Elite 1 MMA: Payback Play-by-Play

After a small hiatus from its normal home, Elite 1 returned to Casino New Brunswick for their 17th event titled Payback. A near sellout crowd was in attendance for their show and fans were treated to some good fights and a chance to see some up and comers for the organization. Here is how the night went down.

Alderic Keith vs. Jeremiah Bernard
Round 1
Keith starts by charging in on Bernard but decides to hold off on hitting him. Bernard is able to sneak in a leg kick. Keith then tries to throw a leg kick but Bernard is able to catch it. Keith then goes for another leg kick before trying for a roundhouse but is unable to connect. Bernard hits with a leg kick and a jab and then looks for the takedown but Keith stuffs it. Bernard has him pinned against the cage but Keith is able to maneuver around and take control. Keith looks for the clinch and is able to land a knee but Bernard is able to sneak in a couple of body shots. Keith then sneaks a jab while Bernard tries to turn him around but eats a knee to the forehead. Both fighters are able to break it off and get the exchange. Bernard goes for the takedown attempt and is able to get it this time. Bernard is laying down on top working in the odd shots. Keith tries to use the cage for leverage but it doesn’t help. Keith then wraps his legs around him to prevent Bernard from passing guard. Bernard gets on his feet to see if he can get a slam but Keith has a hold of his head. Bernard is able to lift him up a couple of inches up and thump him down. Bernard is still lying on top throwing the odd shot but Keith then looks to use his feet to push himself off the cage. Bernard plants his feet down to see if he can pass guard he has no success as the fight moves closer to the center. Bernard is able to lift him up for a thump. Keith tries to grab Bernard’s arm but gets punched in the head. Bernard on his feet moves Keith closer to his corner but Keith tries to turn around to see if he can get top control. He then uses his feet to push off but to no luck. Bernard is still laying on top sneaking in some shots but Keith tries to get his legs wrapped around his head for a triangle attempt. Keith is able to get a hold of his arm and is looking for the submission. Bernard is trying to punch him to get his arm free and does as the round ends.

Round 2
Keith starts the round with a leg kick that gets Bernard against the cage but Bernard is able to get one in himself. That kick hits Keith in the groin and referee Roger Dorion stops the match and gives Bernard a warning. The matchup quickly resumes with a roundhouse kick by Keith but Bernard is able to move out of the way. Keith is able to connect with a leg kick that puts Bernard against the cage and he is able to land with a knee. Bernard tries to push him with a couple of punches but Keith is able to get a clinch hold and hit with a knee. He lets go and both fighters start an exchange with Keith landing the heavier shots. Bernard then looks for a spinning back kick but Keith moves out of the way. Keith goes back to his leg kicks. He is able to connect with a couple before Bernard catches one and looks for a single leg takedown. Keith is able to grab Bernard’s head and stop it. Bernard is still able to use it to his advantage and land a few jabs. Keith then uses his clinch to land a few knees but Bernard is able to get him off. Keith goes for another leg kick and again Bernard is able to catch it. Bernard pushes him over to the cage. Bernard has control but Keith is able to reverse it rather quickly. Keith goes back to the clinch and continues to assault Bernard with those knee shots. After absorbing shots, Bernard looks for the takedown and gets it. Bernard is on top working on some ground and pound but not much is happening. Keith then tries using his feet to push off the cage but it doesn’t work. Bernard continues to get his shots in but Keith is able to get his legs wrapped around Bernard’s head. Keith is squeezing the arms in but Keith is eventually able to grab a hold of it and secure the choke for the win.

Steve Rogers vs. Phil St-Pierre
Round 1
Rogers begins the match with a leg kick and then connects with a jab. After the jab, Rogers is able to take St-Pierre down. Rogers is on top trying to pass guard. Rogers moves him towards the cage. Rogers then looks to see if he can get side control but he stays on top. Rogers is able to land some punches and cut St-Pierre up with some of the blood splat landing on my shirt and laptop. Rogers decides to get back up and bring the match back to its feet. St-Pierre then throws a leg kick but Rogers is able to catch it. He looks for the takedown but has a little slip in the process. Both fighters are back up. Rogers is able to grab St-Pierre and slams him to the mat. Rogers has full guard but St-Pierre tries to move his body around. This move doesn’t work as Rogers takes his back. Rogers takes a few seconds but is able to sink in the rear naked chokes. He lets go for a second but is able to get it back on for the victory.

Chris Currie vs. Todd Westcott
Round 1
Both fighters circle around the cage for about 10 seconds until Currie decides to go for a leg kick. Westcott is able to land a couple of good punches to start out but Currie answers back with a jab. Currie then gets Westcott pinned against the cage. Currie has him clinched along the cage for a few minutes landing some elbows. Westcott tries to breakout but Currie moves back rather quick. Currie keeps him against the cage and looks for a big right hand but misses however he is able to hit with a knee. Currie is still grinding him along the cage content to use his dirty boxing. Both fighters break it off and Currie throws a leg kick. Westcott throws a leg kick and tries for the clinch but Currie is able to get a takedown. Currie is on top trying to pass guard but Westcott uses his left leg to wrap it around Currie’s right to prevent it. Currie is able to break it off and pass his guard and gain full mount. Currie rains bombs down for about 2o seconds before the ref stops the fight.

