Elite 1 MMA “Redemption”: Play-by-Play

It was a beautiful evening in Moncton, New Brunswick as Elite 1 offered up their latest card titled “Redemption”, which took place at the Redball Internet Center. The crowd was a little smaller then usual for the event, but fans that did buy tickets got there money’s worth with some great fights early on to start the night, and a Title fight that went the full five rounds.

Ricky Goodall vs. Richard Arsenault (Elite 1 MMA – Welterweight Title Fight)

Round 1

Both fighters circle around the cage and Arsenault starts things off with a leg kick. Arsenault is moving around on his feet pretty well so far. Arsenault goes for a sidekick while Goodall attempts a front kick but neither fighter connects. Goodall hits Arsenault with a front kick, while Arsenault moves in and lands a body shot in response. Arsenault follows this up by landing a few punches on Goodall, who fires back with a head kick that hits Arsenault’s chin followed by a leg kick that hits his knee. Arsenault answers back with a head kick but can’t connect. Goodall throws a jab then a kick that Arsenault catches but Goodall still manages to work some jabs in and pushes him against the cage. The fighters break and both fighters circle with each fighter throwing the occasional jab. Arsenault hits with a leg kick but can’t hit with a follow up punch. He continues with some left jabs but misses with a leg kick. Goodall goes for a haymaker but misses. Arsenault then hits with a few shots that put Goodall against the cage. Goodall is taken down but is able to get back up. Both guys continue to circle around. Arsenault then hits Goodall with a front kick. They go back to circling around until Goodall lands a kick to the body. Arsenault moves to land a jab and then a leg kick. Both fighters continue to circle around and decide to start swinging and trade shots with each other as the first round ends

Round 2

Both guys circle around the cage and Goodall connects with a jab while Arsenault hits him with a leg kick. Arsenault goes for a head kick but Goodall is able to block it. Goodall moves in and connects with a few jabs. Arsenault continues to throw leg kicks. Both guys circle around the cage with Arsenault throwing a kick that Goodall blocks. Goodall lands a leg kick which is answered by Arsenault hitting him with a jab that pushes Goodall back. Goodall rebounds and tries for a head kick, missing. Goodall then hits with a inside leg kick that came close to the groin but Arsenault says he is ok. Goodall gets a jab but Arsenault hits him with a big leg kick. Goodall again lands a jab and Arsenault hits him with a punch that seems to rock him a little bit. Arsenault has his opponent down now working some ground and pound with Goodall trying to get back up. Arsenault looks for an armbar but Goodall pushes him off and is back on his feet. Both men circle the cage with Goodall landing with some jabs and Arsenault hitting back with a one two punch combo followed by a leg kick. Goodall goes for a front kick and misses. Both men circle again with Goodall continuing to pump his jab and gets a inside leg kick in. Both men circle as time wines down and are exchanging jabs and leg kicks. Arsenault gets a jab while Goodall hits back with two to end the round.

Round 3

Goodall hits with a leg kick to starts things off. Both men throw punches with each one connecting. Goodall hits with another leg kick. Arsenault tries to punch him but Goodall is able to block it off and fire back with a few jabs. Arsenault lands a jab but Goodall hits back with a leg kick. Arsenault then tries for an uppercut and misses. Both guys start to swing and hit each other with a punch. Goodall then hits Arsenault with a kick/jab combo. He has Arsenault against the cage now but it’s Arsenault who is looking for a takedown, which Goodall stuffs. Both circle around the cage again until Goodall goes for a head kick that misses, he then hits with his jabs that send Arsenault’s blood flying. Both go back to circling around the cage with Goodall hitting with a leg kick. Goodall continues to work his jab but both guys start to swing and connect with punches. Goodall gets Arsenault against the cage but they break and both guys circle around once again. Arsenault throws a leg kick but Goodall connects with two inside kicks. Goodall lands with some jabs that gets Arsenault’s eye cut and he continues to throw punches while Arsenault tries to move out of the way. Goodall then hits with a knee to the body and some jabs to end the round.

Round 4

Both men circle the cage to start the round with Arsenault connecting with a leg kick. Goodall is able to counter back with a body shot and then is able to get a knee in there. Arsenault gets a leg kick but is having trouble connecting with punches as Goodall blocks them. Goodall continues to go back to the jab and keeps connecting with it. Goodall then gets his opponent against the cage. Arsenault looks for a takedown but Goodall hits him with a knee. Arsenault does go down but is but is able to get back up quickly. Goodall continues to take the center of the cage and working his jab until Arsenault connects with a punch. Goodall still continues to work his jab while Arsenault is having trouble landing any of his punches. Both have a little slug fest but Arsenault moves out the way. Goodall keeps circling around the cage and pumping his jab effectively. Goodall goes for a leg kick but it hits Arsenault in the groin. Arsenault takes a break and the fight continues. Goodall throws more jabs and with 10 seconds left both guys start swinging at each other to end the round.

