Sweet Keegan Oliver is on the card so will be able to go get some beers, and get some food so can get back to enjoying real fights while he’s hugging people’s legs holding on for dear life.

I’m getting confused by the logic here.

If Keegan goes pro he’ll get “put to sleep”? How often do people get knocked out when they’re on top?

He’s one dimensional. See that one Guy on ufc on fox who was 155-0 in college getting beat to a pulp? He’s gonna be lying face first on the mat, waking up to a doctor eventually

How many UFC fighters with high level wrestling credentials are dominating right now? I don’t know who this Oliver guy is, but if his opponents can’t get him off of them, maybe their the ones who need improvement. If he is truly one-dimensional, he will eventually get exposed

Lots of hate on Keegan…I don’t think it’s deserved.

Also, Randy Chung vs Rick Pfiefer is no longer on this card from my understanding. Randy is now fighting Zack Snyder

  20. Donald Duck says:

People hate on Keegan cause they haven’t realized that MMA isn’t boxing in a cage. Keegan does a great job of coming in under the punches and getting a body lock and working the take down. He stays active enough to keep the fight going and once its down he begins to advance his position.

    Don’t like getting taken down?

    Learn to wrestler or Judo.

Don’t like getting controlled, dominated and submitted?

Spend more time in a Gi.

  23. Donald Duck says:

@ LOL – No idea I don’t book his fights. He’s also an amateur so there isn’t much info although there is a Robert Nelson who has had some Kickboxing exposure so maybe that’s him. Also aren’t Calgary’s MMA rules watered down to the point of pointlessness anyways? Ammy MMA doesn’t mean crap unless you’re actually doing MMA.

@ Bodwell – Shut up and go back to your hole.

  30. War Gi says:

I am pretty sure once he goes pro you will all see a more dangerous Keegan. I have seen him train as well as trained with him in mma and he is very aggresive with his ground and pound, he is also capable of tapping people out. I have trained with him for years and I have watched him tap out guys much bigger then him. He is also fighting shorter rounds because he is fighting amateur fights. Also the dude is a work horse and he deserves every fight he has ever won. If you guys trained as much as he does instead of post all the time you guys would all be in the ufc right now. O and to the guy asking about why hes fighting a guy making his debut, ask the promoters because I know for a fact Keegan would fight anybody they give him.

Oh yay, my fan club has new members. Even better these ones possess the sharpened whit and intellectual critical powers the like I have never seen. How will I ever possibly rebound from a slight directed towards my living arraignments and sexual orientation? I’m stumped guys, you got me.

Why don’t we just focus on discussing the topics at hand as opposed to your fantasies about what I do when I’m not at a computer? I know I for one will never survive a second public shaming that your razor sharp analysis could possibly deliver.

Back on topic, I haven’t actually been paying attention to amateur MMA out west but I thought everyone was fighting 5 minute rounds now. Are there still places only letting Ammy’s fight 3 min rounds?

  35. Slim says:

    Donnie,
While I can’t speak for other parts of Alberta, Calgary, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge (I’m pretty sure) have their amateurs fight 3 min rounds.

Calgary also has that rule where amateurs can’t ground and pound to the head. It would be a good idea to start layering rules so that newer fighters can get an opportunity to learn with less risks. But as they get more experienced they can start ground and pound, head kick and have longer rounds. Just so when they go pro they have had experience with these things.

On another note, Keegan’s opponent has won Nationals for wrestling in the past and they were the ones who asked for the fight and have been asking for awhile now.

  36. Donald Duck says:

Thanks guys I was pretty sure I’d heard rumors of Calgary adopting the 3 round 5 min standard for Ammy. Frankly we don’t play shorter hockey games at an amateur level why would we shorten an MMA fight?

I knew about the silliness of ‘no GnP’ in AB. I also don’t get that rule, it’s not like you’re going to get Tito-esque GnP out of an amateur and if you do then the ref should be on top of it stopping the fight. Sort of seems like rules to support a lazy commission and refs but that’s just this Duck’s opinion and not a reflection of the opinion of other Ducks or TMN.

Also thanks Slim. That makes the fight make more sense too.

  37. Cody Rempel says:

I’m definitely not a fan of the no strikes to the head of a downed opponent in amateur. It makes for a boring fight because once they get to the ground, often times their grappling game isn’t very well developed. Also, what happens when they get to the pro ranks and aren’t used to defending against head strikes on the ground?

  38. Shane BTP Mountney says:

In Michigan guys from what ive seen anyways and Woody could back me up on this …since i have had guys and myself fight on shows he promoted there …the amatuer rules are same as pros except for elbows…all gnp is allowed except for elbows…and they are only 3 min rds…its as close to pro ive seen amatuer anywhere…

from the looks of things bodwell you could have really used some time in the ammy division before going pro you should really spend more time training and less time talking because right now your not a fighter just a clown on a keyboard.

  47. Louis Fisette says:

Bodwell is pro?? hmmm weird ive never seem him land punches on the ground… In all reality the no GNP is silly. I get the no elbows and no knees t the head, I also like the no heel hook or toe hold rule sask has used in the past. I think these are all things that help a fighte develop properly without running the serious risk of cuts, concussion, torn knees/ankle. But i think longer rounds would reflect a more realistic pro mma fight with these safety rules still in place! No GNP is like no slapshots in hockey

  48. LBoutin says:

IMO Sask has it right as far as rules for ammy fighters (SMAA). No elbows, no heel hooks or twisting leg locks of any kind. No knee’s to the head. 2x5min rounds.

On a side note, I see Hard Knocks is having another show in Estevan in March. Will they be using the SMAA commission for insurance, ref’s and officials this time or will it be an unsanctioned show again ?