Dan Fowler vs. Todd Henry
Round 1
Fowler uses his right hand to scare off Henry to start it off but surprises Henry and gets the takedown. Henry has a hold of Fowler’s head and doesn’t want to let go but Fowler moves around as he tries to secure the guillotine but Fowler is able to hit him with some ground and pound. Henry lets go and Fowler is now in side control. Fowler is now on top throwing some shots that are sounding pretty powerful. Fowler then pins his face down and hits with a few shots to the body. Fowler then takes his arms and uses it to cover his mouth. He lets goes and continues to work on top with a mix of punches and elbows. Henry is trying to do what he can but Fowler is too big for him but Henry is getting him with the odd shot. With not much happening the ref stands them back up. Fowler goes for a leg kick that Henry can’t stop. Fowler then goes for the clinch and lands a few knees. Fowler lets go and goes back to the leg kicks. Fowler then throws for a left hook. Fowler and Henry exchange a few leg kicks to end the round

Round 2
Fowler hits with a leg kick to start. Henry tries to go in for a punch but Fowler hits him with a left. Fowler continues to go back with the leg kicks until Fowler is able to get him with a double leg takedown. Fowler is on top and works on some ground and pound that busts Henry’s lip and on top of his head. Fowler is then able to take his back and sink in the rear naked choke. Henry tries to hold on as long as he can but has no choice but to tap.

Mitchell Rogers vs. Chance Whalen
Round 1
Whalen is able to land a punch but Whalen answers back with a leg kick. Both fighters seem content to stand as both fighters exchange hits back and forth. Whalen goes for a punch but Rogers gets a hold of him and looks to get the clinch. Both fighters continue now to move along the cage with neither one able to get the advantage over the other. Whalen hits a few punches to the body but Rogers circles him around. Rogers looks for the leg sweep but can’t follow through. Rogers grinds him along the cage but Whalen is able to get a few punches in on his back. Rogers goes back for the leg sweep but can’t secure it. Whalen is able to circle him around. Both guys circle in the clinch but Whalen is able to get him down for a slam. Whalen is able to move into side control and pin Rogers against the cage. Whalen gets on his feet and puts him back down. Whalen now trying to get his back but Rogers is able to defend it. After a taking a couple of shots, Rogers is on top. Rogers is trying to pass guard but can’t so he throws a few punches. Whalen puts his arms around Whalen’s back so Rogers pushes him against the cage. Nothing much is happening with Rogers just laying and praying. Whalen gets a hold of his left arm but Rogers hits him a few times in the kidneys with his right. Rogers is able to land a few more punches before the round ends.

Round 2
Rogers starts with a leg kick but Whalen is able to connect with his. Both fighters try to go in for a jab but neither hit. Both men circle around but Rogers is able to rock him with a left. Rogers gets on top and starts throwing bombs until the ref decides he has seen enough.

Morgan Rhynes vs. Jeff Miller
Round 1
Miller begins with a head kick but misses but Rhynes throws one of his own and connects. The kick sends Miller to the cage but Miller tries for the clinch. Rhynes gains control and has him pinned against the cage. Rhynes looking for a single but also tries for a sweep but goes back to grinding him against the cage. Rhynes looks for the takedown again but Miller able to hit him with a knee. He goes for the takedown again but Miller is able to grab his head for a guillotine attempt on the ground. Miller can hold on so Rhynes has top position but not full guard. Rhynes passes guard to side control. Miller tries to get back up but is unable to. Rhynes moves around and gets back on top to work some ground and pound. Miller has his left arm but Rhynes breaks free and goes on his feet for some ground and pound. Miller tries to go for a leg kick off his back but can’t hit Rhynes. Miller grabs his arm but Rhynes punches him a few times to break free but Rhynes gets back on top. He switches to north south position. Rhynes moves around again and gets a knee to the back but Miller gets back up but Rhynes pins him down and gets into side control. Rhynes continues to grind it out but moves to the left side for side control. Rhynes goes back on top. Rhynes gets on feet and moves into side control and is able to land a few punches. Rhynes has his back but loses it and both fighters are standing. Both start to exchange but Rhynes is able to land a takedown before the round ends

Round 2
Rhynes looks for a head kick to begin round 2 but holds off but then tries for another but no luck. Both fighters circle around until Miller tries to move in but holds back. Rhynes then looks for a roundhouse kick but again he is unable to connect. Rhynes is able to hit with a big right that sends him down and Rhynes goes on top. Rhynes continues to work the ground and pound until Rhynes is able to take his back. Rhynes then gets on his feet and hits with some big punches. Rhynes goes back down and works the ground and pound until the ref steps in.

