Top MMA News has learned that Kurt Southern (10-3) has agreed to face Roger Huerta (21-7) in the US-based MMA World Series of Fighting promotion.

While there is no current date for the fight, sources indicate it could be held in late August 2012.  The bout is tentatively scheduled to the main event of the card.

MMA World Series of Fighting will hold tournaments in several weight divisions.  Huerta/Southern would be one of the first round matchups in a tournament that could include Brian Cobb, Ronys Torres, and Marcus Aurelio who are also listed as fighting on their first event.

Southern is on a three fight win streak and was recovering from injury in early 2012.  His last win was in the Score Fighting Series against Jorge Britto.

Southern, from Alliance MMA in Saskatoon, will be joined by a teammate in the organization.  Tyson Steele (8-1) is scheduled to join the Welterweight tournament, however it is unknown when he will have his first appearance with the promotion nor whom his opponent will be.  Other Welterweight fighters listed on the organization’s web site include Karo Parisyan, Igor Gracie, and Gregor Gracie.

Steele was supposed to fight Ryan Ford in his last fight but was injured prior to the event and had to pull out of his Aggression fight.  Steele last fought in Evolution Fighting Championship where he defeated Ben Stewart.

This is awesome… I wouldn’t count on those tournaments playing all the way through though! It’s pretty rare that any independent promotions see their tournaments make it all the way to the end.

Huerta should not be fighting for a good amount of time after his last fight that was one of the most brutal knockouts I have ever seen. On top of that he has lost 6 of his last 7 fights. I love good fight cards but seeing him fight so soon literally upsets me. This is the type of stuff that puts a black eye on the sport.

Great opportunity for a couple solid prairie fighters. Huerta should not be fighting for a few months after that soccer kick. He looked dead after that happened, one of the most brutal KO’s I’ve ever seen.

Huerta’s medical condition could be a factor in why official date is not determined

@Graham you really think there holding a whole fight card back for one guy’s medical condition to clear up?

This promotion has some legit guys fighting for it that could be the reason but I would think it’s more along the lines of promtional issues.

@Kyle Stoltz said could be a Factor. which means could be one of potentially several factors affecting an official date. Huerta has the most main stream recognition in this show as well, they may want him for the first show.

This card will not happen. I have heard fighters waiting since the beginning of the year. Heard it was a tourney for a ton of cash and now its not even a tourney.
