CFL’s Most Outstanding Player To Fight in April

Chad OwensToronto Argonauts returner/receiver Chad Owens will make his amateur MMA debut in Hawaii on April 6th, according to reports.  His opponent on the Na Koa III card will be another MMA rookie Junya Tevaga.

Owens will follow in the footsteps of Paul Cheng, Derek Medler, and Adam Braidwood as CFL players who have fought MMA fights.  There is one difference, however, Owens is coming off a 2012 season where he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player and his team won the Grey Cup.

Will a broken hand affect his ability to catch passes or make training camp are questions that must concern Argonaut management, however they have stated Owens’ contract does not preclude him from extreme sports like Mixed Martial Arts.

The Hawaiian born Owens holds the Canadian Football League record for most combined yards in a season with 3,863.  Last season, he led the league with 94 catches for 1,328 yards.

Owens won his fight by unanimous decision. He bloodied up his opponent pretty good even though he was gassed in the 1st round.
