Alessio Meets Roller at UFC 148
John Alessio’s return to the UFC Octagon didn’t go his way taking a hard fought decision loss to Mark Bocek at UFC 145. Taking the fight on short notice and his gritty performance seemed to please the powers that be as Alessio will make a quick turn around and tangle with fellow UFC Lightweight Shane Roller at UFC 148 July 7 in Las Vegas.
Alessio, the first Canadian to challenge for a UFC title, recently dropped to Lightweight and gathered up a 3 fight win streak going into his fight with Bocek. Once a perennial top 10 Canadian Welterweight has now become a solid top 10 national Lightweight. “The Natural” has not had an easy road in any of his UFC appearances, debuting at UFC 26 where he challenged Pat Miletich for the UFC Welterweight title. He then returned at UFC 60 where he dropped a unanimous decision to Diego Sanchez many fans felt he won. Lastly he lost another unanimous decision to Thiago Alves at UFC: The Final Chapter October 10, 2006. At a new weight and with consistent top training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Alessio will attempt to make this run in the big show stick.
Roller once a highly touted prospect from Team Takedown who went 6-2 in the WEC has had a rough go at making the transition to the UFC’s Lightweight division. Roller debut in the UFC at UFC Live 3 earning a big KO win over Thiago Tavares since then he has dropped 3 straight to Melvin Guillard, TJ Grant and most recently Michael Johnson. This will be a very important fight for Roller as a loss would easily see him cut from the UFC’s roster.
UFC 148: Silva vs Sonnen 2 goes down July 7 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Other notable match ups on the card include Forest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz 2 and Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le, check your local listing for PPV availability.
