home from work i should check how many of my followers are fake.

That would be a neat birthday present for somebody. HEY I bought you 12,000 twitter followers!

We appreciate the fact that you deem us as “competition” but to be honest we don’t see Top MMA News as such. That’s not a slag, but we see you as a MMA website that does a great job of covering MMA across the country. We are admirers of what you guys do. We never claim to be #1 at anything. Like you, we are some dudes who love the sport and we have seen our project of love take off. Obviously similar to you.

As for your Twitter comment, it doesn’t cost $70 to get twitter followers, it costs $5 and you can do it at Fiverr. I don’t recommend it. We did it to see how it works as we were doing a story on how fighters inflate their Twitter followers. We have never claimed to have that many twitter followers and have never used it to get advertising. To be honest we don’t really have too many problems generating ad revenue to keep our site afloat. So to try and slam us is a tad annoying, but we will take it as a compliment.

Like I said, Jeremy Brand and I like what you guys do, and actually use you as a reference from time to time. Just like you guys link to some of our stories. I would rather work with you guys than against you. It’s Canada. We both love the sport and there is no reason to take shots…eh.

Keep up the great work. We are more concerned in on our own content and getting better as a website than we are with how many twitter followers you have or who does a better job in covering Canadian MMA..FYI you guys are the best at that. Where Sucka tries to cover the sport across the globe with some personal bias towards Canada.

Thanks for letting me rant, but we were made aware of the comment and felt the need to respond.

Love what you guys do. :)

  29. mike kent says:

Ive only fought for AFC once but I can guarantee you when I fight again it will be with them ! they honestly put the fighters 1st and treated me like gold before and especially after even though I lost my fight which means a lot , Mark has a habit of once a fighter under performs or takes a loss or two shitting all over them. Bottom line is if you want to fight all over the country and stay busy with multiple shows to pick from you should chose AFC . If you want to fight in Edmonton on shows every three to four months and risk getting shelved for years then MFC is probably your best bet

@Seamo, I was alos there, Powell definitly handled Hill for the first two rounds. I gave Hill the 3rd, but he wasn’t really close to finishing the fight IMO.

Maybe if it went another two rounds Hill would have come back for the win, but if it was scheduled for 5, Powell might have had a different game plan as well.

  32. Seamo says:

@ Jamie Locke well maybe Hill did more than you think looks like Powell isn’t fighting cause he is hurt. Hmmm or maybe he’s to scared to fight Ford? Just saying !
