ECC 16 Play-by-Play
A small but decent crowd came out to Exhibition Park for ECC as they held there second event in less than two months in Halifax. Extreme Cage Combat 16 was a short night as only two fights made it past the first round and only one going the full three. While the fights may have been short, fans were treated to some fantastic finishes.
Here is how the night fights were broken down.

Ricky Goodall vs. Iraj Hadin
Both fighters touch gloves to begin. Goodall looks to use the jab but doesn’t hit. Goodall then misses on a front kick. Hadin then moves in and lands some body shots but Goodall is able to land a shot to the head. Goodall then tries for a roundhouse that does not hit. Hadin then throws a few legs kicks but Goodall gets one himself. Hadin is able to take Goodall down. Goodall looks to grab his arm but Hadin is able to move into side control. Hadin is on top and lands a knee to the head. Goodall gets a burst of energy and is able to get on his knees. Hadin then looks for the guillotine and looks to get on top. Goodall is able to get back on his feet but Hadin still has the choke in. Hadin lets it go and Goodall is able to stand up. Goodall gets him in the clinch and lands a couple of knees. Both guys exchange knee strikes until Goodall gets him against the cage. Goodall breaks it and lands a good head kick. Hadin lands some leg kicks while Goodall tries for another roundhouse. Hadin goes in and gets a good combination with Goodall landing a few jabs before Hadin gets his back. Goodall then lands with a head kick when Hadin charges in with a jab. Hadin goes back to the leg kicks and when Hadin gets him close to the cage, Goodall is able to catch one of them. He lets go and both fighters are against the cage. Hadin goes back to the leg kicks that are working for him but Goodall misses with an uppercut but lands the jab. Hadin continues with the leg kicks but both men have a big exchange. Hadin then goes in for the single leg takedown and is able to get him down. Hadin is on top trying to get in side control as the round ends.

Hadin looks to use the legs kicks to start round two but then goes for the single leg takedown and gets it. Goodall is sitting up trying to get back on his feet while Hadin tries to stack him against the cage. Hadin is trying to pass guard but he is able to land some elbows. Goodall uses a burst of energy to get back on his knees. He looks for the single leg takedown and is able to get it. He pushes Hadin down on his back and then is able to get his back. Goodall is looking for the rear naked choke and uses some ground and pound to help and try to sink it in. Goodall is still on his back for a bit of time trying to sink the choke until Hadin is able to revers and get on top. Goodall still has his legs wrapped around his back but Goodall lets go as he looks to get back on his feet. Hadin puts him down and gets into side control. Goodall turns to his side when Hadin looks for the arm bar but Goodall is able to get back on his feet. Both guys work the jab until Goodall tries for a couple of kicks. Hadin looks for the takedown but Goodall is able to stuff it so Hadin has him against the cage. Goodall is able to turn him around and land a few knees. Goodall then lands a few elbows and looks to get his back. Both guys are leaning against the side of the cage until both fighters let go. Both guys each land a leg kick as the round ends.

Both fighters high five each other to begin the final round. Hadin is able to use the jab to starts things out. Both fighters go in for an exchange and then Goodall gets him with the jab. Hadin is able to get a shot to the body and then a leg kick. Goodall comes back with a couple of leg kicks until Hadin looks for a superman punch but is unable to land it. Hadin then looks for a front kick that can’t connect. Hadin then looks for the takedown but can only get Goodall against the cage. Hadin then looks to slam Goodall but he defends it the first time. Hadin goes for it again and gets it and moves into side control. Hadin works some ground and pound while Goodall tries to turn on his side and get back up. This goes on for a bit of time until Goodall gets back on his feet and gets on top. Hadin is able to get back up quickly so Goodall looks to take his back. Goodall looks for the slam but Hadin blocks it. Hadin then gets a hold of his arm looking for a kumara attempt. Both fighters battle along the cage until each guy lands a right hand. Hadin goes back to the leg kicks until he is able to go in and get the takedown. Hadin is in side control moving around trying to pass guard but he does land some elbows. Hadin gets on his feet while Goodall tries to push him off so Hadin goes back down. Hadin lands a few more shots on the ground as the fight is over.

The three judges score it 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Iraj Hadin for the decision victory
Mike Malott vs. Jon Williams
Malott goes in with a leg kick to start things out. Malott then goes in for a flying knee that knocks Williams down. Malott gets a few punches while Williams is down before the ref stops the fight.

