Joel Powell has Georgia (and George Lockhart) on His Mind
Joel Powell was originally scheduled to take on Marcus Vinicios (5-7) at AFC 15 this week, but Vinicios pulled out with an injury. After AFC promoters were unable to find the Ontario native a short notice opponent, Powell was forced to look elsewhere. Powell originally agreed to fight five time UFC vet Roan Carneiro at Wild Bill’s, but 24 hours later Carneiro pulled out stating that he wanted to fight in May instead. Powell was offered a fight with George Lockhart and immediately accepted.
Powell has become one of the top Canadian Welterweights over the past two years with wins over the highly regarded Brandt Dewsbery, Advin Omic, and Andrew Buckland. Powell has won four out of his last five fights with an aggressive, fan-friendly style. His sole loss came in a Fight of the Year performance in his Middleweight debut against Joe Doerksen.
Powell’s Wild Bill’s Fight Night opponent will be The Ultimate Fighter 16 cast member George Lockhart. On TUF 16, Lockhart lost his bout against Bristol Marunde on the first episode. Lockhart is also a former Marine who once held the job of instructor trainer at the Martial Arts Center of Excellence in Quantico, Virginia. In his last fight, Lockhart defeated Jarome Hatch by Unanimous Decision. Thirteen months will have elapsed since that bout and his fight with Joel Powell.
