King Of The Cage: Unified – Recap


King of the Cage and Unified MMA collaborated for the first time last night in Grande Prairie, Alberta last night in front of a crowd of more than 1000 fans at the Crystal Centre. Hometown fighters went 4-1 on the evening and all 7 fights ended in either a knockout or submission.

Professional Fights:

Travis Briere vs. Brad Cardinal
The two feel each other out as the bout starts out slow before Cardinal lands a solid chopping leg kick. Briere looks for a takedown but can’t complete it and ties up Cardinal against the cage. Briere pulls him off the cage and secures the double leg, landing in full guard where he lands a pair of shots. Cardinal latches onto an arm begins working for the armbar. Briere defends but Cardinal is able to straighten the arm out and elicit the quick tap.

Josh Machan vs. Behrang Yousefi
Yousefi lands a right and Machan responds with one of his own. Yousefi lands a kick to the body but Machan takes the opportunity to secure the takedown. They scramble on the ground trying to obtain a superior position and Machan finally ends up taking the back. Machan works for the rear naked choke on a bloodied Yousefi. Yousefi fights the hands and defends the choke before scrambling away while looking for a kimura. Yousefi can’t crank the arm but ends up in the guard of Machan where he lands a pair of solid shots. Machan begins to look for an armbar but Yousefi defends but Machan keeps working and locks it in deeper. Yousefi is in trouble but keeps defending and rolls away but Machan stays on him, pops his hips and hyper-extends the arm which prompts referee Andy Social to step in and stop the bout. Post fight, Machan calls out Travis Briere on behalf of his team mates Advin Omic and Ryan Machan whom he says Briere has refused to fight.

Tim Hague vs. Craig Hudson
Hague lands a solid leg kick and Hudson responds with three thunderous leg kicks of his own. Hague locks up and lands a nice trip takedown against the cage. Hudson is able to use the cage to stand back up and lands a pair of shots on the way up. Hague looks to take the fight back to the ground but Hudson is able to defend the takedown and lands a few elbows. They break off the cage and Hudson lands a hard jab, uppercut combo followed by a huge knee that appear to rock Hague. Hudson closes the distance and looks to score the upset finish but Hague recover and lands a crushing overhand right square on the nose of Hudson sending him crashing to the ground. Hague looks to follow-up with some ground and pound but referee Tom Collins steps in to prevent any unnecessary damage.

Spencer Jebb vs. Simon Shirt
Jebb opens with a trio of body kicks although none land with much power. Shirt lands a right and Jebb responds with a left hook and a head kick that just falls short. Jebb throws a combo against the cage and they tie up. Jebb gets double underhooks and looks to use it to take Shirt to the ground. Shirt is able to stay on his feet and escapes. Shirt lands a knee and secures a guillotine, dropping to the ground. The choke looks deep and Jebb unsuccessfully tries to pull his head out. Jebb finally begins to hammer the body and Shirt winces and can’t keep his grip and Jebb pulls his head free. Jebb moves to half guard and begins to land huge shots. Shirt turtles and Jebb continues raining down heavy leather until referee Len Koivisto steps in and rescues Shirt from any further punishment.

Amateur Fights:

Kyle Francotti vs. Matthew Swimmer
Swimmer lands a shot immediately and Francotti gets the takedown and takes the back. Francotti works for a rear naked choke but Swimmer spins out only to be mounted. Francotti lands several shots and Swimmer again gives up his back before getting his half guard. Swimmer can do nothing but hold on and referee Andy Social stands them up. Both men swing wildly with neither connecting with anything significant. Francotti again jumps on the back but releases and secures the standing guillotine choke against the cage. Francotti pulls hard and Swimmer drops his mouth guard and taps out.

Colton Welsh vs. Ken Elter
Welsh lands a few shots followed by some leg kicks to open the round. Elter looks for a guillotine but Welsh survives and tags him with a pair of hard rights before they lock up against the cage. Welsh lands a knee up the middle and looks for the takedown but Welsh loses his balance and Elter ends up in his guard. Welsh fights the hands and Elter is unable to mount an offense. Welsh throws up a triangle and rolls to a top mount triangle. Elter survives briefly but is ultimately forced to tap out.

Jerry Grievson vs. Brad Laboucan
Laboucan lands a weak shot and Grievson secures a body lock and uses it to muscle him to the ground, landing in half guard. Grievson works the body before posturing up and connecting with some solid shots. Grievson passes to side control and drives a knee to the body. Grievson uses knee on belly and passes to full mount where he drops heavy leather until referee Len Koivisto has no choice but to halt the contest.

    Why would Briere be stripped of his 170 belt for not meeting a 155 lbs fight?? I agree he made a BIG whoopsie but that seems a little extreme…Duggan missed his last Unified fight by close to 10 lbs and he only had to give up 20% of his purse…Perhaps Unified has their faves…

    Actually I was told Cardinal requested the extra 20% to accept the fight and the commission granted it… fair request I’d say, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other factors leading to Briere being stripped and released, but that’s just speculation on my part!
