Also, and I know I’ve beaten this particular horse to death a few times, but Keith you cite examples in sports that have become cultural institutions. The public willingness to accept (and even in some cases expect) bad behavior from athletes in these sports is almost boundless.

MMA is still new (and in some cases not even allowed) in North America and as such we still need to be aware of the messages we send to the public on large. We’re not small enough where people don’t pay attention and we’re not large enough where we can risk damaging the sport’s image.

A hockey player who commits a crime is signled out as an individual whereas in MMA everyone is still lumped together. Look at how Bobby’s current legal issues are being presented as an almost MMA issue.

I agree it’s the promotion that hires the guys. I am saying they should not be licenced. IMO a promotion can hire whoever they want, but if the people who are bad for the sport do not get licenced in the first place we have no problem.

It’s like giving a drivers licence to a guy who has repreatedly had it taken away. In the case of DUI, I don’t understand why the same guys are losing their licence over and over again, they clearly shouldn’t get it back. If everyone who applies for a licence gets one, what’s the point of an application process? Their needs to be someone and a list of reasons to say “no, you do not qualify for a fighters licence because you are being charged with assault, you lost your last 10 fights in a row, you were knocked out twice in the last XXX, etc…”

  3. yeah…but that makes for a better headline. MMA fighter eats heart of training partner is way better than Joe Shmoe eats heart of Jack Schmoe.

How about Nascar driver get arrested for drunk driving and resisting arrest last year? No penalty.

Headlines were “Nascar driver arrested for DWI” yet that guy was in the minor league Nationwide Series.

If MMA can have deaths and still be alive and kicking, I think we are not as fledgling and as fragile as people on these boards think.

Ok so should Devon be allowed to fight?

it is a a sport right so why dont we just kick all the crimals off our hockey, basketball, football, any real sports team cause criminals can’t have second chances lol.

    Just my thoughts

  5. Gunner says:

NOPE criminals cannot have second chances……… BUT someone who once made a mistake in life has shown remorse, paid his dues to people around him, accepted there wrongs, tried to prove they are a better person has done all this for a period of time to prove its not a show…. THEN YES they deserve a second chance. None of which is the case in this situation

So this guy was convicted, but has he been sentenced yet, and what does the court feel is an appropriate punishment.

What if the commish allows this guy to fight as a professional athlete, and then in a month the court sends him to jail for this.

Maybe if he’s already served his time, or paid his dues however he needs to and that has been completed, only then should he potentially be allowed to compete.

In my not so humble opinion

I agree that the sport probably isn’t as fragile as some may think, but it still has a long way to go.

It’s tough for some of us, who have been a fan of this over the past 19 years and all the phases the sport has been through, it’s hard to not be defensive of what the sport is, and where it’s going.

And more importantly it’s very hard to sit back and watch so many Non MMA people running commissions and being involved in how the sport is shaped.

  9. Donald Duck says:

Ain’t that the truth. Seems whenever commissions get someone of quality involved they are either quickly replaced or leave out of frustration. Right now with Mahood being involved in the BC Commission there is good sounds from that side of the country but how long will that last?

Are there any commissions out there that have fighters, coaches etc… sitting on them?

  10. mike kent says:

the bottom line is the edmonton commission gave this guy a liscence and Ken and the KOTC gave this guy a fight. If you dont agree with that then dont watch or support the show and if you dont mind or just dont care then go and watch.

It sucks when people that have fought mma but arent mixed martial artists commit crimes and the headlines read MMA fighter charged with murder but that happens in all sports or walks of life.

If the courts dont have restrictions on them fighting , and the commision doesnt see the need to ban them, then a promotor choses knowingly to use them then its upto the consumer whether or not they take in the show , if it bothers them and their moral compass that much then boycott the show , enough people do it then maybe KOTC and other promos will stop using these guys

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 3 Thumb down 12

  11. Cody Rempel says:

@Donald Duck… I know the BC commission has used John Alessio and Mac Danzig as refs but not sure if they had any other involvement in the commission or as judges, Lloydminster has had Mitch Clarke as a referee but again not sure if that’s the only thing he was involved with.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  12. Donald Duck says:

Cody, I was more thinking on the actual policy side. How many commissions have actually had someone with ring time (either gloves on or working a corner) sitting as an active commission member?

  13. Donald Duck says:

@ Mike – That’s basically what we’re left with. The consumer will vote with their wallets. Great point, just sad that there isn’t anything in place to prevent this.

  14. Idolmaker says:

Great points all around. I am a perspective guy. Before I come to a decision, I view from all angles. I generally still can’t be swayed, therefore I still contend that a guy who fights professionally, being charged for a vicious assault, should lose the ability to fight amongst the masses. The sport is getting stronger everyday, but I still have the paranoia of losing it.

