Unified MMA 12 Recap


The Mirage Banquet Hall in Edmonton, Alberta was sold out yet again for Unified MMA 12. In the main event, Shane “Shaolin” Campbell and Tim “Shady” Smith went to war for the Unified MMA Welterweight Title with Campbell ultimately coming out on top using his underrated submission game finishing Smith with a rear naked choke in the second round.

Tim Smith vs. Shane Campbell
Round 1: Smith lands a leg kick and Campbell responds with a body kick and a pair of vicious leg kicks that welt the leg of Smith. Smith lands another leg kick and ties up but Campbell is able to get the takedown to half guard. Smith regains full guard but Campbell passes nicely to side control. Campbell lands a nice right before they get back to their feet. Campbell slips on a kick and Smith lands in full guard. Smith lands rights and Campbell gives his back but quickly gets back to his feet. Campbell looks for a standing kimura and drops to the ground and Smith is able to pull his arm free. Smith stands out of the guard but eats an upkick and drops back down with a big right just before the end of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Smith

Round 2: Smith looks for a spinning back fist and at the same time Campbell connects with a leg kick. Campbell lands a shot and takes Smith down, taking the back and landing huge shots. Campbell stands and kicks the legs before dropping back down and connecting with big lefts and rights. Campbell passes to half guard and continues to pound away and adds some elbows. Campbell lands a few shots to the back of the head and referee Andy Social is forced to take a point from Campbell. On the restart Campbell lands a big left and looks for a suplex but Smith is able to avoid the slam. They tie up against the cage and Smith trips Campbell to the mat landing in guard before moving to side control. Smith finally moves to full mount and looks for a guillotine but Campbell sweeps and takes full mount himself. Smith gives up his back and Campbell sinks a very tight rear naked choke and it doesn’t take long for Smith to tap out.

Neal Anderson vs. Dia Grant
They exchange shots before Anderson drops Grant with a big left. Anderson pounces on top with several hammer fists but Grant is eventually able to roll away and ends up on top briefly. Anderson scrambles back to his feet and locks on guillotine choke. Anderson jumps guard and squeezes forcing the referee to step in and end the fight. Grant immediately protests the stoppage and Anderson confirms post fight that he did not feel a tap but also couldn’t tell if he was out or not.

Jeff Larkin vs. Rocky Biggs
Round 1: Biggs immediately locks up with Larkin who lands a knee to the body. Biggs gets the takedown with a huge hip toss and lands in side control. Biggs lands a big right and Larkin replaces his guard. They scramble and ultimately Larkin ends up on top and lands some lefts before taking his back. Larkin loses position but begins to chip away with little shots. Biggs gives his back and Larkin lands some shots before looking to sink a rear naked choke. Biggs escapes and gets into his guard but Larkin lands a few shots from the bottom before the bell sounds. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Larkin

Round 2: Biggs lands a pair of solid rights before they tie up against the cage. Larkin lands a knee to the body and eats a head kick from Biggs who follows up with another right. Larkin is throwing shots but Biggs is blocking. Biggs lands another right and a push kick. Larkin responds with a combo and Biggs drops Larkin with another right. Biggs follows him down but Larkin is able to scramble into side control and connects with knees to the body. Biggs gets to his knees and Larkin is in north/south position. Biggs works back to his feet and blocks a high kick from Larkin who then slips on another attempt but pops right back up. Biggs gets the takedown to half guard and lands an elbow before time expires. Round 3: They both trade with neither landing anything significant. Biggs connects with a combo followed by a big right and an uppercut. They tie up briefly before separating and trading shots. Larkin lands some shots and Biggs comes back with a few of his own. Larkin connects with a left and again Biggs responds with a hard right before they tie up. Larkin lands a low blow and Biggs takes a brief moment to recover. On the restart Larkin connects with a combo and Biggs falls short with a combo of his own. They tie up again and Larkin lands a knee. They separate and Larkin lands a jab and Biggs comes back with a right. Larkin unleashes a combo that prompts Biggs to look for a double but it’s stuffed. Larkin connects with a head kick followed by a push kick and another. Biggs locks up but Larkin lands a knee. Biggs finishes the fight strong with an uppercut and a right before they both trade a flurry as the round comes to an end. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Larkin

Ryan Rother vs. Simon Shirt
Rother lands a push kick followed by a body shot and a leg kick. Shirt responds with a sloppy combo before they tie up against the cage. Both men trade wild shots before Rother is able to get the better of the exchange with a solid kick to the body. Rother lands a pair of jabs and leg kick before securing the clinch and unleashing a barrage of knees that prompt Shirt to look for a takedown against the cage. Rother defends and lands a knee to the body before Shirt is able to drag him down but Rother is able to get into full guard. Shirt looks for a guillotine but Rother is able to free himself and stand up and land kicks to the legs. Rother drops back down and lands several huge shots and hammerfists that force referee Thomas Collins to step in and call a halt to the contest.

