Saskatoon, Saskatchewan’s own Elmer Waterhen will be traveling a long way for his next fight as he is scheduled to face UFC and Strikeforce veteran Falaniko Vitale in Honolulu, Hawaii July 14th for King of the Cage: Ali’Is.

Waterhen (12-15) will look to continue his already sucessful 2012 campaign as he earned a first round submission victory over Mike Froese this past March. A professional since 2003 Waterhen has faced some of Canada’s best over his storied career including Tj Grant, Jesse Bongfeldt, Gary Wright and Rory MacDonald. A long time fan favorite Waterhen is probably best known for his toughness and durability inside the cage while never turning down a fight regardless of his opponent’s record or short notice.

Vitale (29-10) is a longtime legend of the Hawain MMA scene. The Honolulu native and 808 Top Team product has fought some of the top names in MMA including Yushin Okami, Dave Mene, Robbie Lawler and Matt Lindland. Its been over a year since Vitale last stepped into the cage, a disappointing third round KO loss to Hector Lombard in Bellator.

King of the Cage: Ali’Is goes down July 14th from the Neil Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. The card also features a KOTC Flyweight (135 lbs.) title fight where Russell Doane will meet Frank Baca, also Ray Cooper will challenge Kani Correra.

Maybe Elmer has never been to Hawaii. Could be a chance for him to have a Holliday with his family. Fight doesn’t make sense in his hometown, but maybe there’s benefits he wanted. It’s opportunities to fight in other parts of the work that fighters should take advantage of in my opinion.

i don’t blame the poor fucker at all. he could stay and fight in edmonton for little or nothing or go to a nice place and make the same amount. not says edmonton isn’t nice but its no hawii. if more fighters did this the local cards might pay a little more to try and keep guys. i think there still is to many fighting for little or nothing. give er hell elmer you never no what can happen.

Elmer is always a candidate for an upset and despite being a very tough fight this is probably kind of a reward or a thank you for Elmer being such a loyal fighter to King of the Cage! War Waterhen!

I never fought anywhere sexy. The most excitement I ever had at a fight was when I went to check out of my hotel room and found out the promoter hadn’t paid for the room as he’d promised and had left town the night before after the fight card.

    Good for Elmer.

Unfortunately Elmer fell short in this bout over then weekend.

    HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) –
Falaniko Vitale celebrated his 38th birthday with a round one TKO win over Elmer Waterhen Saturday night.

Vitale floored Waterhen twice in the round, the second time was with a right upper cut that dropped Waterhen to his knees.

As Waterhen attempted to protect his head by hunching over on the ground, Niko delivered seven unanswered blows to Waterhen’s hands and head before the referee stopped the fight.

“You know, I dropped my opponent beginning of the round and the first few knockdowns, I felt good from there,” said Vitale. “I tried to capitalize and was fortunate to catch him with the upper cut and the win by TKO.”

The win gave Vitale the KOTC Superfight world championship and improved his professional record to 30-10. As for his future, he’s not sure what it holds just yet.

“We’ll see what happens, see what king of the cage has to offer and other organizations got to offer. But right now, I’m the KOTC champ and I’m just going to try and hold this bugger as long as I can.”