  23. booboo says:

@IDOL- SINCE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT VIOLENT CRIMINALS IN MMA , SHOULD RYAN FORD BE COMMISSIONED TO FIGHT CAUSE OF HIS PASSED ? I LIKE FORD AS A FIGHTER AND NOT AS A CONVICTED VIOLENT CRIMINAL , EVEN THOUGH ITS NOT MURDER OR WHAT TODD STOUT DID , DONT WE HAVE TO CLASSIFY HIS PAST AS VIOLENT ALSO EVEN THOUGH I THINK HE HAS CHANGED AND PAYED HIS DEBT TO SOCIETY. EVEN THOUGH I THINK MMA SAVED HIS LIFE DOESNT MEAN THAT THERE ARE FANS OUT THERE THAT DONT BELIEVE CONVICTED VIOLENT CRIMINALS SHOULD BE IN OUR SPORT. WE CANT SINGLE OUT VIOLENCE AS PER PERSON WHEN THERE ARE PLENTY OF US THAT DONT THINK ANY VIOLENCE OUTSIDE THE CAGE NEEDS TO BE A PART OF THE INSIDE OF THE CAGE UNLESS REMORSE AND AMENDS ARE MADE TO WERE IT CHANGES YOU AS A PERSON . FORD MABE THAT EXCEPTION , BUT IT DOES NT CHANGE THE PUBLICS PERCEPTION OF HIM ! MMA IS A DISCIPLINE NOT A REHAB FOR VIOLENT FIGHTERS WHO SAY THEY WANT TO CHANGE . I LIKE FORD AS A FIGHT FAN AND MABE HE HAS CHANGED AND WHATEVER YOUR DOING SEEMS RIGHT AND FOR THAT I BELIEVE A SECOND CHANCE IS EARNED!

  24. booboo says:

FACT OF THE MATTER IS BEFORE I GOT HURT , EVERY TIME I FILLED AN APPLICATION OUT IT ASKS ME IF IM A CONVICTED FELON , NO ONE I MEAN NO ONE WITH A CRIMINAL HISTORY WOULD GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK , SO I FEEL THE PROMOTIONS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO ALLOW FIGHTERS ON THEIR CARDS WITH THAT BAGGAGE , SO PROMOTIONS CAN TAKE THAT CHANCE ALL THEY WANT CAUSE WE AS AN MMA COMMUNITY HAVE SEEN PLENTY PROMOTIONS FAIL CAUSE OF MISTAKES MADE AND IN MY BOOK HIRING A CONVICTED CRIMINAL TO FIGHT IS ON THEM , NOT THE COMMISSION

  25. Idolmaker says:

Ford definitely has a violent past. I’m not trying to be hypocritical in any way. I’ve always been a bit leery of ones past, but after reading Todd stoutes story, I’ve changed. In my mind I’m in the best place I’ve ever been. I see things clearly and am making decisions, based on that. I see things much more clearly than at anytime in my life, and realize cause and effect. I have praised ford in the past, and realize he has changed for the better. However I’m sticking with my guns and saying I personally don’t agree with it, and that’s how I feel. I appreciate the talents of these guys, I just won’t follow them in anyway.

  29. Oilcity30 says:

Guess I shoulda read the whole post oops lol, it’s one thing to let someone who has charges pending fight especially if they are violent or sexual but fuck man if someone does the crime then pays there do’s I think they deserve a second chance. Ryan fuckin Ford does a lot for charity’s ,golf tournaments etc.. Ya he has a past but now he has wife kids a career lay off the guy for fuck sakes fuck I hate when all u people bring up his past the guy bust his ass off and puts on for his city everytime

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

  30. Gunner says:

Oil i agree with most but with exception of the bringing up the past…. it is more of a how the past is brought up. KEY WORD “PAST” Ryan has made that his past and from everything i know (which is not all that much) with exception of meeting him and his wife on a couple of occasions he is one of the few that have left things in the past and moved on to provide better lives for himself and those around him.

Like i said above thats not the case here, from what i have read and heard there is no remorse, no accountability, no i was wrong, not even any admittance of wrong all it is, is a guy who knew what he did was wrong and dispicibly cowardly and still just proceeded to let the courts follow through to prove his guilt and still not man up…. So you be the judge ? is he reformed ? does he deserve a second chance yet ?

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

  31. booboo says:

@OILCITY – THE ONE THING YOU CANT CHANGE IS THE PAST , THE PAST WAS BROUGHT UP CAUSE THE DISCUSSION ON VIOLENT CRIMINALS WAS BROUGHT UP. I JUST DONT THINK WE NEED TO DISCRIMINATE TOWARDS ANYONE REGARDLESS. FORD IS A PRIME EXAMPLE THAT CHANGE , DEDICATION AND REMORSE CAN BRING ANY FIGHTER A SECOND CHANCE. FORD IS A BAD ASS FIGHTER AND AM A FIGHT FAN OF HIS, JUST NOT A FORD FAN . AND AS TO YOUR SUCK A DICK COMMENT . MINE IS BEING SUCKED BY THE WIFE WITH THE D D S MY FRIEND AS WE SPEAK !
