Canadian Rumour Mill – June 18

What does Chuck Liddell now that he is retired? Party with the Stanley Cup!

  • Main event of Hard Knocks 25 was scratched due to Roy Bradshaw fighting the week before in an unsanctioned MMA event.  The Bully’s Fight Night champion fought at an Absolute Fight Factory event in Flathead Valley Fairgrounds in Kalispell, Montana. Montana does have a commission, the Montana Board of Atheltics.
  • Well it looks like Denis Kang managed to right the ship and get back on the winning track KOing Hae Suk Son in the 1st round at Road FC 8
  • So despite earlier reports that the UFC would not return to Vancouver for a few years, it sounds like they may return earlier now that a provincial commission has been formed. Last week, UFC officials were in Vancouver talking to the Rogers Arena as well as city and provincial officials.
  • Hague vs Hackert II is back on MFC 34!  Sounds like the Black Prince of MMA got involved when his great Heavyweight rematch was in trouble.
  • Hearing that the UFC has booked Rexall Place for October 26, 2013.  Does not mean that they will follow through with a show, but it’s nice to know they are thinking about Edmonton and working around hockey schedules well in advance!
  • So now Big Nog is out of UFC 149 as well, the UFC might as well change the name of the show from UFC 149 to UFC “Strikeforce”. This show is basically a Strikeforce level card now with all the upper tier names being dropped from the event.
  • Congrats to Sandy Bowman for his induction into the Wood Buffalo Hall of Fame, he’ll join former 1st overall pick and long time Ottawa Senator Chris Phillips in the Hall.
  • Don’t expect a Sarnia show in September with the UFC in Toronto the week before.  In fact, fewer and fewer promoters are willing to lose money due to prohibitive commission costs.
  • Ryan Ford, Will Romero, Chuck O’Neil, Stephen Simms, and Kajan Johnson are the most recent additions to Mitch Mayberger’s stable of fighters. His list of fighters already included UFC studs John Makdessi, Ivan Menjivar, Yves Jabouin, Chris Carioso, and Joey Gambino. When you add other clients like Alex Garcia, Mike Ricci, Tom Murphy, and Chad Laprise to the list, you have to agree that Fight House Management has been built into one of Canada’s biggest MMA agencies!

  1. Donald Duck says:

Don’t quote me on this but I think the logic behind 90 day suspensions was to make sure new blood work would have a higher chance of showing anything if the fighter was exposed at an illegal event and a 90 day suspension also is a normal sit down and rest period for concussions. The logic was probably that since there was no impartial third party validation for what happened at the event then the commissions would error on the side of caution.

I’m not a doctor so perhaps 80 is sufficient (would love to hear an argument either for or against this) but I don’t know. What I do know is that in today’s day and age you can have guys fighting every month so if you took three paycheques from a fighter perhaps he or she would think more carefully before taking an unsanctioned fight.

When you say one thing and do another you don’t really help the sport grow. People need to remember that while the sport is huge and global we’re still in the leather helmet era. There needs to be more attention to detail where these things are concerned.

    Well-loved! Thumb up 6 Thumb down 0
