UFC 161 Presser Notes – Title Fight Expected

UFC Logo ThumbnailTop MMA News was at the UFC 161 press conference today at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tom Wright, UFC’s Director of Operations for Canada, Australia and New Zealand, was in town to announce the event.  Here are some highlights from the conference:

  • A title fight is expected to headline the event.
  • The Antonio Rogerio Nogueira “Little Nog” vs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua rematch was confirmed for the card.
  • No other fights were confirmed.
  • Tom Wright would like to see Manitoba locals Roland Delorme and Krzysztof Soszynski on the card.
  • The UFC will only be in three Canadian cities in 2013 – Montreal, Winnipeg, and Toronto (Sept 21).
  • Winnipeg will be the fifth city in Canada to have a UFC.
  • UFC 161 will be one of only 13 global PPVs in 2013.
  • The UFC chose Winnipeg due to it:
    • being a great sports city.  Home of the Winnipeg Jets, home of the Blue Bombers, host of three Grey Cups, two Pan Am Games, etc…
    • being a perfect logical next step to building the sport of MMA and introducing it to to as many markets as possible.
    • its proximity to the center of North America.
  • Tickets for UFC 161 will go on sale on Friday, April 12.
  • Presale for UFC 161 will be on Wednesday, April 10 for Fight Club members.

    Would be nice to get a few locals on the card!! Demarce, Brigham, Doerksen and obviously delorme.
