Dana White Announces TJ Grant/Maynard Winner to Fight for UFC Lightweight Title

TJ Grant vs Ricardo Almeida

TJ Grant is Canada’s #1 Lightweight

Dana White announced that the winner of the UFC 160 bout between Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia’s TJ Grant and Gray Maynard will be next in line to fight Benson Henderson for the UFC Lightweight title.

TJ Grant (20-5) has been undefeated as a UFC Lightweight. Since making the drop from 170, Grant has gone 4-0 with wins over Shane Roller, Carlo Prater, Evan Dunham, and Matt Wiman. In his last UFC fight, Grant defeated Wiman with elbow strikes late in the first round.

Maynard will be fighting for his third shot at the UFC title. At UFC 125, Maynard fought Frankie Edgar to a draw and then lost to Edgar at UFC 136. Maynard is coming off an injury and will have been out of the Octagon for nearly a year.

Benson Henderson will be waiting for the winner as he just defended his title for the third time with a split decision win over Gilbert Melendez.

It would be great to see a Canadian fight for a title, other than GSP dominating 170 for the past while. What other Canadians have fought for a UFC title? I know Loiseau got beat up by Franklin and Newton won the WW first…is that it? If you want, you could include Harold Howard winning the old school UFC tournament by default.

    Good luck T.J Grant!

Maynards a serious threat and no joke but given the way t.j has fought lately I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s wearing the strap in 2013 . He just improves so much each fight . Unreal !

  13. Oh the good ol days.

How can we forget Hackney clubbing Emannuel Yarborough for what seemed like minutes. Gee, no wonder he broke his hand in that fight.

Shamrock won his 2 bouts, against Leninger and Mitchell I think? then had to pull out.

Howard KO’d Roland Payne and then had a bye against Gracie, then lost to Jennum, who had 1 fight that night winning the tourney.

This was the worse tourney out of all of them.

    Correct Idol, Jennum replaced Ken.