Ryan Connor vs. Rick Doyle
Doyle is excited for the fight as he is getting prepped in his cowboy hat and fist bumping to Nickelback. Doyle starts the fight by charging in but Connor is able to get him in the clinch. Connor looks for the leg sweep but can’t get it so he pushes him against the cage. Connor works a mix of jabs and knees but Doyle is able to defend most of the hits off. Doyle is able to land the odd jab but Connor is able to keep him pinned along the cage. Connor looks to get a hold of his arm but let’s go and continues with the jab. Doyle gets a hold of his head but Connor comes back with a few knees strikes. Doyle is able to push him off but Connor pushes him back against the cage and keeps working the clinch. This continues for a bit of time until Connor looks to takes his back but to no avail. Connor continues to work him along the cage and land multiple knee strikes. Connor then lands an elbow to the face when Doyle looks to turn him around but Connor pins him back against the cage. Doyle is able to land a punch but Connor keeps him against the cage as the round ends.

Connor starts off round two by going in for a punching combination before he is able to get Doyle in the clinch and put him against the cage. Connor keeps him pinned along the cage and uses some dirty boxing while landing some knees. After a few seconds Connor goes for the single leg and gets him down. Doyle has a hold of his head at 1st but can’t really hold on. Connor moves into side control while Doyle uses his feet to push off the cage and try to get back up. The move is costly for Doyle as Connor uses the opportunity to pass guard and gain full mouth. Connor works some ground and pound but Doyle is able to defend most of the shots. Doyle then is able to land a punch or two off his back. He uses his legs to try and get up but Connor is proving to be too strong. Connor goes back to using his ground and pound while Doyle is trying to do whatever he can to defend it. Connor is landing too many shots and the ref to call the fight.

Andrew Quigley vs. Boyd Sharpe
Both fighters move to the center of the cage where Sharpe grabs a hold of him and works the clinch with some knees but Quigley answers back with some of his own. Sharpe gets him against the cage where he continues to work with the knee strikes. Quigley is able to turn him around and land a few knee strikes himself. Quigley then is able to get a leg sweep on Sharpe but Sharpe is able to get back up. Quigley then hits with a couple of left punches until Sharpe tries for a spinning back fist. Sharpe is able to push him against the cage and then slam Quigley down. Sharpe is on top now and pushes Quigley against the cage. Sharpe is standing on his feet when Quigley gets a hold of his arm. He can’t keep a hold of it and Sharpe answers with a big right. Quigley gets back on his feet when Sharpe attempts a guillotine. Sharpe tries for a sweep that doesn’t work but he does get a knee shot in there to push Quigley against the cage. Sharpe lets go of the choke when Quigley turns to get his back but Sharpe is able to get out. Both fighters are back to the center when Sharpe goes in for the clinch and he is able to get another slam on Quigley. Sharpe stands on his feet and moves into a north south position. Quigley gets a hold of his arm again but Sharpe is able to use the leverage for another body slam. Sharpe is now working some ground and pound and gets full mouth. Sharpe gets back on his feet and moves to side control on his back. Quigley is able to get back on his feet but Sharpe is able to take him back down. Sharpe moves around and looks to take Quigley’s back. He gets some ground and pound in before Quigley gets back up. Quigley is able to use the jab and then come in with a right that rocks Sharpe. Quigley lands a few more punches on Sharpe until the ref jumps in between them and stops the fight.

Matt Heim vs. Maverick Cowx
Heim moves in for a fake to starts things out but Cowx is able to land a punch to the body. Cowx follows it up with a kick and gets Heim in the clinch. Cowx is able to hit him with a couple of knees before he takes Heim down. Cowx has him in side control and he is able to use his strength to keep Heim down on the mat. Heim tries to get a hold of his arm but has no luck so Cowx answers with some vicious elbows. Cowx then moves into side control on the left side of Heim where he is able to move on top and sink in an arm triangle to submit him.
Maverick Cowx wins via submission (Arm Triangle) at 1:02 in the 1st round
Josh Walker vs. Steve Goodfellow
Goodfellow gets things going by trying to push Walker to the cage with a kick but Walker answers back with a punch. Walker then goes in for the clinch and has him down against the cage. Goodfellow is able to get back up. Walker is on top trying to pass guard but does nothing and both fighters are back up. Both fighters are circling around the cage for a bit with each of them landing the odd strike. Walker is then able to hit with a couple of punches that rock Goodfellow. Walker gets him to the ground and is on top continuing to drop bombs until he lands a right that knocks Goodfellow out.
Josh Walker wins via KO at 3:41 in the 1st round
