Canadian Rumour Mill – June 25

We at Top MMA News and the Gossip Queen would like to pass on our condolences to Roger Hollett and his family on the passing of his father, former multiple time Canadian Middleweight Boxing Champion, Ralph Hollett. Mr. Hollett was one of Canda’s best boxers in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

  • Five Star Fight League will have its debut show in Yellowknife this September 15th, followed by a show in Prince George on October 19th.
    • Look for Adam MacDonald vs Jon Ganshorn to headline the Yellowknife show with Brad Stewart and Duncan Wilson amongst others to appear.
    • October’s event in Prince George will be headlined by Jordan Beecroft vs Joe Riggs.
  •  Tickets for UFC 152, September 22nd, in Toronto will be available through pre-sale on July 21st. The show will be held at the Air Canada Centre and headlined by Rory MacDonald vs BJ Penn.
  • Battlefield Fight League star Marcus “Lelo” Aurelio of Axe Capoeira has signed with Bellator and is set to make his debut at Bellator 73 in August.
  • Whatever happened to Gavin Neil?  Upset Richie Hightower and then nothing.
  • Everyone asks Top MMA News who the biggest promoter from Edmonton is.   The answer just might be Victor Cui.   Who is that, you ask?  Cui is the CEO of Asia’s ONE Fighting Championship.  A graduate of the U of Alberta, Cui has also worked for the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.
  • Bill S-209 which amends Section 83(2) of the Criminal Code to allow MMA was passed by the Senate.  Now it just has to pass through the House of Commons in the fall to become law.
  • Score Fighting Series may move their September Winnipeg event to October 5th. Perez and Doerksen’s names have been throw around.
  • I’m hearing rumours that Aggression FC is looking to expand and hold a show possibly in Winnipeg on August 24th. Similarly to SFS, Eric Perez and Joe Doerksen’s names have been considered for this show.
  • Unified MMA next show after their upcoming July event will be October 5th. Look for Tim “Shady” Smith, Mike Davis,  and Corey Lautischer to appear on the card.

If Aggression does a show in Winnipeg I’ll have to make the trip down and be just a fan for once! haha

  2. James says:

Well if Tim Shady is already planning to be on the October card he must plan on defending his 155 belt or going up to 185, because he aint winning the 170lb against Campbell. Shane will be taking that belt no problem, hate it or not but its true.

  3. TK says:

Agression in Winnipeg would be awesome. One question: who will the promoter be? Is that going to be an Owen, Mirza, or Fader show? I’m not sure of the specifics of the merger, but a 3-way co-promotion would likely result in a great product.
Why couldn’t that be part of the SFS?

Nothing going on in Ontario? What about the SFS? They keep screwing everyone around with dates. These Ontario guys need to fight and the promotions out West won’t fly many fighters out. What a mess Ontario is right now, feel bad for the fighters here who are just told to wait for the SFS.

Re: Gavin Neil. I believe he finished his University degree following his fight with Hightower and probably has enough sense to know that to make a living as a fighter requires constant Grustle, which isn’t for everyone, especially those who may have brighter prospects in other fields of endeavour.

  16. mymmaopinion says:

ONE Fighting Championship has done nothing in terms of grand events to be considered a major promotion. Just because you’re the only one doesn’t make you the best and biggest one, if it did, then it would also be the worst and smallest one as well.

@ DO, thanks for the update!

@ Jamie, Salter just lost over the weekend to Reggie Pena via 2nd round sub, not sure if that entices the AFC brass to book a fight with El Dirte!

  21. MMA Real Updates says:

    Looks like the ECSC has the right to deal with fighters that fight in un sanction fights as follows;

Up to a 1 year banned,

    6 (a) GENERALLY
6.1 No person shall take part in any official capacity, (as a contestant, act as a promoter, matchmaker, manager, trainer, second, attendant, or official involved in the event) at any regulated, sanctioned, professional combative sports event in Edmonton, unless the person holds a valid and subsisting license issued by the ECSC. Any person licensed in Edmonton, who takes part in an unsanctioned or otherwise illegal professional combative sports event, risks having their Edmonton license suspended for up to a calendar year.

  22. Jamie Locke says:

    @Not Leon,

I doubt AFC would be too concerned about the loss. Having their champ come off a loss in another promotion shouldn’t really change who they line up for him, unless of course they concider the guy who just beat him (Pena) to come up and challenge in a rematch for their title. This obviously wouldn’t make much sense as their wouldn’t be much draw power in Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary or Winnipeg for that match-up.

I think El Dirte would beat Salter, probably with the same second round sub victory. Who better to have as a MW champ for a Canadian promotion than the dirty one? Huge draw power in any Canadian city for this match-up and any other match-up with Joe in it.

  24. Joe Doerksen says:

Just wanna make a couple things clear.

Salter and I have the same management. That fight won’t happen.

Bongfeldt and I have trained together in the past, and are looking to do some more in the future. Neither of us feels we want to fight each other at this time. So don’t get excited about that one, either.

My apologies to any fans who were hoping to see one of those fights happen. But trust me, there’s no shortage of exciting matches out there. The sport is producing more quality fighters all the time.

  25. fake phil baroni says:

lol so now people with the same management dont even fight>? or did u guys train together and are best buds also

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 2

  26. Joe Doerksen says:

Nope, never trained with him, although it’s been talked about. My management tries to avoid having people he handles compete against each other. Only time it ever happened for me was in the IFL. Was unavoidable. It was my last fight with them.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 2 Thumb down 6

  27. Don't Call Me Leon says:

No offense El Dirte but if not winning a Canadian Title because of management there’s something wrong there, can understand training partners because that’s up to them. If you’re under the same management and never trained together then give the guy his whopping and take the belt and add it to the accomplishments of your legacy!

    Well-loved! Thumb up 10 Thumb down 1

  28. Ryan W. says:

Yeah, I disagree with TEAMMATES not fighting. Butcan kind of understand it. But not fighting because you have the same management is ridiculous in my opinon. Management just doesn’t want a guy coming off a loss. Protecting your business at the cost of preventing a great fight that makes total sense hurts the fans, the Canadian MMA scene and the mixed martial arts world entirely.

  29. Robin Black says:

There’s hundreds of guys Joe can fight. And after all those great entertaining fights Joe has had, and all his contributions, I say Joe fight who you want when you want and don’t fight who you don’t whenever you don’t want.

If Joe says he prefers to fight one of the 6000 plus middleweights that don’t have the same management as him instead of this one guy then I say party on Joe.

  32. Jamie Locke says:

I’m with not Leon on this. I completely understand team mates not fighting, as they train, game plan and likely hang out all the time and don’t want to ruin that. But just having the same management really shouldn’t matter to the fighters, only to the management. I get why it won’t happen, it’s just too bad.

I think it should matter to the fighter. If I have a manager willing to put me against another one of his own guys, I have to wonder who’s best interests is he looking out for… mine or my opponent?

Not really asking anyone what they think I should do. Just explaining why the fight won’t happen. You can debate further if you like, but my decision has already been made.

I plan to fight another few years, then get a real job. Not tryuing to win titles, just wanna have some fun. Watch me if it pleases you, ignore me if it doesn’t.
