Canadian Heavyweight Rankings – April 2013

By:

There is a new king of the Canadian Heavyweights and his name is Smealinho Rama.

Here is the Top 5:

Official Canadian Heavyweight Rankings

1. Smealinho Rama (6-0) – Previous Rank (2) – The Prince has been coronated and is now the King! Smealinho Rama exploded onto the MMA scene in 2012 and has, incredibly, made it to the top of the Canadian Heavyweight pack in just over a year.  Rama’s latest victim was the former #1 Canadian Heavyweight Mike Hackert.  Rama dispatched Hackert in the first round – just like he did with every previous opponent.  Will he do the same to Chris Barnett at MFC 37?  Next fight: vs Chris Barnett at MFC 37 on May 10

2. Mike Hackert (6-2) – Previous Rank (1) – “The Honey Badger” shocked the Canadian MMA scene giving the Thrashing Machine a thrashing to claim the #1 spot in 2012.  However, Mike Hackert received a taste of his own medicine from Smealinho Rama who knocked him off his top perch on February 15.  Hackert is still the clear number two Heavyweight in Canada, although it is unclear who he will fight next.  Next fight: TBD

3. Tim Hague (14-7) – Previous Rank (3) – After losing to Hackert for the second consecutive time, The Thrashing Machine called it a career.  However, recently Tim Hague has been calling out all kinds of opponents including Jeff Monson, Frank Mir, and Ryan Fortin. Top MMA News is happy that there is fight left in Hague and we cannot wait to see him in the cage again!  Next fight: TBD

4. Ryan Fortin (6-4) – Previous Rank (4)Ryan Fortin took on the rising prospect Smealinho Rama at MFC 35 after a year off from the sport.  Rama’s speed on the ground was just too much for Fortin as Rama went from sub to sub before sinking in the Rear Naked Choke.  Hopefully, Fortin can right his ship in his next fight for the Fivestar Heavyweight title. Next fight: vs Karl Erickson at Fivestar Fight League 6 on May 10

5. Paul Cheng (3-1) – Previous Rank (NR) – Former CFL football player Paul Cheng sneaks into fifth spot as Peter Nolan has not had a Heavyweight fight in the past year.  In his last fight in November 2012, Cheng went into Calgary and laid out favorite Ryan Hunter in front of his hometown fans.  Hopefully, fans see Cheng return at AFC 18 in Victoria this May and Cheng continues to climb the Heavyweight ladder. Next fight: TBD

Fighters who dropped out of the Top 5: Peter Nolan (was 5th, inactive as Heavyweight for one year)

Outside the Top 5
Craig Hudson (2-3)
Ryan Hunter (3-1)
Jordan Tracey (3-2) – Next fight: vs Gary Peck at Fivestar Fight League 6 on May 10

  4. Shane BTP Mountney says:

He would fight Hackert anyday…BOO BOO…but we are trying to work on a match up with Cheng in AFC…we expressed our interest and so have they…

  6. Bobby Karimi says:

Wardog vs Cheng or Hunter would be fun.

I’ve only seen Tracey fight once, and that was against Rama, so not too sure about how good he is.

  7. J. Tyler says:

How can Hudson be considered for this list? He’s never beaten anybody relevant and other than fighting a couple tough guys, he’s done nothing. If these are the credentials needed, than you can put bobby kalmakoff or lee mein on that list. I realize there are not many top known HW’s but putting Hudson there, is being very generous and inaccurate. There are dozens of other fighters who actually belong there

  8. Blah says:

Who do you guys want to see Hackert fight now?? I’m guessing they are going to have to bring in somebody from the U.S to fight him like theyre doing for Rama? Really no other Canadian HWs for him to fight.

  9. The Imp says:

Hudson sucks, but so does everyone on this list below Hackert. I don’t think J.Tyler knows anything about MMA. Please name 24 heavy weights who actually belong there instead of Hudson.

  10. LoL says:

They only do a top 5 for the Heavies because there are so little HW’s.
It does say outside of the top 5,.I’m guessing in no particular order.
But i can see how Hudson could be on that list, he faught 5 times in a yr span thats more than anyone on that list other than Rama.
He fought Rama and Hague on short notice, no 1 and 3 on that list, no one else did.
Both is victories are first rd KO’s abd he always brings it regardless if outcome.
Its my opinion That he fight Hunter or Cheng or both than Fortin, And even throw Jordan Tracey in the mix, Forget about Hague.he already said no to a rematch with Hudson, and I thibk a fight with Hackert would be good also, Than a rematch with Rama.
From what i understand from reading the posts is that Hudson is having a Hard time getting guys to accept fights, either the say no because Hudson is Dangerous and his record isnt very reflective so no one wants to take the chance of losing to Him. Or they use the excuse Hague did the want to fight someone with a bigger name, either way i would hope someone soon steps up to fight Him.
The way i see it if he fights anyone less on this list he get ragged on for fighting a can and if no one on this list fights him he’ll probably stay inactive which for me would suck, cause i like watching his fights win or lose!