Amateur Card
Mike Thorne vs. Mathieu Mazerolle
Round 1
Thorne looks so start things with a big punch but holds off and pushes Mazerolle against the cage. Thorne is looking for a single leg takedown but eats a couple of punches before he grabs the other leg and gets the takedown. Thorne is looking to get full mouth but Mazerolle has a hold of his left arm. Thorne is on top with his arm locked is still able to land some punches and elbows. Mazerolle tries to turn his body around but has no luck. Thorne stands back up but goes back down with Mazerolle wrapping one of his legs up. Thorne gets the leg free and moves to side control. Thorne then hits with some knee shots to the body. He then tries to go back on top but Mazerolle is still able to tie that one knee up. Mazerolle is able to get back up but Thorne is able to get his back. Thorne gets the legs hooked in but can’t sink in the arms. Thorne eventually gets in in and secures the submission victory.

Ryan Potter vs. Gabriel Vienneau
Round 1
Potter looks to get the center of the cage early but Vienneau is able to connect with a couple of leg kick. Potter tries to go in but Vienneau hits him with a knee. Potter then is able to take Vienneau down but he stands back up. Potter goes back down but Vienneau gets a hold of his neck looking for a guillotine. He tries to wraps his legs around him but Potter breaks free all together and moves into side control. Potter then is able to get full guard and rain down some punches. Potter trying to move around and is able to get a heel hook. He tries to hold on but let’s go. Potter gets back on top and looks to grab the left arm of Vienneau for a Kimura attempt. He is able to get it while Vienneau tries to turn around but he tapes out. The Ref does not see it at first but is able to catch it a few seconds later. Potter wins but Vienneau screams in pain and it appears that his arm his broken.

Brandon Chaisson vs. Joseph MacDougall
Round 1
Chaisson comes out quickly to start the fight with a few punches and a spinning back kick. MacDougall is able to push him off with a leg kick. Both fighters take center of the cage and MacDougall throws a kick that hits Chaisson in the groin. After about 30 seconds the match continues. Chaisson throws a good left right hand combination but holds off on the leg kick. MacDougall connects with a leg kick but Chaisson answers back. Chaisson then pushes him against the cage. MacDougall gets control and looks for the clinch. Chaisson moves him around and gives him against the cage. MacDougall has him against the door but Chaisson works the knees and breaks the clinch off goes back to throwing kicks. Chaisson then tries for a spinning back kick but misses. Chaisson continues to back to leg kicks then rocks MacDougall with a couple of punches. MacDougall is able to recover and get a few punches in but Chaisson pushes him back against the cage. Chaisson grinds its out and lands a few more punches before the round ends

Chaisson starts the round by throwing a few punching combinations. Chaisson then connects with a right and then follows it up with a head kick. MacDougall goes for a front kick but misses. Chaisson looks for a spinning back fist but holds off. Both fighters circle around the center of the cage until Chaisson throws a leg kick and then lands a spinning back fist that rocks MacDougall. Chaisson pushes him against the cage and continues with some punching combinations. MacDougall tries for the clinch but Chaisson is the one landing with the knees. MacDougall tries for the takedown but is stuffed. MacDougall then tries for a clinch but again gets hits with a couple of knees. Chaisson is then able to slam MacDougall down. Chaisson is on top trying to pass guard and he throws some body shots. Chaisson gets on his feet to put some power behind it but after throwing a few decides to go back down. MacDougall tries to grab a hold of his head but can’t do much off his back. Chaisson looks to stand back up and circle around to side control and he tries for a kiruma attempt but sees the opportunity but let’s go. He decides to go for it again. He almost had it but the round ends

Chaisson charges in right away and looks for a head kick but MacDougall is able to block it. Chaisson for a right hook but can’t connect but he is able to follow it up with the jab. Chaisson then moves him against the cage with a combination. Chaisson continues to punch away then looks for a leg kick that MacDougall catches. MacDougall tries for a front kick but holds off. Chaisson takes the center of the cage and hits with a big right. Both fighters circle around Chaisson mixing his stand-up. Chaisson hits with a left but MacDougall hits him with a few kicks. MacDougall goes for a spinning back kick but Chaisson blocks it. Chaisson has him pinned against the cage where he hits with a few legs kicks. MacDougall then hits with a good jab that lands right on the chin. Chaisson continues to hold him on the cage and this with the odd punches. Both fighters break free with Chaisson land a few leg kicks. MacDougall tries for a last second attempt with a spinning back kick but holds off as the round ends

    Good god, whoever wrote the recap of the Potter vs. Vienneau fight needs to rewatch the video a few times and rewrite a proper summary.
