The Most Wanted Lightweight in Canada
OK, so maybe Brad Cardinal is not the most hated Lightweight in Canada, but he sure gets called out the most. Exhibit A: Jesse Gross‘ comments following his Score Fighting Series win over Seiji Sugiman-Marangos.
“I know I’m not always on my best behaviour but it’s getting close to Christmas. Santa, if you’re listening, please just give me one wish. Grab your sack, empty out the toys, fill it with some balls and drop it off at Brad Cardinal’s house. I want that guy in a rematch so bad.”
Really? Brad Cardinal has no balls? Last I looked, Brad Cardinal was so cowardly that both times he stepped in the cage with Adrenaline Training Center fighters he walked out without a loss.
Now the Ghost is one scary, bad ass dude and his loss to Cardinal is the crux of this hatred. At Wreck: Unstoppable, Gross clearly won the first two rounds of their Lightweight title fight – not without problems, mind you. Gross repeatedly ate Cardinal’s jab and was caught in a triangle choke in those first two rounds, but there was little doubt that although bloodied, entering the third round Jesse looked like he would remain undefeated and capture that Wreck title. But shit happens in MMA. Does it ever.
Early in the third, Gross got dropped. Cardinal started pounding on the grounded Gross, who was in big trouble. In my opinion, Cardinal erred in attempting a rear naked instead of continuing the ground and pound. However, inexplicably, ref Philippe Chartier stopped the fight, apparently the only person to see Jesse Gross tap. The ending is so confusing that Don Wilson’s play-by-play calls it a TKO stoppage, while the official result later becomes a submission win. Clearly, an early stoppage and one that robbed Jesse Gross of a chance to escape that choke.
But Jesse wasn’t the only one to lose out. That early stoppage also robbed Brad Cardinal of a clean victory. Down on the scorecards, sure, but Cardinal had Jesse in a world of trouble in that third round and had clearly reversed the momentum and started winning that fight. Amid boos following the fight, Cardinal fueled the fire by claiming that he had the choke in and it was either tap or nap. Bonesaw has been a wanted man ever since.
Seventeen months later and nine hours from Wreck’s Gatineau headquarters, Brad Cardinal was clearly the most despised fighter by the Sarnia crowd as he entered the SFS cage to face Chris Horodecki in the main event (even after the asinine things that came out of Tony Hervey’s mouth!). Cardinal looked good in a close round, but an accidental head clash caused a cut and ended the bout in a No Contest.
It’s only logical that Horodecki would want a rematch following such a unsatisfying bout, making him the second fighter that night to want a future match with Cardinal. Suprisingly, AFC fighter and fifth ranked Canadian Lightweight John Alessio immediately jumped into the fray from out of nowhere with his tweet,
I want to smash Brad Cardinal!!
With two upcoming fights at AFC and no dance partner announced for Alessio on November 23, Cardinal could certainly appease The Natural’s tweet.
@johnalessio79 you smashing cardinal that would be something i’d fly to BC to watch #100%l
It’s funny. Cardinal is a super nice individual. If not for his ill-timed comments following his Wreck win, Bonesaw would not be in this position.
So would you want to be in the WRECK Lightweight champion’s shoes and have four top Canadian fighters hoping to harm you in the cage?
Or maybe you are a fighter sitting on the shelf just wishing you had an opportunity to fight the Ghost, the Polish Hammer, the Natural, and the Body Snatcher?
Or are you are just another member of the growing MMA posse that’s on the hunt for the Bonesaw !!!
