It has been a busy year so far for Extreme Cage Combat as they held there third event in the last four months as Rise of the Champions took place May 11 in the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Room. The near sellout crowd were treated to some of the top fighters in the country as well as some up and comers who had some fantastic finishes to start the show. One fight did not happen as Ken MacLeod withdrew from his fight against Jon Williams after he had slipped in the shower earlier in the day. Here is how the night’s action went down.

Here is the play-by-play:

Mike Kent vs. Elias Theodorou
Round 1
Theodorou looks for a leg kick to starts things out. Kent moves in but Theodorou is able to get the takedown on Kent. Kent is trying to push him off but Theodorou is looking for a choke. Theodorou is working on top as Kent tries to get back up on his feet but Theodorou hits him with a knee to keep him down. Kent is able to get up but Theodorou has him in the clinch. He hits Kent with a few knees and gets him back down. Theodorou works some ground and pound but he stands up on his feet. Theodorou looks to take his back and gets one hand wrapped around as he tries to hooks his legs around Kent’s abdomen. Kent turns to his side and it seems that Kent has popped something and he taps.
Elias Theodorou wins via submission (injury) at 1:54 of the 1st round
Elias Theodorou is now the ECC Middleweight Champion

Tristan Johnson vs. Jesse Gross
Round 1
The match begins when Johnson throws a head kick but Gross is able to block it off. Gross looks to move in but Johnson hits him with a jab. Gross answers back as he goes in and secures the takedown and moves over into side control. Gross is moving around trying to get a better position as Johnson looks for an opening to get back up. Gross is sneaking in a few shots but isn’t getting much to start. Johnson turns on his side but Gross is able to use his strength to keep him down. Johnson gets his legs around his back and tries to grab his arm but can’t hold on. Gross is standing on his feet as he gets a few jabs in there. Johnson gets a push off and is back on one foot. Gross is working on top trying to keep him down as he hits with some punches to the body. Gross is up now trying to get a hold of his feet but he goes back down as he tries to pass guard. He gets Johnson back down on his back. Gross works on some ground and pound and he stands back up to continue to work with the punches to end the round.

Round 2
Round 2 looks more like a boxing match to start things out as both guys circle around looking to work the jab. Gross then moves in and pushes Johnson against the cage. Johnson is able to switch and gain control and hit him with a few knees. Gross circles around and both men are in the clinch. Gross hits with a knee and then tries for a single leg. He lets go of that and looks for the double. He lets go of that and tries for the single leg again and is able to get him down. Gross is on top trying to pass guard as he works in some elbows as Johnson tries to use his feet to push him off. Gross continues to work on top on his ground and pound with a mix of elbows to the head and shots to the body. After some time Gross stands up on his feet as he looks to get a better position. Johnson gets a burst of energy to get up but Gross moves in like a linebacker and tackles him back down. Johnson looks to get back up and is up on both feet but Gross pins him back down and continues to work on the ground and pound. Gross gets one big shot to the chin and a few elbows to the head to end the round.

Round 3
Gross works the jab to start things out but Johnson throws a front kick that gets Gross right on the chin. Gross then looks for the takedown and gets it. Gross is contempt to work on his ground and pound as he opens a cut on Johnson right eye. Johnson gets back up on one foot and gets up and pins him against the cage. Johnson then goes for the takedown and is able to get it but Gross is able to get back up quick and get Johnson in the clinch against the cage. Gross then looks to sweep the leg for the takedown but Johnson is able to block it. Gross looks to pick him up but can’t get him down. Gross then looks for the takedown but Johnson is able to connect with a few punches and an elbow to the head. Gross eventually is able to pick him up and get him down on the mat. Gross is now in side control as he works on his ground and pound. This continues for a bit until Johnson moves close enough to the cage and try and push off with his feet. Gross is able to keep him down but Johnson moves around and has a hold of Gross’s arm. Johnson looks to see if he can pull out a last second arm bar but the horn sounds.

Jesse Gross wins the match via decision 30-27 across the board

Pat Carroll vs. Zach Quinlan
Round 1
Quinlan looks to end things quick with a head kick but Carroll is able to block it. Carroll then moves in and pins him against the cage, looking for the takedown. Quinlan grabs a hold of his head but Carroll is able to take him down. Carroll is now moving into side control as he tries to get his head free. Carroll gets his head free and works in some elbows. Not much is happening until Carroll moves around and gets full mount. Carroll then works on his ground and pound but Quinlan is able to cover himself up and block most of the punches. Carroll is now trying to separate his arms but Quinlan is able to reverse and now gets on top. Carroll grabs a hold of an arm and looks to extend it for the arm bar. He has it sinked in but Quinlan refuses to tap. Quinlan is able to get out and is not on top. Carroll looks to grab the arm again but Quinlan is working on top trying to pass guard. Carroll is trying to scout over to the cage. Quinlan works in some body shots to end the round.

