Southern vs. Alessio Set For Aggression FC 14 in Edmonton

It’s not the title shot Kurt Southern was originally looking for but he may have found an even bigger fight. Fans, as well as Southern himself have been calling for tough fights and when Southern issued a challenge to John Alessio on Twitter and Alessio accepted he got one, setting up an exciting Lightweight bout for Aggression FC 14 in Edmonton.

Kurt Southern has been on the shelf for almost a year and a half and recently dropped out of the top ten rankings. Southern will look to regain that position in this bout. Prior to his long lay-off Southern posted three straight wins over Jorge Britto, Brad Cardinal and Mukai Maromo respectively and a record of 10-3 overall. Southern has finished 70% of his victories and also holds wins over Martin Grandmont, Kevin Manderson and Evan Sanguin.

John Alessio, the #5 ranked Lightweight in Canada is also scheduled to fight in Victoria at Aggression FC 13 where he will take on Dave Mazany. Alessio will looke to erase the memory of a pair of losses in the UFC where he dropped decisions to Shane Roller and Mark Bocek. Prior to his most recent Octagon appearences, Alessio won 10 of 11 with his only loss coming to rising prospect Siyar Bahadurzada with wins over the likes of Ryan Healy, Luiz Firmino, Sergey Golyaev, War Machine, Chris Clements, Luigi Fioravanti and Andrew Buckland.

What if Mazany wins? Should he fight Southern instead, and then does that also become a #1 contender fight?

  6. Dean Panas says:

I’ll answer that one Cody. If Mazany beats Alessio his next fight in AFC will be for the title. It is the main reason the fight was signed.

Dean is correct, if Mazany beats Alessio his next fight will be for the title. In that case if Southern beats Alessio he will get next shot after Mazany.

Didn’t realize he had a fight lined up for sure until after I posted that comment. This is looking like it would be worth a trip to Edmonton.