Corey Knapp vs. Andrew Bard
Knapp lands a leg kick and Bard connects with a right before they tie up against the cage. They go to the ground but pop right back up and Bard locks in a guillotine and picks Knapp right off the ground. Knapp is able to pull his head free but gets caught in another guillotine attempt. This time Knapp slams his way out and they reset on their feet. They tie up again and Bard muscles him to the ground but Knapp gets back up and fires a right that Bard avoids and again bullies him to the ground. They stand back up and Bard lands a combo followed by several knees in the clinch. One of Bard’s knees lands below the belt and Knapp is given time to recover. On the restart Bard looks for a head kick but slips to the mat and Knapp pounces but Bard gets back up. Bard connects with a head kick and looks for a guillotine but Knapp goes for a takedown. Bard stays on his feet and they trade shots until Bard gets the takedown to side control and passes to full mount. Knapp sweeps but Bard unleashed a huge belly to back suplex. Knapp scrambles and looks for a flying knee but Bard avoids and ties up. Bard connects with a huge knee to the body that forces Knapp to tap out emphatically as he holds his ribs.

Neil Doty vs. Robbie Jaggard
Round 1: Jaggard throws a wild combo and they tie up and end up on the ground with Jaggard in full guard. Jaggard stands and kicks the legs before dropping to side control. Doty regains his full guard and they exchange punches on the ground. Jaggard stands and Doty connects with an upkick before Jaggard drops back into guard. Doty locks up a body triangle and lands shots from the bottom. Doty looks to land elbows from the bottom and throws up a triangle which is defended for the final seconds. Round 2: They exchange more wild shots with neither landing cleanly. They tie up and fall to the mat with Jaggard in full guard. Jaggard works the body and Doty lands elbows and punches from underneath. Doty continues connecting from the bottom and looks for another triangle. Doty locks it in and rolls to a mounted triangle forcing Jaggard to tap out.

Cam Yallits vs. Josh Ladouceur
Round 1: Ladouceur falls short with a combo and Yallits looks for the takedown but Ladouceur gets right back up. Ladouceur pulls the leg out and drags Yallits back down to the ground to full guard. Ladouceur looks to land shots but Yallits is keeping him close. Ladouceur gets some space and lands a few little shots. Yallits looks for an armbar from the bottom but Ladouceur stands and they scramble for position with Ladouceur landing in half guard. Yallits sweeps and ends up in full guard where he works the body, lands a left and more body shots. Yallits passes to full mount and goes back to the body. Yallits looks for an arm triangle but Ladouceur escapes and gets back to his feet just prior to the end of the round. Top MMA News Scores the Round 10-9 for Ladouceur

Round 2: They trade leg kicks before Yallits connects with a shot and a thunderous body kick and another. Yallits hits a head kick that glances and this time a big knee stuns Ladouceur and Yallits takes the opportunity to jump on his back and drag him to the ground where he sinks the rear naked choke and gets the fight ending tap.

Matt Knysh vs. Michael Banin
Banin lands a leg kick and fires away with a flurry. Knysh ducks underneath and scoops Banin up, slamming him to the mat in half guard. Banin sweeps to half guard and begins working the body. Banin continues to hammer away on the body and mixes in some shots to the head. Banin postures up and lands some solid rights. Banin switches to some big left elbows before Knysh is able to replace his full guard. Banin lands some right elbows before posturing up and connecting with more elbows and some punches. Knysh can do nothing but cover up as Banin continues to punish him until referee Thomas Collins steps in and recues him from any further damage.

Dell Knebush vs. Justin Jabbs – Amateur
Both fighter trade wild punches and kicks until Knebush connects with a solid left. Jabbs responds with a leg kick and looks for another but Knebush catches it and dumps him to the mat. Jabbs pops back to his feet and drags Knebush down to side control. Knebush gives up his back and Jabbs quickly sinks the rear naked choke and Knebush is forced to tap out.

Chris Jolly vs. Dennis Werbicki – Amateur
Both men connect and Jolly secures the double leg to side control. Jolly is leaking from the nose after the opening exchange and Werbicki locks in a guillotine choke and forces the tap giving Werbicki the victory in his amateur debut.