Round 2
Quinlan looks for a front kick to start the second round but Carroll gets a hold of him and pushes him against the cage. Quinlan looks for the leg sweep but Carroll blocks it. Carroll then looks for the takedown and is able to get it. Carroll is on top working in side control but not much is happening. Carroll is moving around trying to get a hold of his arm. Carroll hits with a big elbow and moves around again as he is able to work in the arm triangle choke and get the submission

Mortezza Shahi vs. Josh Walker
Round 1
Shahi looks for the clinch to starts things out but Walker looks for the takedown but gets him against the cage. Walker is grinding him along the cage as he looks for the leg sweep to take him down. Shahi hits him with a big knee and is able to get him down. Shahi is on top hitting with some punches but Walker has a hold of one of his legs trying to secure a heel hook. Shahi goes down on one knee to get his leg free and pass guard but is having trouble. He is able to work the odd punch in but not much is happening. Walker is on his back as he tries to grab an arm but is able to land a good elbow. Shahi is able to get his arm loose as Walker tries to turn to his side. Shahi turns as he gets back up, as does Walker. Walker pushes him and gets him against the cage but Shahi is able to work the clinch and hit with some knees. Shahi breaks it off as he looks to get him with some leg kicks. Walker moves in for a haymaker but just misses the chin of Shahi. Shahi gets back in the clinch but Walker gets a few jabs in. Shahi lets go as both men circle the cage. Walker goes in for a big swing but Shahi hits with a couple of jabs. Shahi goes back to the clinch and hits with some knees. Shahi then hits with a huge knee that sends Walker down to the mat. Referee Cyril Desjardins does not stop it so Shahi hits with some punches until Desjardins steps in. Bad call by the ref.

Tyler Lee vs. Brain Johnson
Round 1
Both fighters touch gloves to start until Lee looks for the kick to follow it up with a superman punch but misses. Lee then looks for the takedown but Johnson slips but gets back up quick. Johnson gets a hold Lee and is able to get him for a takedown along the cage. Johnson is on top as Lee uses his feet to push off the cage but he can’t get up. Johnson is in side control but is not doing much. Johnson is able move into full guard as Lee turns to his side. Johnson gets a hold of his head but Lee is able to use this to get back up and gain top position. Lee is now in side control as both fighters circle around of the ground. Lee tries to put him in a crucifix but Johnson is able to get out and Johnson is on his feet. Lee elects to stay on his back as Johnson throws some kicks looking to find an opening to get back on top. Johnson goes back down but Lee is able to get back up on his knees. Lee is able to get on top but Johnson gets a hold of his head for a choke. Both fighters get up but Johnson looks to take his back. Lee is able to counter with a single leg takedown. Lee is now on top trying to pass guard as he hits with shot to the body. Johnson grabs his head to prevent Lee from doing any damage. Lee breaks him off and continues to work the ground and pound that has open a cut over Johnson’s right eye. Lee continues to work the ground and pound as the doctor warns referee Hubert Earle to watch the cut on Johnson. Lee continues with the shots as Johnson taps before the round ends.
Tyler Lee wins the fight via submission (strikes) at 4:51 in the 1st round

Robin Smith vs. Dylan Mercer
Round 1
Mercer sets up a jab to starts things out as he looks for the takedown. He is unable to take him down but sneaks a few punches in there. Mercer looks for the single leg but let’s go as Smith hits with some knee strikes. Mercer then looks for the double leg but Smith continues to hit with some knees. Both fighters are circling in the clinch with each guy trying to get the advantage. Smith hits with some more knees and gets Mercer against the cage. Mercer is still looking for the takedown trying for a double leg and finally gets it. Mercer gets in side control and hits with some knees before he decides to stand back up. Mercer goes back on top to work on some ground and pound as he tries to pass guard. Smith is able to get up on his knees but eats a few knee shots from Mercer in the process. Smith is up and gets Mercer against the cage but Mercer is able to take him back down. Mercer works in some elbows and then looks to sink in a choke. Smith tries to get back up but this gives Mercer the chance to sink in the Anaconda choke. He has it in and holds on for a few seconds until Smith taps.
Dylan Mercer wins the match via submission (Anaconda choke) at 2:32 in the 1st round

Chad Symonds vs. Matt Heim
Round 1
Symonds starts the match with his hands a little low for protection as Heim looks to go for a jab. Heim is trying to take the center of the cage and push Symonds off with a jab but he cannot hit. Symonds looks to go in but holds off. Symonds then moves in again and is able to connect with a right hand to the gut of Heim. Heim then tries for a superman punch that misses in which Symonds gets a hold of his head but let’s go. Both fighters circle around until Symonds hits Heim with a knee that rocks him a little bit. He has Heim against the cage as he looks to take his back. He slowly gets Heim down on one knee looking for the choke but let’s go and starts hitting him with some knees to the body. Symonds continues with the knees and starts throwing some punches. He hits with a few more knee shots and the ref stops the fight.