Round 5

The fans are cheering as the final round begins with Goodall taking control of the center of cage. He is able to hit with a jab but can’t hit on the roundhouse kick. Goodall keeps mixing in his jabs and kicks but Arsenault is now trying to push forward. Both guys throw some punches with Arsenault looking to get the better of the exchange. Goodall then throws a leg kick which Arsenault counters with a left hook. Arsenault hits with a leg kick and a left punch. Both are exchanging shots now with Goodall blocking most of Arsenault’s punches. They decide to exchange again with each man connecting with some jabs. Goodall continues with the jab and leg kicks but Arsenault hits him with a shot that rocks him and is able to get Goodall to the ground and get on top. Arsenault is hitting with some punches when Goodall tries to escape. Arsenault then tries to grab his head for a guillotine but Goodall moves around and is able to get on top of Arsenault. Goodall is trying to pass his guard and land some ground and pound. Goodall stays on top until the round ends and all the fans give a standing ovation.

Final score is 48-47 Arsenault

All three judges score the fight 48-47 for Richard Arsenault, as he wins by Unanimous Decisionand successfully defends the Elite 1 MMA Welterweight Title.

Nabil Khatib vs. Matt MacGrath

Round 1

Both fighters trade shots to start things off. MacGrath then throws a leg kick which is countered by Khatib throwing a couple of right hands. MacGrath goes for a takedown. MacGrath is still working and is able to take Khatib’s back and get him down. Khatib seemed to be hurt, and the ref stops the fight to ask if he is able to continue. Khatib says yes and the bout resumes. MacGrath moves to side control and then throw some punches to the head. MacGrath once again takes Khatib’s back with Khatib trying to get back to his feet. He is unable as MacGrath gets his hooks in. Khatib rolls over and MacGrath is in side control as Khatib tap outs.

Matt Macgrath wins the fight via tap out due to injury at 1:13 in the 1st round.

Jesse Ronson vs. Eric St-Pierre

Round 1

The fight begins with St-Pierre moving in with a jab and Ronson responding back with a jab of his own, followed by a kick that is subsequently followed up by a big right hand. St-Pierre goes for the takedown and is able to get it. St-Pierre is in Ronson’s full guard. He is trying to pass his guard but is not able to do much. St-Pierre attempts to slam Ronson against the mat but can’t. The ref warns St-Pierre to do something or he will stand them back up so he responds by punching Ronson and moves him closer to his corner. St-Pierre throws a couple of body shots but Ronson is able to get up, eating a couple of shots for it. Both fighters move around until they end up in a clinch along the cage. Ronson is able to get a knee and St-Pierre looks to go for a sweep. Ronson breaks it off and both fighters start swinging with Ronson connecting with a huge shot that sends St-Pierre down to the mat forcing the ref to stop the fight.

Jesse Ronson wins via KO at 2:17 in the 1st round.

Matt Desroches vs. Todd Henry

Round 1

Desroches gets things starting by hitting with a leg kick. He then hits Henry with a jab and is able to get out of the way when Henry throws one. Desroches goes back and hits Henry with a few kicks that almost send Henry down. Henry then tries to move in for a takedown but Desroches sprawls out and is able stuff it. Desroches then gets his back and almost gets him in a crucifix position but then grabs an arm for a kimura attempt. Desroches throws a few punches to loosen him up, but Henry tries to turn around. This backfires as Desroches is able to get on top and pass his guard. Henry continues to try and see if he can escape but he keeps eating punches from Desroches. Henry is able to turn on his stomach but Desroches is able to take his back. Desroches continues to mix in punches and the odd elbow that seem to be getting louder everytime he connects. Desroches continues to work his ground and pound on Henry’s face and ears. Desroches is still throwing bombs when the referee decides that Henry has had enough.

Matt Desroches wins via TKO (strikes) at 3:40 in the 1st round

Stephen Clement vs. Nick Guay

Round 1

Guay starts the bout looking for a jab but does not connect with it. He then tries again and follows it up with a kick that hits Clement’s knee. Both fighters circle around the cage with Clement landing with a punch. Guay tries to move in but Clement connects with a couple of jabs. Guay backs up and then goes for an overhand right that misses. Clement gets him in the clinch but Guay has a hold of his head. Clement is able to move around and has Guay’s back. Clement looking for a rear naked choke and manages to eventually get his opponent down. After looking for a the rear naked choke he is finally able to sink it in and Guay eventually taps after a bit of struggle.