  12. @J Tyler…maybe you could get Ilya Woronowski to fight again so we can rank him!

  13. Jerobe says:

Misha needs to jump weight and roll every single onecof these guys on this list. Misha could, oh he could. Startting with the great Tim Hague who wanted to come out of retirement to fight Bobby K. Come on Tim fight a real fighter. We all know what happens when u try…..

  14. A lot of LHWs, like Peter Nolan, would rank at HWs if they had qualifying fights.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

  15. LoL says:

I agree. Although from what ive seen Mischa is great on the ground but needs work on his striking, that being said i would think he could easily make a run at the AFC LHW Title,if the AFC would have him!

  16. LoL says:

The more i think about it, the more i like a fight between Hudson and Hackert.
It’s a good comeback fight for Hackert, to try and get over the loss to Rama, but its also a dangerous fight cause Hudson has KO power in his hands and feet.
On the other side of the coin its a good test like BOO BOO said to see where Hudson stands.
IMO though Hackerts management or Hackert wouldn’t take the chance on Fighting Hudson, probably the same reason why Hudson is finding it Hard to get fights, its not a easy win or goid fight for any of these guys. Still would like to see it!

  17. lol says:

Peter Nolan steamrolled Paul Cheng when they fought.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1

  18. Yep..that is why Peter Nolan was on this list the last few times. He did not qualify this time.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  19. J.T says:

Peter Nolan missed the ranking by 1 day. Would any of them fight Ilya , Keith? Even Hollett backed out of that fight. Who care what the haters think of Misha C, fact is other them the canadian UFC LHW’s, every other Canada l ‘top ten’ has turned down that fight. Why do think that is? If I know nothing, than thy an insult to how misguided everyone else is

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 3

  20. @J.T… I have no idea if they would fight Ilya. I would guess that Hackert would if a promoter was willing to fly someone in. Rama shouldn’t as he needs to fight bigger names now. Hudson says he would fight anyone.

As for Misha, he would make this HW list if he fought at HW.

I disagree that there are dozens of fighters who have fought in the past year at HW who should be on this list over Hudson.

It is unfortunate that guys cannot get fights. We do not rank based on fighters turning down other fighters. We only rank on fight outcomes.

  23. BOOBOO says:

I PERSONALLY CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT 2013 HAS IN STORE FOR THE WARDOG . FULL CAMPS WITH PROPER MNGMNT AND NO TAKERS NOW – WHAT B.S. THIS GUY FOUGHT 5 TIMES IN 1 YEAR AND HELPED OUT 2 OR 3 PROMOTOINS ON SHORT NOTICE FIGHTS TO FIGHT THE BEST CANADA HAS TO OFFER , THE LEAST SOMEONE CAN DO IS GIVE THIS GUY A FIGHT ON 6 TO 8 WEEKS NOTICE. HE DIDNT HAVE TO BEG LAST YEAR AND NOW AT 2-3 HE IMO EVEN HAGUE THINKS BOBBY K IS A BETTER FIGHT FOR HIM , SEEMS LIKE NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE A CHANCE ON A GUY WHOM GAVE EVERYONE A CHANCE LAST YEAR . .WHAT BULL SHIT !!

ITS PRETTY SAD WHEN THE ONLY GUY WHO WILL FIGHT HIM IS BODWELL lol . THE HWT DIVISION IS VERY WEEK RIGHT NOW EXCEPT FOR RAMA AND HACKERT AND CRAIG WOULD MAKE A STATMENT WITH HACKERT ON A FULL CAMP.

I CANT BELIEVE IM SAYING THIS , BUT ARE THE HWTS IN CANADA SCARED OF THE WARDOG OR WHAT ?

FUCK SOMEONE FIGHT EM AND IM SURE WOODY , ALEX AND SHANE ARE GONNA MAKE IT HAPPEN SOON , I HOPE.

Stupid question. I take that back. The good news is i’m sure Craig will give Ryan a bit of a better fight than Karl.

  31. Shane BTP Mountney says:

From what i understand Cameron…Erickson got hurt… since Hague called out Fortin At Kotc last week…tgey offered it to Hague…Hague declined they offered it to Craig…i was in talks with Fivestar for this card for a mth now and we knew if any of the Heavies pulled out due to injury we would get a call…didnt expect it for the title…so that is just a bonus!

  32. Vlad says:

That is a great fight for the fans and for both fighters. Good luck Craig and Shane, very happy for both of you brothers. Fortin is a tough fight for anyone, he is not a joke. I wish both fighters luck , I think it is gonna be very interesting battle of will and determination. See you soon Craig :)