Stephen Clement wins via submission (Rear Naked choke) at 2:08 in the 1st round.

Dave Spence vs. Ryan Gallant

Round 1

Both fighters land with some knees, Spence is able to take Gallant down and get in guillotine choke. Gallant tries use his elbow to make Spence lose his grip. Spence lets go and is now on top and has Gallant near the fence in his corner. Spence is trying to pass guard but Gallant is throwing punches from the bottom. Gallant tries to push him off. Spence postures up and is able to land some straights. Spence is still on top but isn’t able to pass guard. Gallant finds some power reserves and he is able to reverse and now has top position. It doesn’t last long though as Spence moves back on top in a scramble. But once again Gallant is able to move around and get back on top and work some ground and pound. He then tries for an arm bar but Spence is able slip around and end the round on top.

Round 2

Both fighters move in and Gallant is able to connect with a kick. Gallant moves in and lands with a leg kick but can’t connect with the follow up punch. Spence then attempts an overhand right that misses. Both guys throw a leg kick and Gallant follows that up with a spinning back fist that Spence moves out of the way of. Spence then lands a kick and pushes his opponent against the cage. Spence has him in the clinch but Gallant is able to move around and get him on the ground. Gallant is working on some ground and pound. Spence tries to escape but does not have much luck and eats some punches for his trouble. Gallant continues to throw punches and tries for an armbar. Spence is able to avoid it and tries to get back up. As he does this Gallant is able to get a hold of his arm and snap on the submission forcing Spence to tap out.

Ryan Gallant wins via submission (arm bar) at 3:09 in the 2nd round.

 

Amateur Card

Sean Dearing vs. Jeremy Miskin

Round 1

Dearing pushes Miskin away with a jab to kick things off  which is followed by Miskin going for a spinning kick that misses. Miskin then takes the center of the cage and connects with a leg kick. Miskin then kicks Dearing in the gut and throws a solid punch that lands as well. They circle around the cage until Miskin connects with a leg kick. Miskin then lands a big superman punch that rocks Dearing a little and both clinch against the cage. They break it off but Miskin hits with a leg kick then with an uppercut that has Dearing down on the canvas. Miskin is on top and gains full mouth and works some ground and pound. He tries to grab Dearing’s arm for a submission attempt and it seems to be a triangle choke. Miskin still on top trying to work on that arm for an armbar now. After a couple of failed attempts but he is able to get an arm and make Dearing tap.

Jeremy Miskin wins by submission (arm bar) at 2:56 in the 1st round

Curt Ferguson vs. Luke Noel

Round 1

Round 1- The bout begins with both fighters exchanging kicks. After some circling around both men end up in the clinch. During the clinch Ferguson throws a punch at Noel but shortly after both fighters break it off. Noel is able to take Ferguson down. Noel doesn’t have much luck on the ground as both fighters stand back up. Noel is able to land some jabs on Ferguson. Noel is able to get a takedown, takes his opponents back. He is not able to move around much as the round ends.

Round 2

Both fighters touch gloves but Ferguson sneaks in a leg kick whiles this happens. Both fighters are now in the clinch along the cage. After a little tangling, Noel is able to get him down and get some ground and pound in but he loses position. Ferguson is able switch around and grab Noel’s back for a rear naked choke attempt. Ferguson is trying to sink his left arm in but Noel’s is not doing much on the ground. He gets his arm under Noel’s chin. The ref tells Noel to do something but Noel is not able to move around much so the ref calls the fight there.

Mike Thorne vs. Mitchell Rogers

Round 1

Thorne starts off the fight with a kick but Rogers catches it and is able to land a couple of punches. The fight ends up going to the ground with Thorne having top position. Rogers is able to reverse and after trying some ground and pound he is able pick Thorne up and slam him down. Not much is going on but Throne tries to see if he can trap Rogers in a choke but Rogers is able to get another slam. Thorne, on his back tries to grab his arm now and he receives another power slam from Rogers. As the round ends Rogers tries to grab his back rear naked choke but Thorne is saved by the bell. 3 slams!

Round 2

The round starts with Rogers throwing an overhand right that sends Thorne back to the cage. Thorne is able get a hold of Rogers and take him down into side control and works some ground and pound. Rogers is then able to get himself back up and clinch along the cage. Thorne is able to counter that and get him back on the mat with a single leg takedown. Thorne now has him on the ground and he is throwing some punches while trying to take his back. Thorne is able to get position and tries for a rear naked choke. He has a little trouble trying to sink his arm in but he moves his body to get better chance of securing it. After a little adjustment he is able to get the arm under Rogers chin and squeeze until he taps out.

Mike Thorne wins by submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 2:12 in the 2nd round
